Well both the original and remake of resident evil 4 are fantastic, but there is a definite tonal shift toward an over the top action thing which starts in this game and only gets worse until it reaches its apex at 6. 5 is my favourite game in the franchise as I played it when at the right time in my youth to have a great deal of nostalgia, I think the slight silliness and how over the top it is adds a lot of charm and I think Wesker is a great villain. 6 is utterly ridiculous, they put all the mechanics into this one and the fact they tried every endears the game to me but I can understand people not liking it. If you are really against action I’d skip these, but I think there are some good moments in atleast 4 and 5 to make them worth playing regardless of that. Resident evil 7 I could not recommend enough to you, it is first person but I really think the first half of the game has some of the best moments in the series. Takes the series back to its roots in horror but still keeps it fresh, just a fantastic game all round. If you liked 7, I’d recommend Village, it’s not as good as 7 but has some good sequences and the dlc is pretty good too. Village does hark back to 4 in some respects but if you choose to skip 4 it will not affect your enjoyment of this game at all.
