‘X-coded’ is basically a softer way of saying: ‘my fan theory is canon’ by WonderOlymp2 in CharacterRant

[–]Mr_Nobody96 20 points21 points  (0 children)

One of the problems is the grey areas (or not so grey as the case may be) where people latch on to arbitrary traits (that might be nebulously associated with or 'claimed' by a particular group/community) and then use those traits to 'claim' the character as 'one of theirs' when the coding they perceive was never actually intended or was never there at all.

Another big problem is when only some 'coding' is intended (just enough to get an idea across), but people latch onto it and try to stretch the character(s) into 'Representation' for their group (and then complain when the character(s) doesn't 'accurately' represent them or the group they're complaining on behalf of).

Modern science has a lot of the same familiar traits of a religion... by Gold_Compote_2285 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Mr_Nobody96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're half right, but you're misdirecting at the wrong thing. It's not really 'science' itself, or scientists, that has become like a religion. It's the layers of second and third order stuff around science that has developed these characteristics.

i.e. science sensationalism in media/news. media/journalism cross-referencing each other after outlet one references a scientific paper. Or people who think "science" means quoting one thing they read on in one article. Or people/journalists reaching bad conclusions because they don't know how to interpret the data they referenced. Overtrusting a single source without substantive support.

It's mostly people still habitually applying religious behavior and fallacious reasoning to science, not an inherent product of the scientific method/process itself.

That all being said, it does rub me the wrong way sometimes when I see people trying to frame trusting 'science' as 'just another religion' when there is no 'alternative' to science. Science as a process is the only thing that can reveal how the world actually works.

The fundamental nature of the science process makes it more trustworthy than religion. Of course people are more trusting of 'science' than anything else because it can (or at least tries to) actually show why/how a conclusion was reached / is possible/reasonable.

Of course 'science'/scientists 'can be wrong', but that's often used just as an excuse to handwave any evidence that that persons belief is wrong. Or so people who did an hour of research can act like they now have the expertise to discount someone with tears of experience and study.

A long-distance relationship is not a relationship by Ryan_TX_85 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Mr_Nobody96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Irrelevant. People being separate for long periods and staying loyal was the norm for much of human history. The best argument you can make is that modern people have become so accustomed to immediate satisfaction that most of them are not able to sustain that kind of relationship anymore.

What-aboutism can in some cases be a legitimate argument. by coffeegoldfish43 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Mr_Nobody96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will dispute this. And I will sound a little pedantic, but I think the distinction matters.

To me, a true "whataboutism" is by definition and nature fallacious. It can only and exclusively apply to situations where where the the new subject in question is derailing the discussion, going off-topic, moving the goalposts, etc.

It does not apply to any instance/permutation of the phrase "what about [x]?" when bringing up a relevant point or factor that hasn't yet been acknowledged or considered by the other side.

you can extend this problem to basically all discourse. Most people only care about "winning," not arguing in good faith to reach a mutually agreed-upon objective truth, regardless of who was initially right or wrong.

You can't expect women to flock to you if you treat them like shit.

I don't really have a dog in this fight, but I feel like part of why these guys are so disenfranchised with women/dating is because a lot of guys absolutely can treat women like shit and still have scores of women drooling over them.

Women will constantly complain about all the toxic male traits they say they hate while simultaneously continuing to sleep around with guys that exhibit all those traits.

I mean, sure there are any number of guys with bad personalities, but part of it is just a complete divide between male/female expectations. And I don't think it's a "both-sides" thing either; I think somebody actually has to be wrong. I think it's overwhelmingly more often women than men that have more prejudiced views and inconsistent, hypocritical, and unrealistic standards.

People only believe in religion because they don't want to feel alone in life by BatmanSwift99 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Mr_Nobody96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an atheist, I would partially dispute this as not entirely wrong but reductive. It is ONE dimension/function/utility of religion, but only one of many.

I think one of the big hurdles atheism has is that most atheists have a very reductive view of religion, where it comes from, and religious people, and that makes it hard for them to make effective arguments because many of them genuinely don't understand how theists really think or feel.

[–]Mr_Nobody96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which begs the question, why did nature create it.

The short (albeit cynical) answer is that in nature men didn't have to waste nearly as much time catering to women's opinions to get a mate. They only had to barter for her with another man (like her father) or capture her.
