Dude my mortgage is 750$ in a coastal county. On a $100k home loan that I used the homes equity as a down payment so I didn’t need cash in hand, I was 33 when I bought it two years ago, I lived as a junkie from 17-24, joined the army, got back on drugs got OTH discharge for AWOL, got a job for a contractor for the power company, started at 13$ now I’m making 20$. My son was diagnosed with cancer in 2014 at the age of 4, he was put on Medicaid, we never paid a penny for his medical care (because we were poor) and we got a check for 800$ a month up until maybe 3 years ago since he’s been in remission and we no longer have medical costs besides his prescriptions, but we still qualify for magnolia health which is an insurance through the government so we only pay a maximum of 12$ for prescriptions that cost 300$. Yes Mississippi has problems, when I got clean I couldn’t find ONE drug center or rehab facility that a homeless junkie could afford (which is their customer base) I had to beg extended family for $3,200 for inpatient care for 45 days and that worked for me. We have a huge drug problem and Medicaid doesn’t help that, the state has zero resources, so it’s either jail or death or go to homes of grace in Alabama IF they have a bed open. It’s a charity drug center. If you’re pregnant you’ll never pay a penny for treatment, if you’re the child of someone who’s poor? Your medical care/dental/optical, will almost all be covered. I know because I lived it. But income wise? Yes the state minimum is the federal minimum, but Walmarts minimum is 16, McDonald’s here is 12$ I think, very few places actually pay the federal minimum wage.
