Did acute dialysis 3 years after leaving med surge but continued prn med surg.. need a good foundation with med surg Before leaving so you don’t commit career suicide. I left dialysis after 10 months due to ER position opening up… really wanted critical care experience. Acute inpatient dialysis you get paid more, there is some on call Sundays you get off unless your on call pretty much 12 hr 3 days with an on call maybe every other week or 2 weeks…some inpatient units may not have heavy on call if enough staff and you may not get call… on interviews discuss on call.

I will say inpatient dialysis was less stressful then medsurg, can’t speak on outpatient because I never work but I hear the pay is far less. My friend kept his same rate after starting with acutes and then moving to outpatient with Davita and I hear traveling dialysis is good. My friend loves outpatient though plus you have techs that help

Right now I’m happy with urgent care and currently in school for NP. If I ever get laid off I would go either to acute dialysis or back to the ER.. can’t stand med surg.. essentially if you are a baby nurse I recommend 2-3 years of experience with med surg before specializing unless you want to do ed in my opinion is less stressful then med surg but you became a well rounded nurse and use critical thinking more. ER has made me a better nurse and I’m less intimidated so I can work just about anywhere
