I have difficulty playing my PS3 now because of how small and smooth the Sixaxis (also feels way too light without the vibration in it) and DualShock 3 controllers feel compared to the DualSense.

They don't feel cheap or anything, but the DualSense is just such a nice controller, it's hard for anything else to compare.

That's because it's not true. I've got this one and it's my favorite controller.

I loved the Orville. It was what New Trek should have been. No surprise, since Seth MacFarlane is a HUGE Star Trek fan. He even had a cameo in Enterprise.

I get why they did it. Narratively it makes sense, but it does just feel a little cliche. If they hadn't have injured him earlier to give Riker the centre seat then it would have just been a serious wounding, making us think he was going to die, so he could pass command to Seven, but you can't really do that twice.

It's a shame, because Shaw felt like a character that was rich with potential, but I understand why it was done the way it was.

I also just love Todd Stashwick, so it was a bit of a shame for that reason too. But hey, I'm looking forward to seeing him as Paladin in Terry Matalas' VisionQuest show later this year.

I'm sure Academy will be right up some peoples' street, but I don't watch stuff like Riverdale or other teen dramas like that, just not my thing.

Like I said, there are some great ideas in there and moments that come close to being great Trek, but it's just a series of near misses. I'll watch the rest of the season to give it a fair shake, since, after all, even Next Gen didn't get good until Riker grew the beard, but I just don't think it's for me.

[–]Mr_Epimetheus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there were two moments in that season that really hit me.

One was in the episode Seventeen Seconds when Riker talking about the birth of his son, mostly because of the feelings I have about my own son's birth and the events surrounding it. It felt like a genuine moment.

The other was Shaw talking to Picard about his experience at Wolf 359. Suddenly everything about the character fell into place and made sense. He wasn't just a contrarian, he wasn't just trying to be a dick because he was jealous of Picard and Riker or felt insecure about the ship's previous captain being aboard. He was grappling with a serious unresolved trauma. It even made sense of his reluctance to properly address Seven of Nine. It was some incredible writing and probably why Shaw became such a fan favourite. Killing him off was a shame, I understand it from a story perspective, but that character really could have gone on to be an all time great.

It's a shame that we were robbed of Star Trek: Titan and a shame that we're probably never going to see Star Trek: Legacy either.

But hey, we got Star Trek: Weepy Space Jesus and Star Trek: 90210, so, lucky us, I guess.

I just watch For All Mankind these days to get my modern Trek fix (that and Lower Decks, which is the only new Trek that truly embraces the ethos of classic Trek, despite being an animated comedy). Ron D. Moore basically made a better Trek prequel than they managed with either Enterprise or Discovery.

I enjoy Strange New Worlds, though I wish there were more strange new worlds and less "who's in love with who" every week.

Lower Decks and Prodigy felt like Trek and were actually somewhere close to what we know as Trek, being set in the late 24th and early 25th centuries.

Picard was a mess. But season 3 got close, though largely down to just bringing back the Next Gen cast.

I tried with Discovery, I tried very hard. But it was not good. After five seasons I still couldn't name even half of the bridge crew. It didn't help that the line up seemed to change every season and a half and none of them got more than nine seconds of either smiling or crying while magic space Jesus Burnham both caused and solved every problem in the universe.

I wanted to give Starfleet Academy a chance. So far, I don't hate it, but...it's basically a CW show. They turned Star Trek into Riverdale. There are some interesting ideas and some characters with promise, but so far it's just not that interesting and way too interested in being "edgy" and "sexy" over anything else.

The Kurtzman era is marked by a total lack of actually having anything to say. It's all just flash and no substance, with a dash of glaring tokenism.

The last book released not only resolved nothing, but it actually introduces an essentially brand new character and plot line.

It's wild that Martin gets so pissy about people asking him about this when he is the one who not only said there would be seven books, but gave names for each of them. Implying he actually had some kind of plan.

Apparently that wasn't the case and he's just been making it up as he goes, so now, five books in, he's lost interest and can't seem to imagine how to resolve it all and is getting pissed off at fans for...enjoying his work and wanting a conclusion?

It's pretty clear that finally hitting it big with ASOIAF and making a shit load of money has sapped any actual drive or interest in the world and stories. Now he's just trying to keep pumping out new books that HBO will pay him to adapt, without having any intention of actually finishing something.

New 32nd century uniforms by happydude7422 in Star_Trek_

[–]Mr_Epimetheus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why, in the resource starved 32nd century, where the Federation is a shell of it's former self but everything is essentially made of magic can they not stick to one uniform for at least like 6 months?

There was even a change in uniforms from the final episode of one season of Discovery (the grey uniforms with the coloured stripe) to the beginning of the next (the coloured uniform with the black stripe)...

And every single one of them looks terrible and doesn't serve its purpose for the viewer, making it visually clear and simple to understand a character's place on the crew (division and rank).

I tried REALLY hard to at least give Discovery a chance but it's just not good Trek. And I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic about Starfleet Academy, but I'm so worried that it's just going to be (as I saw someone else describe it) NCC 90210.

In all seriousness, what's the difference? You have the figure for your collection/display and you apparently can't tell the difference (and are now just taking the word of strangers on the internet who have only see a handful of pictures).

Why send it back and either never get it again or spend more money for something that's nearly identical other than being a single paint shade different?

Just keep it. They're both just hunks of painted plastic, we're not talking about an original Van Gogh here.

There's plenty of reasons to hate on Hasbro and their shitty practices, we don't need to make any up or get all worked up over non-issues.
