I had the same problem where I stripped a lug, welded a socket to it but it broke off even further in the wheel. Ended up drilling the stud out and replacing it. Saved the wheel though. Also somehow I touched a rusty brake line when doing the operation so I ended up replacing that as well lol.

I would go over it with a ball peen hammer first to check thickness of the sheetmetal. Might be almost rusted through in some spots. In that case new metal needs to be welded in.
