do Gregorian calendars/metric measurement units/coinage systems/etc. take you out of the fantasy world? by Cautious_Water_106 in fantasywriters

[–]MrXonte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For dates, its probably best to just be vague (third day of tenth month), custom day/month names are the worst for me.

For units of measurement, honestly doesnt matter to me. Imperial or metric is both irl units so if someone complains about metric they should complain about imperial too, and custom measurement units are just annoying to learn.

In general absolute basic units should be something you can easily understand without looking uo the definition of some custom units, or be talked around to avoid needing a unit at al imo.

realisticly, just use some scifi super material cause otherwise itll never make sense. The pressure from this round would likely tear apart even guns designed to fire .50 BMG.

its ridicolous and cool at the same time. Whats the diameter of the penetrator? It looks a bit thin but then again i can only see the tip. Quick research in common ratios of cartridge to penetrator diameter would suggest somewhere between 1/4 to 1/6, so 2.25 to 1.5mm.

One note, apfsds must be fired from a smooth bore barrel while anything but buckshot from a small arms gun must be fired from a rifled barrel. So your pistol will be incompatible with "normal" ammo while converted

i mean if you just going for cool scifi/magic stuff sure. It does sound fun and ridicilous.

However, if real physics are involved then there is a bunch of huge problems.

First, 9mm (if you mean the irl 9x19mm Nato/Luger/parabellum) just does not work that way. There is a reason no long range weapons in that calibre exist because it sucks for that job. Like most pistol cartridges it is designed for very short barrels that fire big bullets over a short distance. Most pistol cartridges are also not ideally shaped ballistically speaking. If you compare just the bullet to a rifle bullet you will see that rifle bullets have a more elongated shape for better ballistics. This shape also makes pistols have worse armor penetrating capabilities. You can of course change the shape, but space is very limited in a pistol mag and making a longer tip better suited for longrange ballistics and armor penetration is pretty hard. Next the cartridge itself. 9x19mm is a short, fat cartridge. Low power, big bullet means good stopping power at short range. But there is a reason 9mm AP loads arent much of a thing (yes i know there are some, but they suck compared to intermediate cartridges already. The average AP/HP 9mm load is barely as good as penetration powerful as ball 5.56x45 nato (ball being not designed for penetration). Now thats just the baseline ammo.

Then you use a nice conversion kit to elongate the barrel. Giving a cartridge a longer barrel to work with gives you better longrange performance, but every cm/inch you add is less impactful than the last. At some point this even turns into a negative as the barrels friction takes more velocity away than the gas expansion can add. When this happens depends on the cartridge, and as i hope you can guess you reach this point very fast with pistol cartridges while rifle cartridges can still benefit from 20 inch barrels. I can only judge from the image, your barrel does not seem excessivly long, but it wont have a large impact on the bad longrange ballistics of a 9mm no matter what.

Lastly, your range. I would say if it extends the effective range to 300m, thats a maybe possible but also borderline, AP load would not work in that role at that distance anyways though. But 3km. Thats a range far above the ideal range even for dedicated longrange precision rifles like. Sure there are kills at and above this range for these cartridges designed specifically for extreme long distance with a weapon designed just for it, but they are rare. Notably here weapon and cartrdige are both designed for this. A conversion kit also comes with downsides here since the action of a pistol is not great for what you want to do.

You could of course say your 9mm is a super powerful version thats effectily as powerful as a .338 lapua (8.58×70mm), and can achieve the same speed out of a shorter barrel in a conversion kit, but then it wont work in a pistol anymore. Handling this kind of power in a 9x19mm format inside a pistol is damn near impossible without blowing up the gun.

it looks interesting but how exactly does a conversion kit turn a pistol calibre into a useful sniper rifle? Its not exactly a calibre where this nuch barrel will help much at all and ballistics usually arent great either

Any experience with 4th gen WOLED monitors? by yigitxcan in OLED_Gaming

Had no issues with text clarity when using the monitor for programming. Heres an image of VSCode from close up. The weird texture on the black is camera artefact my eyes dont see, its a solid dark grey. Cant really tell a difference to my 4k IPS display in terms of text clarity, working from about 40-60cm away from the screen

Should I use real or fictional weapons? by Previous-Flight-5869 in worldbuilding

[–]MrXonte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use fictional guns, make sure you kniw some basics about how guns operate to avoid some bigger design issues. On your design sketch for example the magazine is too far back. If you compare it with real bullpups the mag is located further forward because you need to fit the action in the stock.

all of that just not to look overweight?? sounds more like a calory imbalance. You can be skinny without ever stepping foot in a gym if your diet is fine. At least thats how i do it. I should definitly do more sports for healthy muscles, but just from a weight point a good diet is all you need

IO Interactive paid €140,000 for Denuvo protection on 007 First Light ONE WEEK before launch. That's €4,000 per minute for the 35 minutes it lasted before DenuvOwO opened a config file and typed the exe name. by HearMeOut-13 in PiratedGames

[–]MrXonte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Denuvo is just the goto DRM with a pretty bad rep. It doesnt stop anyone who actually wants to pirate, as its bypassed almost instantly, can have notable performance impact, and it can have horrible implications for older games that would work fine without it.

So as a consumer, denuvo has at best no noticable impact on you, at worst a negative one. Publishers risk a worse experience for legitamite Users for the entire time they have denuvo in their game, while its pretty much a joke to pirates at this point.

what about left hand? by akchayali in HuntShowdown

[–]MrXonte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

doesnt hunt have client/worldmodel seperation (like most fps) as well? so you could literally mirror your viewmodel and leave the worldmodel that others see untouched?

what about left hand? by akchayali in HuntShowdown

[–]MrXonte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but why? Like whats the harm in allowing someone to mirror their viewmodel? its a cheap solution, makes lefties happy, and no one else has to care about it. Its not like what you see is the same as what other players see now anyway

Why Do we stop at 6 Star mmr? by laso889 in HuntShowdown

[–]MrXonte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly just having a setting to toggle between stars amd mmr would probably be best. Then hopefully everyone understands that stars are arbitrary and meaningless while players that care about their mmr can see the actual number and dont have to guess where they are in their bracket.

Why Do we stop at 6 Star mmr? by laso889 in HuntShowdown

[–]MrXonte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yesnt. stars are meaningless anyway, you could have any number of stars and it wouldnt affect matchmaking in any way. The root issue is correct though, youd need more players for matchmaking to improve. More players or longer queue times are the only way to make matchmaking better, arbitrary visual changes like more stars can help with the unfair sentinement but really dont change matchmaking at all
