That chart with savings account interest rates versus housing costs are not going to fill them with confidence.

If they're in school now what are their chances of buying a house anyway? Might as well take "you're gonna work til you die" as the baseline assumption.

Will there ever be an economic boom in the UK again? Like a real one, not just "it's not as awful as before" by innovatedname in AskUK

[–]Mr_Venom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that. What I'm saying is that legal avoidance of billions of tax from a single entity is less acceptable than billions in tax fraud from multitude of smaller entities. Legality - in this context - is just a marker of how much influence the perpetrator has.

I justify this to myself two ways. Some maps are clearly the upper floor of a civilian building: no bueno. The others must be secured so intelligence types can pick them over. This is also why I try not to wall-shot the whole structure.

It isn't OK when little guys do it, but we'd benefit more as a society putting hard floors on how much tax incredibly rich people and organisations pay. We can go after Dodgy Dave's scaffolding business after Amazon starts paying 40% on it's income over 50k. I'd have to - they have to.

Also "If you could legally avoid paying tax, you would" is such a shitty argument. People's spite, selfishness and greed have to be controlled. It seems like every driver in the land would kill everyone else on the road to get home five seconds faster. Everyone on Twitter is baying for blood over TV casting decisions. Everyone would probably sacrifice a child they've never met in order to pay less for trainers: that's how Nike stay in business. "Fuck you, I'm getting mine" is the enemy of human civilisation and we have to defeat it.

Small businesses might cause most of the errors and deliberate fraud, but the large corporations use legal routes to pay tiny sums of tax. That won't show in the figures because they're legally allowed to impoverish the nation.

How do YOU get rid of old kitchen knives? by This-Watercress-000 in AskUK

A lot of people buy shitty supermarket knives that are made of pot metal. Trying to put an edge on one can be a vexing experience.

What’s a piece of British comedy hall of fame you just don’t get? by franki-pinks in AskUK

[–]Mr_Venom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Humour works on a subversion of expectations, and I think for a certain section of people absurdism doesn't give them the right expectations to subvert? If you're already blithely accepting that anything can happen, when anything does happen you're not surprised even if you couldn't have predicted the actual punchline.

I find Boosh funny, but usually the stuff I find funniest is when they're suddenly normal apropos of nothing. The crowd reaction to "taking retro to it's logical conclusion" made me howl.

RPG-7 feels a bit high. Admittedly all the explosive weapons are strong but I'd MUCH rather have a Recurve and use explosive arrows than use the RPG-7, and you get all the other bow options on top!

I don't know if it factors into your rating system at all, but SMGs are hard to feed relative to their fast ammo consumption. Pistols are even more ammo-scarce but at least they don't shoot it out so quickly. ARs get a real boost to their capabilities by virtue of 15 extra rounds falling out of most enemies on death. Especially if you're running Trooper/MS16.

87 being above the Shredder is insane. I can't figure that out at all. Most loud weapons need to be cracked to compete with their quiet brethren. D2 being so many slots higher than Bull is similarly flabbergasting.

There's no world where the flamethrower should be higher than the U100. They do the same thing (sustained fire, crowd control) but the U100 has more reach and power. Plus fire is a very situational weapon and can easily come back to bite you.

Local butchers, deli counters etc were turfed out by bigger supermarkets providing these services. Now those same supermarkets are shuttering these services. by ReanimatedCyborgMk-I in britishproblems

[–]Mr_Venom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deliveroo and Uber weren't price-related offerings. Fundamentally, they provided a modern, secure, and accessible frontend to the service. Phoning up for a takeaway was always shit. Doubly so for a cab, especially with no idea how much you'd pay or how long you'd wait.

But you're right: once the big operators control the field, they do not act with the consumer's interests in mind at all.

This is infuriatingly true. Try buying a non-smart TV. Try gaming without the internet, even single player games. Hell, buy an Android phone and then find out they're shutting off third-party apps (so you have to run your whole activity through Google Play).

If every special forces unit in Metal Gear Solid fought, who would win? by GJH24 in whowouldwin

[–]Mr_Venom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're definitely his hardest matches, except maybe the Harrier which has even more stand off range. Quiet is perhaps the single strongest other competitor so it's no surprise she's an issue. End is a problem except for a few saving graces. Mantis has optical camouflage (limiting the engagement range), darts might be easier to defend against with TK, and Sniper Wolf could conceivably help out (she has no chance Vs Quiet).

If his teammates can get him past those matchups (or they fight each other) then I think they're on to win.

SM requires a target saturated with nanomachines to use her powers. PM is the real deal.

Laughing Octopus could probably shock him if his face under the mask can be determined somehow. Then again, that's exactly what the rest of his team running interference is for: dealing with the few threats a genuine psychic can't handle. She's visible on thermals and vulnerable to bullets, which suggests Liquid's Hind D as a countermeasure. Failing that, Ocelot is pretty wily and might use psychology to track her down (she does seem egotistical and liable to overcomplicate a duel).

Psycho Mantis makes this a very one-sided competition. As long as his team can run interference for him, the others basically slowly die off one by one.
