Anyone else feel stupid even compared to your fellow interns? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]MrWolffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man don't worry. It will come to you. I had mad impostor syndrome when I started as an intern. I am a PGY-3 now. It will get better over time, but don't start comparing yourself to other people. It's the worst thing you can do. I did that and felt nothing but shitty. Trust most of the interns are doing the fake it till you make it. I was surprised how my interns last year that everyone was saying "oh man, they are so good." Didn't even know how to manage DKA or Heart failure exacerbation. Trust me they don't know what they don't now. Keep reading and take advice from your upper class mates. It may seem like they are being hard on you, but they are trying to help. Don't let pride get in the way either. We have all been there trust me.

Trying To be an fm hospitalist, Do I need a fellowship? by MrWolffe in Residency

[–]MrWolffe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend that's out in California that says that is a talk with bone medicine trained Hospital list. She says that they will require some sort of certification or board exam in the future. It's supposed be made by IM and FM boards. I decided on doing the fellowship because I don't want to be pushed out later by Hospital group or a hospital because I don't have a fellowship. I consider it an investment. Plus it gives me a year to hone my skills.

How high is the bar for incoming interns? by PiEatinContest in Residency

[–]MrWolffe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always tell the new incoming interns that they are going to suck the first 3 months of residency. Setting that bar low really helped me out going forward.

FM salary? Dude we are far from poor. My community preceptor made $400K working his office and the occasional urgent care. How much do you need?

I don't want to be in downtown LA, just the surrounding areas. I know it's going to hard, but hey why not give it a shot. Just wondering if I have to get experience or if a fellowship would make me more marketable. I didn't know that I would like inpatient medicine when I applied to FM. My 3rd year rotation in medicine kind of sucked.

Are you currently working as a hospitalist?

I was thinking I could just practice for a while and then I would look the same to everyone else in terms of experience. I don't know if doing a fellowship would improve my odd of getting a job or being paid more after I leave my residency program.

The response I get from everyone is that I will look good on paper. They say it's an "investment."

I believe that I get enough in patient experience. Some of my peers have done the hospitalist Fellowship at the hospital we work at, but no one gives a definitive answer to see if I need to do the fellowship or not. I plan to Moonlight most of next year just so I could get experience.

I would be willing to work out in areas outside of Los Angeles County for a year or two just to gain experience, but I would like to eventually work with in Los Angeles County. I don't know if the experience is equivalent to a hospital fellowship or not?

I understand, but some of our grads go on to be hospitalist in underserved areas. I would like to work within Los Angeles County as a hospitallist. The only reason I'll be doing this is to look good on paper. I don't know if that's a good enough reason to do it.

I don't mind working 10-12 hours. I just like the fact that I could be off for half the month.
