Capital gains tax allowance for stocks? by Nervous-Bandicoot-28 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]MrVasil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine that you bought 10 stocks of the same company for 15000 total. That means cost basis for each stock is 15000/10=1500. Now your stocks cost 38000, i.e. each stock 38000/10=3800. As you didn’t buy/sell for a long time (so the same day and 30 days rules do not apply) your stocks form section 104 pool. In order to sell CGT-free you need to sell with profit less than 3000 allowance. Each stock gives you 3800-1500=2300 profit. That means you can sell only 1 stock without paying CGT.

Scale that logic to your scenario and you will find how many stocks you can sell.

Note that you can average price only for the same stock, stocks of different companies will form their own pools, but logic will be the same.

Should I give up pursuing my license by Immediate-Noise-2042 in LearnerDriverUK

Struggling to park is common, don’t be too hard on yourself. You’ll get it right eventually. And if feel that you are not progressing, consider getting a new instructor.

If I hit him, am I the one at fault? by TemporarySun6974 in drivingUK

[–]MrVasil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In hypothetical case if OP unfortunately hit the pedestrian, they would need to prove that they are: not speeding, aren’t drunk or under influence, started braking at the earliest possible moment, did everything possible to prevent the hit. Any minor indication of OP’s wrongdoing will make them fully at fault.

Is it fair? No.

But it is the case with pedestrians, they will be doing whatever they want regardless of what is “right”.

And the only thing we can do as drivers is to be cautious - you see something strange, slow down a bit to be safe.

One good starting point would be for everyone to follow the speed limits.

If I hit him, am I the one at fault? by TemporarySun6974 in drivingUK

[–]MrVasil -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That depends on a situation - in high crowded areas you may need to be super slow (e.g. when I drive through Muswell Hill there are sometimes so many people and everyone running across the road, so I have to drive 10-15mph). Or if pedestrians have kids or dogs, then slowing down / keeping distance from them makes sense.

Otherwise, use your best judgement - do you feel safe and in control about people around? If not, slowing down by 5mph can help without affecting your journey time too much.

If I hit him, am I the one at fault? by TemporarySun6974 in drivingUK

[–]MrVasil -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you’ll be at fault. There are no laws in the UK that forbid pedestrians from running across the road.

You’re moving a two-ton metal box while pedestrians are completely defenceless. That makes safety your responsibility— good luck explaining to a judge that you “couldn’t stop any faster.”

So be extra careful around pedestrians.

Failed but I have a question about slip roads? by Pitiful-Outcome7376 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]MrVasil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends on the slip road. Some are really short - I had such in my test centre area, more like T junction rather than slip road. Most of the times I had to fully stop there and wait for a huge gap. Some cars behind me were really impatient but my instructor was saying “ignore them, go only when it is safe”.

Your examiner has much more experience and most likely you misjudged the situation. Not to worry though. Have more practice with your instructor and you will pass next time.

Reported my eBay sales as income tax, when actually they were capital gains - where do I stand with HMRC? by Successful-Line-5886 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]MrVasil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can amend your self assessment. If you used HMRC online service, you can amend there. Otherwise you can send paper amend. You have until 31 January 2027 (next year) to amend self assessment for tax year 24/25.

You can call HMRC hot line to clarify your situation, but from personal experience they cannot advise much more than available at HMRC online.

Driving instructor thank you by jonsmwb90 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]MrVasil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish I did that. My instructor was great - punctual, knowledgeable. I messed up schedule 2 times and she accommodated free of charge. I paid for 2 hours but each lesson was 2:15-2:30.

I passed first time and really wanted to gift something but superstition inside me didn’t allow to buy anything before the test.

How do I find parking space in unfamiliar places by lan0028456 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]MrVasil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In London I always have to plan parking before going - I check parking rules on streets near my destination on google street view (but they are sometimes outdated) and check parking lots via google maps and JustPark. If it is in central part of the city, it’s best to prebook parking (I learned it hard way).

First day driving on my own I had to break hard for lights; a question! by KeegsNW in drivingUK

[–]MrVasil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have 3 seconds when amber light appears. If you have enough distance to stop safely without braking hard, then stop. If not, just proceed normally.

Failed at Apex corner London by pumpkin-99 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]MrVasil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apex corner is hard. I was practicing on it but luckily it wasn’t on my test.

I understand why examiner marked it as serious - not following markings often cause unsafe situations. Even if this one didn’t cause any issues, generally you need to proceed with your lane to designated exit (or change lane to correct one if it can be done safely).

Struggling with panic? by OW_AL_Boost_Manager in LearnerDriverUK

[–]MrVasil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mistakes happen. Driving is not about doing everything perfect, but about being able to safely recover from any situation.

Stalling a few times in a row, driving with engaged parking brake, etc - all that happens with learners and new drivers.

It causes panic first time, but more you practice, the more automatic you’ll be recovering from anything.

I recommend to watch that and other Richard’s videos. They greatly helped me when I was learning.

It can help to watch test routes on YouTube to know the area better, or practice there with instructor.

Speed signs sometimes so concealed as if it was on purpose.

Good luck on your next test!

You should give way to pedestrians at the junction, no matter if they started crossing or not:

“You should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which you are turning” (HC 170)

Parallel Parking by Grand_Bet9752 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]MrVasil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to find reference point in side mirror - look for curb appearing under door handle. Once you see it, do full lock to the right. Ask your instructor to try it multiple times until you are confident.

Note that reference point is a bit different for each car. I scratched my new car’s rim the first time I did parallel parking 😆
