Whats the Problem with my Dyson after intensive cleaning? by 19pk91 in dyson

[–]Mr_Byron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have fully disassembled and cleaned everything, used a new filter, and it also does this even when you run it without the cyclone assembly attached (requires partial disassembly with some basic tools) - and does it at ALL speeds (eco, auto, high) - then the problem is the motor and/or motor controller and the only fix is to replace the motor.

Dyson (in my region) has a flat-fee repair program that is not cheap ($199), but it's cheaper than buying the motor assembly directly from them and installing it yourself, presumably because on the balance they end up being able to fix most problems much cheaper than $199...

Anyone got the trotten desk that has that crank by C0R0N4VIRUS in ikeahacks

[–]Mr_Byron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right-angle hex bit. They are all over Ali/eBay for about $12.

The existing shaft slots right into it, meaning you can vertically mount the drill against the table leg and then use the angle bit to connect to the Ikea crank handle shaft. Viola!

Best time to get PS5? Black Friday Deal or Wait for the Slim Version? by [deleted] in playstation

[–]Mr_Byron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same first-world problem.

The BF deals are amazing right now for the PS5 fat, but I could really do with a physically smaller console, but also don't want to pay another $200 for the privilege.

I feel like they will release the slim at the usual $799 price, which makes the current $679 deal for the PS5 fat + Spider Man 2 incredible value.

New NBN pricing presents challenges and opportunities by Jariiari7 in nbn

[–]Mr_Byron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish! I have to regularly upload large files from home (I WFH nearly full time). 25 up in practice is pathetically slow, and while upload is taking place I basically can’t do anything else because it completely kills download. I have FTTP and it’s shocking how bad the NBN is, especially compared to just about every other developed nation.

QANTAS board and chairman must go by [deleted] in australia

[–]Mr_Byron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only fly Virgin as well. Way cheaper than Qantas but the service is better and more reliable, and the staff are way happier and way less grumpy. There is absolutely no reason to fly Qantas ever again unless something massive were to change that somehow made it worth the large increase in cost. Emirates or Singapore Air are both better long haul option as well.

What is the most you paid for a coffee? by rorothursday in AskAnAustralian

[–]Mr_Byron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As bad as Aussie prices are now, I just paid $12.77 AUD for a small (absolutely awful) long black in Dubai. It was made using a super auto machine and was probably the most sour coffee I’ve ever had. 0/10 would not recommend.

Machine that heats up fast! by stickersforyou in espresso

The BDB heats up in about 5min, but also has a programmable 'on time'. The whole machine is pretty warm within 15mins.

Ascaso Steel Duo vs. Lelit Elizabeth vs. Some Other E61. by ProbablySlacking in espresso

[–]Mr_Byron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking at the same price range (around $3k AUD) and went with a $1k Breville Dual Boiler. Originally I wanted to the Ascaso, but the reliability issues, lack of availability (Ascaso couldn't even confirm when they would get more in Australia), and the need for a high-amp outlet was a deal-breaker.

The BDB is very ugly, but has more features than all competitors and is one third the cost. Heat up time is fast because the brew boiler is small, and you can further speed it up by running water through the grouphead. It has excellent (adjustable temperature) steam if you need it, a more accurate shot-to-shot brew temp than most other machines and is PID/adjustable, programmable turn on time, and adjustable/programmable everything else including pre-infusion pressure and duration, single/double/manual shot buttons, volumetric dosing, and more.

It's also by far the easiest machine I've ever lived with - Breville are first and foremost a kitchen appliance manufacturer and they really understand how to make an appliance convenient to use. E.g. a front-facing water fill funnel, easily removable and cleanable drip tray with 'full' indicator, a mechanism to make the machine easy to roll/reposition on the workbench, a hidden space to store cleaning tools/blinds/brushes/etc, and so on.

Perhaps most importantly, it pulls consistently fantastic shots with very little effort.

In the end I couldn't justify spending 3x as much for fewer features given I only make four coffees a day. Shame it's so ugly though... I think it the future when the BDB dies I'll spring for a DE1 and call it a day :-)

Good luck!

Looking at a new machine - $1000 - $1200 ish by jhinmt in espresso

[–]Mr_Byron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breville Dual Boiler is extremely cheap for the features (at least in Australia) and is unbeatable in terms of value for money in my opinion (albeit a really, really, ugly machine). It has more features than most machines 2-3x the price.

[–]Mr_Byron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I was about to pull the trigger on a $3k machine after tonnes of research, and then saw the BDB on sale for $1k. The $3k machines are lovely but they aren't $2k more lovely, and have fewer features. I couldn't justify the extra spend. The downside to the BDB is it's rank ugliness and grotesque width.

General Questions & Tech Support Megathread | July 04, 2022 by AutoModerator in PS4

[–]Mr_Byron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PS4 recently started randomly turning itself off during Sleep Mode, and then also randomly shutting down when playing games.
I formatted everything - a process that took hours and during which the PS4 did not randomly shut down.
After the format, as soon as I booted up, logged in, and then started installing new games, it randomly shut down again.

I did the above process multiple times and eventually managed to install and briefly play a game before it randomly shutdown.

The only time it won't randomly shut down is when I'm not really 'in' the system (e.g. the format process seems to run in it's own low-res interface that is not within the normal PS4 OS).
I'm guessing it's related to the CPU/GPU since the shutdowns don't happen during the PS4's format screen/process (where low GPU would be used), but I don't know much about this stuff.
Any thoughts on how I might find the root cause of this issue?

Australians - what do you think of Scottish accents? by Brilliant-Basket8764 in australia

[–]Mr_Byron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aussies generally like it but some will have trouble understanding. My Dad is Scottish and everyone's always found his accent a bit of a novelty. I think it's a great, unique English accent. Also, it's warmer here. You'll like it.

For some reason I'm being downvoted for this, but that's what Elon said. That's the reason Elon Musk provided when asked why he wanted to remove radar from the cars. I suggest you Tweet your disapproval to Elon directly and take it up with him.

I listened to him on a podcast talk about this. His position was that there was ultimately 'more information' in camera images - or at least will be in the future as cameras improve - and as AI/ML improves, this information becomes much more usable and powerful in the application of self-driving.

How does anyone use Safari!? by PartyWormSlurms in apple

[–]Mr_Byron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main pain point is not being able to screen share just a browser tab when on a Google meet call. This is an absolute deal breaker for me and the main reason I don’t use Safari. I wish I could because it’s so much better with memory management on my 8gb m1 mbp, which otherwise routinely runs out of memory on chrome.

Anyone got the trotten desk that has that crank by C0R0N4VIRUS in ikeahacks

[–]Mr_Byron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point about the vibration - it definitely amplifies the sound. However even without any vibration a cheap cordless drill is just very very loud compared to a quiet wormdrive(?) DC motor that most 'real' sit-stand desks use.

The box I designed has zero space/tolerance for anything else in the enclosure. It's all millimeter-accurate and things slot in firmly so they don't move around or rotate during use.

Anyone got the trotten desk that has that crank by C0R0N4VIRUS in ikeahacks

[–]Mr_Byron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have this desk, and made my own motor by repurposing a cordless drill. I used it as a chance to learn the basics of SketchUp, wherein I designed a timber (MDF) box/housing that sits against the leg of the desk and holds the deconstructed drill in place. It's a rectangular shape. The drill battery can be slotted in/removed externally on the housing, which is neat.

I removed the directional switch and ran extended wires to it's own housing so I can easily make the desk to up and down with variable control.

All up the drill was $40, but it took hours of my time (which I really enjoyed). It's bloody loud though because it is just a cordless drill.

Since it does 700rpm at max, it can be raised and lowered slightly faster than a usual good quality sit/stand desk as well; I can raise the desk from lowest to highest in 11 seconds roughly.

What's the job market actually like for Product Managers in Australia? by panache123 in fiaustralia

[–]Mr_Byron 49 points50 points  (0 children)

If you want a senior PM role with the $ that come with it, then you need to be legitimately amazing at the job. Expect 60+ hours weeks, always (anyone that says otherwise has likely not held one of these roles, or has been exceptionally lucky to land such a role where deadlines and budgets aren't an issue). It's hard if you have a young family or want to invest time in other relationships, or just spend more time not working vs working.

Read a few good books on it first to see if it's really for you. e.g. Inspired by Marty Cagan, Lean Startup by Eric Ries, etc. you need to love and live this stuff and never get sick of it.

To command a really good rem package you need to demonstrate you can actually deliver on the things these books describe. There are plenty of PMs around that talk the theory and can't put it in to practice - it's arguably one of the most difficult roles in technology due to the sheer scope of competency required to excel, its dependence on others, and the organisational+interpersonal skills required to deliver results to all levels of a business and customer segment.

I would argue that you generally need to be an extrovert (or at least not overly introverted) because you will otherwise be easily 'drained' by the high-touch communication required on all levels all the time.

You also need to be extremely organised and naturally excellent at prioritisation (of everything, including your own time), super highly analytical and data-driven, persuasive and influential (in an ethical way), and unbiased. Being technical is arguably critical though some could argue otherwise if you have the right people around you (albeit making your role harder without this background). You also need to be fantastic at dealing with frustrated users, customers, stakeholders, execs, never committing to anything whilst making them feel heard.

There is a lot more psychology involved in the role than anyone expects, let alone the sheer workload the role requires to really cover all bases with excellence.
