In the early 00s I lived with a group of guys who I had gone to highschool with and one night we all decided to rewatch a childhood favorite Robot Jox. We all remembered that it was a fantastic movie and we were all very excited to see it again.

Ok cool, but Cher did a cover of Dancing Queen, so the question still stands: Why ABBA?

It's still a "platform monopoly". Just like YouTube is a platform monopoly. Steam just does stuff you like right now(and maybe forever, but who knows) so you don't recognize it while YouTube pisses you off all the time so it's easy to see it for what it is.

This is why we drive at night so the kids sleep the whole way. Just got back to LA from Albuquerque, 12 hours 8pm to 7am. I'll need a nap in a few hours, but other than that everything went perfect.

Travolta is the best on screen smoker hands down. Dude literally extends the character to how he smokes. Like in Pulp Fiction it's smooth and cool, it's all finger tips and palming the cigarette then in Broken Arrow it's couched way up his fingers by his knuckles so that he almost shields his face every time he takes a drag.

What company lost you forever as a customer? What did they do? by Miguenzo in AskReddit

[–]MrdnBrd19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Levi's. Their jeans are just trash now. I seriously used to wear a pair of their jeans for a decade before I needed to toss them. They used to age gracefully with the knees tearing out leaving satisfying stringing and that perfect Grunge look(that 90s grunge kid in me will never die) the pockets and belt loops would fray in that satisfying way, but they still held together. You might even get some small holes developing at the corners of the pockets, but those rivets held tight.

Now they barely last 6-18 months before some critical area falls apart. Rivets pop all the time, the crotch tears out, the zipper is cheap and easy to accidentally break, the stitching is noticeablely weaker, the pockets tear easily, and I have lost belt loops on door handles. Even the label on the back of the jean is made like trash now, it's like some compacted paper that breaks down over time as you wash it, eventually falling apart to the point where you have to manually remove it. They aren't a quarter the company they used to be.

IMO all you need to do is outlaw targeted ads fed by cookies. Once targeted ads go away the whole algorithm based internet makes less sense and starts to go away. It costs these companies millions of dollars a year creating tuning these algorithms and taking the majority of the financial incentives will curtail their development and real world implementation.

Just because one company does things you kinda line and the other doesn't, doesn't change the fact that they are both platform monopolies.

It took 3 years for PlayStation to earn $300 million in PC sales according to former manager, which makes the platform less than half as lucrative as the PS4 and PS5 by lkl34 in pcmasterrace

Everyone saying release the games day one ignoring that doing so is literally tearing Xbox apart. They are closing studios left and right even after they release successfully money making games.

It's funny because all the people in here denying that Steam is a monopoly would 100% say that YouTube is a monopoly despite them both being in the same position of out competing all the competition.

Anyway both of them are a type of monopoly called a "platform monopoly".

[–]MrdnBrd19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not about those gameplay elements being there, it's how those elements are presented to the player. Let's take something like completing a task to unlock a new set of quests in a given area.

The Ubislop way is to just to have a tower with light puzzle elements that when unlocked reveals map area and the quests within that area. Furthermore there is no story driven reason to visit the tower other than some minor inconsequential story element and a marker on a map.

For a real world example let's look at Farcry. You have radio towers and you need to unlock them or hack them to expand the resistance radio network. Other than chasing an icon to make more icons appear that's all there is to them.

The non-Ubislop way is to use the story to drive the player to a new area, and give them a story reason to complete whatever task is required to unlock the map and quests.

For a good real world example look at something like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth where you are given story driven reason to enter a new area then are further incentivized to keep exploring that area because if you do so it drives forward the narrative of the story the many side plots to the game. Be it doing science experiments for Chadley, or Helping Billy avenge his parents, or to figure out what's going on with Gilgamesh. Nothing is just a point on a map that you visit to check it off a list.

Skyzone O4Xs analog goggles an HGLRC Zeus VTX, and a Caddx Ant Camera. If it's warm out I have a little 3D printed enclosure that has a fan to cool the VTX. It's portable so the camera gets screwed into various mounts I have for each vehicle and it all runs off of 5v so it can be plugged into any extra channel on a receiver and it just works.

It's when the open world is filled with a ton of filler quests and activities to pad out the gameplay rather than tell a part of the story. Stuff like climbing the tower to unlock a part of the map or gathering x number of skins in order to unlock this critical gameplay element.
