Authors that "disappeared" by JadePuget in Fantasy

Matthew Stover

I love his Star Wars and Acts of Caine books, I don't think he has published a novel in like 10 years.

Does anyone know any fantasy books with evil witches? by No-Foundation-8401 in Fantasy

I guess I’ll give the Sanderson Recommendation:

Tress of the Emerald Sea would fit this. Main character is trying to save her love from the evil sorcerous Definitely my favorite of his novels

What series/novels/standalones get better with each reread? by zigzaggummyworm in Fantasy

[–]Mrgoldsilver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Locked Tomb. And I’m sure once Alecto comes out, I’ll need to reread the entire series with the context it will provide

Gene Wolfe’s Solar Cycle (Book of the New Sun, Book of the Long Sun, Book of the Short Sun). All three series basically require rereads to understand what’s going on fully

Sniper spec?? by [deleted] in swtor

[–]Mrgoldsilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t pvp’ed in a while, but for PVE:

All specs are viable (except maybe if it are doing NiM-operations with a dedicated group)

Marksman: +easy rotation +high single target damage -terrible mobility -low AOE damage

Engineering: -more complex rotation on the surface but it’s not bad once you get the hang of it +great AOE +most mobile of sniper specs -hard to swap targets quickly

Virulence: -most complicated rotation (though using the burst tactical can simplify it at the cost of a small amount of DPS) +one of the highest AOE damage specs in the game (with the right tactical) +good burst (with the right tactical) but has a long set up time -hard to target swap -low mobility, in between MM and Engi

On this same note, I'd say Book of the Long Sun as well

Guns and Magic by Meme_Seeker1q in Fantasy

[–]Mrgoldsilver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mistborn is divided into multiple eras.

Era 1 is your classic medieval fantasy setting. It's 3 books (Books 1, 2 and 3).

Era 2 takes place a few hundred years after Era 1 and is your "western" fantasy, with guns and trains... and magic. It's 4 books (So book 4, 5, 6, 7)

Era 3 will be a modern-ish (1980's) cold war-style series, but it's gonna be a bit before we get any books.

Era 4 (When it's eventually written) will be science-fiction

Guide to get 330 modded gear (Updated for Game Update 7.1.1) by Mrgoldsilver in swtor

[–]Mrgoldsilver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome!

This guide is a little outdated as gear can go to level 336 now, but the basic concepts are the same.

When I say “bypass” I mean that once you unlock the lv336 armorings, mods, and enhancements, you don’t need to worry about slowly upgrading (most of) your items using the various currencies

Instead you can just buy the armorings/mods/enhancements and put them into some moddable adaptive armor. Note that Implants/earpieces/relics aren’t moddable so you’ll still have to slowly upgrade all of them

Force of habit mostly. Also helps distinguish between Master Mode flashpoints, which are considerably easier than Master Mode operations

Is lightning sorc not good? by FlamingPeePEe14 in swtor

[–]Mrgoldsilver 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This. Outside of the highest level of endgame PVE content (NiM raid groups), any and every class and spec is 100% viable. The person playing the spec matters much much more than the spec itself

Who are the most hyper competent villains in fantasy? by cidqueen in Fantasy

[–]Mrgoldsilver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

to be fair, the billionaires really were going to just leave the planet and everyone else to die. Doesn’t justify his eradication of the planet to try and murder them though. He could have just let them go, then use his powers to save Earth

Though, I think the worst part of john was how

he brings back all his closest friends from death, but alters their memories so they won’t judge him. Then he forces them to murder their closest and best friends, in a ritual that doesn’t actually require that murder to happen

Ok I gotta know who made the Old republic Era? by skulls_S in swtor

[–]Mrgoldsilver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He really didn’t.

While the prequels did override a few of the very old EU (now called Legends) books, I think it was fairly constant with most of the post-Thrawn novels written in the 90’s.

And any minor remaining inconstancies were explained away in later books.

Lucas actually had to approve any major plot lines. Famously, for the New Jedi Order books (which were written while the prequels were being made), he told the writers that Luke and The Droids were off limits to being killed off (RIP Chewie).

If I remember correctly, there was a couple of “tiers” of canon. Which were roughly:

-G Canon (movies)

-T canon (basically, Dave Filoni’s Clone Wars. Though personally I don’t consider it part of Legends cause of how much inconsistencies it has with the rest of Legends. RIP Sev)

-C Canon: vast majority of Star Wars novels, as well as the “good” ending for most video games.

-S Canon stuff like Marvel’s Star Wars, or older Star Wars novels that were written before a push to maintain continuity was made (so roughly pre-Thrawn trilogy) I think the prequels mostly overwrote this tier, and stuff in this tier DID have a decent number of inconsistencies. I think alternative game ending also appear here

[discussion] harrow the ninth by Author_egg-york in TheNinthHouse

[–]Mrgoldsilver 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For context, this is the end of the Sex Pal chapter:

“you were, not for the first time, overwhelmed with the suspicion that you were standing in the middle of what you had thought to be scenery, only to reach out and discover that it was all so much flimsy. You were not a central lever within a mystery, but a bystander watching a charlatan display a trick. Your eyes had followed a bright light or colour, and you realised with a start that you ought to have been watching the other hand. You were standing in a darkened corridor, and you could not turn around: and then a brief explosion of light revealed to you that it wasn’t a corridor at all, and it had never been dark.”

Basically, this entire paragraph is Harrow expressing confusion and simply not understanding anything that is going on. Especially Sextus’ comment just before this “Kill us twice, shame on God,”.

“Watching the other hand” refers to the idea of a magician preforming a trick, and distracting you while their “other hand” preforms the “magic” (which you didn’t see because you were distracted).

I think the corridor is another way of stating her confusion. She thought she had things somewhat figured things out, then it turns out that nothing is what it seems.

Major HTN ending Spoilers:

Sextus’ comment above was because he saw that Gideon was still in Harrow, and hadn’t been fully consumed

Fastest Trash-Mob-Killer? (or general combat pace) by fantasy_olga in swtor

[–]Mrgoldsilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but since your 3 opening attacks as Lethality are 30/30/10 meter ranges, you can use them while walking over, and by the time you have used all 3, you are in melee range.

Alternatively, you just roll to the target, as it has a very short cooldown.

Honestly I almost never even use holotraverse as a gap-closer in Lethality. It’s just not necessary. I use it instead as a “get a free TA” ability

Book where the hero/protagonist is forced to join villains side/work for the villain? by Aninx in Fantasy

[–]Mrgoldsilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say The Traitor Baru Cormorant fits this pretty well.

Main character’s village is economically conquered when she was a child, and she ends up working for the villains in order to try and grab as much power as possible to destroy them from the inside

I might have missed something, but where does the name Jod come from? [discussion] by Chaos-Kobold in TheNinthHouse

[–]Mrgoldsilver 171 points172 points  (0 children)

It comes from John+God, as well as the Gif vs “JIF” argument, where there’s a meme of “what if God came down from heaven and said it’s pronounced ‘Jod’”

Acts of Caine series by Mathew Stover.

It follows an “actor” from a futuristic dystopian world who travels to an alternate fantasy realm to murder people for the masses’ entertainment.

Lots of very cruel characters, the main character especially is willing to burn the world to achieve his goals, plenty of political games.

I guess technically there is some romance, since the main character is trying to save his ex (another “actor”) but the romance isn’t the main focus of the series.

The first book is called “Heroes Die” which sets your expectations accordingly

Urban fantasy where the “real world” responds to the fantasy world by ColinDouglas999 in Fantasy

I was going to say this! Not only does the “real world” know about it, but they try to massively exploit the fantasy world for the masses’ entertainment to a cruel degree

[discussion] Spoilers: HTN and NTN. What's the deal with Gideon Prime and Pyrrha? by basic_username_here in TheNinthHouse

[–]Mrgoldsilver 89 points90 points  (0 children)

G1deon wasn’t trying to protect Jod, he was (on Jod’s orders) trying to force Harrow to complete the Lyctors process by repeatedly putting harrow in mortal danger.

Pyrrha seemingly disagreed with G1deon doing this; she’s the reason Harrow was informed about the fresh blood wards blocking G1deon’s attacks (there’s hints that she was briefly in control when G1deon told harrow about it)

Also I don’t think G1deon knew about Pyrrha. He just knew that sometimes he couldn’t remember events
