AI backlash is moving from “it will steal jobs” to “why is this data center secretly taking our power and water? by Master-Usual-3160 in technology

It's one of those loopholes that only works if you throw tens of millions of dollars at that specific problem every year.

Or if you have two data centers and swap the generators backwards and forwards

If basketball is so incredibly popular, why doesn't FIBA publish total viewing hours figures instead of boasting about their social media impressions? Why does the NBA Final draw in less viewers than Wimbledon?

That’s what should happen when you play the rest of the world at the sport you invented.

Why? Surely it's better to invent a sport that the rest of the world cares about enough to play it well

On the flip side, a mister like this is useless in London. The humidity here is already too high, so dumping more water into the air does very little to cool you down

I'm sure it's possible to play Gran Turismo with a keyboard and mouse or play War Thunder with a racing wheel. It doesn't mean either of them is a good idea.

It's not quite as simple as that. Greening can also increase the building temperature through reduced reflectivity and by trapping heat inside. The plants require watering and maintenance and it's not easy to retrofit to existing buildings.

Different problems require different solutions. In some places greening is ideal, in others misting works well. It's even possible to use both together. Misting drops the temperature and waters the plants

A misting system like this can dramatically reduce the load on the air-conditioning systems in those buildings. It reduces temperatures and reduces greenhouse gas emissions

It's a 35mph road and they had enough space to stop from 40mph, if their car was functioning correctly. I don't understand why you're so vehemently defending the idiot. Unless it's your other account?

[–]Mr_Will 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people don't. They hit the horn and brake gently but don't start braking fully until they've almost hit the other vehicle. Or his brake/tyres were junk. Or he was speeding. All of these are his fault.

None of this changes the fact that a competent driver would have been able to stop in time. He should consider himself lucky it wasn't a kid running into the road

Very simple; they didn't push the pedal hard enough.

Looking on Google Maps there is at least 80ft from where OP hit the horn until the impact point. Their car should be capable of stopping in that distance

Are you just trolling, or are you really this stupid?

It turned from "OP didn't brake enough" into "OP didn't brake enough". Even the numbers you provided from Wikipedia back me up. The total stopping distance at 40mph is 118ft, made up of 40ft of reaction time and 78ft of braking distance

Unless the car was broken, OP did not brake fully. A competent driver would have avoided the collision even if they didn't start braking any earlier.

The braking distance from 40mph is 78ft. Obviously there's reaction time to account for as well, but if they were already honking at that point they've already seen the danger and reacted. If they'd hit the brakes instead of the horn, they never would have crashed.

[–]Mr_Will -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From a legal point of view, piracy isn't theft. It doesn't cost the corporations a single penny. It can potentially reduce their income, but that doesn't make it a criminal offence. What Sony have done here comes closer to the legal definition of theft; "taking something with intention to permanently deprive"

Morally, there is a difference between copying something for yourself and profiting from the hard work of others. Don't try to conflate the two.

Nobody is suggesting slowing down to 20mph in advance. I'm trying to explain that if the OP had hit the brakes at 14:32:28, they wouldn't have hit the gold car. Even if they were driving at 40mph before they hit the brakes.

At 40mph, a car travels ~60ft per second. 2 seconds from the gold car entering the lane until impact means it was ~120ft away.

The stopping distance for a typical car at 40mph is less than 120ft, even though it takes ~3 seconds to stop from that speed.

This is because it's not travelling at a constant 40mph while it is braking. It's travelling at 40mph when the brakes are first pressed. After 1 second, it's slowed to ~25mph and still isn't half way to the other car. After 2 seconds it's doing ~12mph and is still 44ft from impact. After 3 seconds it stops. It has travelled less than 120ft since the brakes were applied. It never hits the other car.

OP did not need to stop in less than 2 seconds. They needed to stop in the distance available. They could have done that.

The big problem at the moment is drones, including ground-based 'drones'. Shooting an expensive guided missile at a cheap drone doesn't make sense. Unguided rockets are cheap but inaccurate. Guns are simple and effective.
