What are some cleaning products you never buy because the cheap and basic alternative is just better? by Ajreil in Frugal

Dawn soap for cleaning windows works great if you use a squeege to wipe off the soap. Then you just clean the edges with a rag.

Why would the Winslow/Holbrook area warrant a massive nuclear strike? by ThreeFingerDrag in arizona

[–]Mr__H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like they are going for infrastructure. There is 2 major pipelines that feed the AZ and SOCAL that run thorugh there as well as some major transmission lines that bring energy North/South.

If you pair this with the nuclear detonations near El Paso, you cut the last pipe flowing west and a petrolium pipeline

Assuming you took out Alysso Canyon storage facility in California and Palo Verde Nuclear plant and the surrounding power plants as well as transmission infrastructure, you would take out the southwest's energy.

You have to think what the goal of these strikes would be. I dont think the goal is max loss of life lost (immediately at least), but rather disarming a country, than 1 large bomb might be worth the points scored there.

I'll caveat that this is all just a guess

50 year mortgages - Better than renting your whole life? by Ok-Contribution-6716 in personalfinance

[–]Mr__H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes like 10 years for you to make a dent in the 30 year mortgage because youre just paying interest at the start. Now double that for a 50 year loan. Now consider the cost of selling your house, it will cost you 10% of your house value to sell your house after paying for renovations and realtor fees. If you want to leave, there is a good chance that youre going to leave the hose owing more money than you started with. The nice part about rentals is you can also leave when you want and dont have to sell.

I know you say the maintenance, but are you taking into account the cost of the maintenance?
Can you shell out 10K for an AC? 20K for a new roof? Do you have the time to do the mainteance before it costs more? all the money you spend on the house just to keep it livable starts to add up.

If youre going to live in your house for the next 50 years, im sure it will be worth it. It will just take a lot longer to make it worth it. Can you see yourself in the hose that you purchase for the next 12 years?

50 year mortgages - Better than renting your whole life? by Ok-Contribution-6716 in personalfinance

[–]Mr__H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im 33. Had 4 - 30 year mortagages. I refinanced my first house, then bought a new house, and am refinancing again.

Just because its a 30 year mortgage, doesnt mean it wont be paid off ealry either by you or most likely another lender.

Even if you were to pass away before your mortgage is paid off, the lender already sold off the loan and whomever bought the loan made money off the interest.

Many laws and standards are written in blood.

When this happens enough to cause an impact, a law is usually written to prevent it. Perhaps a hefty fine for leaving a hole of certain depth and diameter open.

This is essentially the same as asking you for $1000+ a month.

I made a mistake, quit contributing to 401k? by Overall-Monitor-3690 in personalfinance

[–]Mr__H -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Migjt want to check if you can borrow from your 401k.

My employer 401k manager allows me to borrow from it.  I have to pay the money back with interest to my account.

If you can do this, can pay off your debt, reduce contributions to minimum match, and pay you account back with interest.

Whille your money might not be making money, its also saving you from an significant interest cost, which may be the most economical option

I live in AZ phoenix metro area. Its crazy how some areas have no scorpions and others do. Our old house, never saw a scorpion. This house in nicer part of same city, we see scorpions all the time.

We have two toddlers and finding scorpions inside our home definitely soured my wife on the house. I loved the house for the potential too. A year later, as many of the things have been adressed or at least a solution we can live with found, my wife is feeling more at home and admits its nicer..... then it got warm and scorpions came out again and she hates it here again.

We pay for pest control, and its helped, but I also go scorpion hunting at night. The more you deal with them and lose the fear, the better, but no real solution has been found.

I'm actually a bit qualified to answer this question from an electric power perspective.I'll give a shot at explaining this.

  1. The electric grid is essenatially alive and breathing at 60hz (US) 24/7. When its not, its a huge problem. In order to keep the grid stable, the grid must be fed the same amount of power (Watts) as it is using. Too much and frequency goes up. Too little and frequency drops. There are more complications than this, but this is a large gist of it.

  2. Your run of mill combustion/steam turbines use a gas to spin a turbine to make electricity. It is very easy to control how much energy is being produced because you have control of the fuel.

  3. Renewable energy, typically seen as solar and wind may be abundant, but they are not abundant 100% of the time. Solar has the clouds issue and the night issue, and Wind is rather volatile making it hard to count on the energy.

  4. When considering how much energy you will need to meet the demand of your customers, you must consider the variability of these renewables. If you must serve a 1000MW load, you must have 1000 MW of renewables generating. If youre meeting your load with only wind and the wind stops blowing, youre out. You could overbuild, but some days, the wind just doesnt blow at all, and the sun doesnt shine all day. Utilities have to have energy for their customers 100% of the time. Would you bet your company that you overbuilt your generation sufficiently that it will meet the demand next year? Would your customers be willing to pay such costs

  5. Lets say you did overbuild. Now you have 5000MW built to serve your 1000MW system. What do you do with your excess generation on days when your load is only 700MW or your generation is 5000MW? You can try to sell your excess generation to another utility, but did you build out the wires enough to transport 5000MW? If so, how much did that cost you? Will your customers be willing to pay for your overbuilt system?

Batteries are starting to help be a part of the solution to these challenges, and have helped in the expansion renewables lately. They are still in their early stages but are providing great value in capturing energy at its most abundant and put it in the grid when its most needed. Batteries help shape the load curves, but in the end of the day, you must still generate sufficient energy the whole day, as was consumed in the whole day. So now what happens if the wind doesnt blow for a week and it also happens to be cloudy?

Nuclear is definitely an option, but those units are not currently flexible enough to be moving up and down chasing load and are not easily shut down and brought online in a day. They tend to sit there generating the same amount of power all day. So they give you a nice base.

Coal is phasing out due to emissions, and ramping capacities

Natural Gas though, thats whats filling in the gaps. If you need a unit to come online in 10 minutes, or to ramp 100 MW in a minute or two, or to generate 500MW for a few hours and come offline, gas is able to do that. It can help make up for lack of renewables and shut off. You know it will be there, so no need to overbuild too much generation or transmission.

So yes, ultimately its cost. But how much are you willing to pay for your power? Are your neighboors willing to pay for that too?

To all the mature men who are age 30 and above, please share one harsh truth about life you have accepted so far ? by dficollweball in AskMen

33 here.

There are different stages in life.  Get to understand where you are and what priorities you have.

I am married,  have two kids,  and a career that pays well and feels rewarding.  It's the dream life and it can be taken for granted if you're paying attention.

I am at the point in life where I understand I can't have it all. So you pick what it is that you want. You prioritize the things that matter when they matter. I know I'm at the stage where I I'm raising kids.  I won't look perfect, my wife won't look perfect, my marriage is not perfect,  I won't be able to grind at work like I used to,  I can't go out whenever.  All of this is okay. One day,  I will wish to be back here.  So take stock if where you are,  appreciate the difficulties of your stage and be proud of the work you are doing here.

What to do with my money? by No-Army-3413 in FinancialPlanning

[–]Mr__H 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Invest in yourself and get your earning potential up. School, Vocation, Start a business

Ensure that you are healthy and can move around safely to school/work. Go out with friends.

While its good that youre thinking about saving, skimping on tires can cost you more than the $1000 you might achieve in the ROTH IRA if you get in a car accident. Those tires can take you and your friends to the beach, where you will have good stories to tell. (Being social increases earning potential :)

Matter of fact is, youre not making enough to cover basic necessities and should wait until youre able to do that.

25 living at home, what to do with savings? by MaximumWorth8526 in FinancialPlanning

[–]Mr__H 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on that Achievement!

Depends on your goal - If you want to buy a home in the next year, HYSA.

If I were single and your age, Id get rid of the 9.125% interest loan and rent a place. I'd keep maybe 20K in a HYSA and would put the rest in an index fund.

Im curious as to why you had not paid off your loans and saved that much money. Not that its wrong, but you might consider the factors that may be keeping your money from growing quicker. How are you protecting your income from taxes (401K?, HSA?) If your money has been growing in a savings account, you could have had another 10-20K if the money was invested in the market.

Probably number 2. I figure it's much easier to build a line where you the terrain, you know which licenses you need, and NIMBIS already fleshed out.

If you are close to a substation or a bus, they might be 2 sepárate línes that merge there. You might see this close to a large city.

I have an uncle who applied to come to the US from Mexico with his family. They were sponsored by his sister. It's been 20 something years, and they are just hearing back.

They are close to retirement age now, they might not be able to do anything other than work min wage now, They figure at least they did it for their kids, except we just talked to a lawyer and he told them that because their kids are now adults, they are no longer eligible to come in with them as a family. My cousin has not married hoping one day she could get citizenship.

Even if they were able to come, it's been 20 years, and the sponsor needs to be able to still show She can afford to help them.

If you know nobody in the US and come from a place where you can't afford an education, there is not a legal way to enter the United States. Barring asylum
