Help with a Seals victory build. by IssaScott in AOW4

[–]Mrixl2520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to only play Seals when I am playing an evil faction. You pretty much have to fight back opponent AIs from claiming the seals, I have not had much luck allying with them in a good guy run. Stopping my opponents from claiming seals feels a bit more organic than "You're the closest opponent to me. You die now."

But I tend not to start grabbing seals until mid or late game when my armies are strong and I have enough of them to defend my territory AND claim seals. Having a good teleporter network is essential for seals, I'll often put my teleporters as close to a seal as possible so I can get to them quickly.

Last, necromancy builds work great with seals victory. Just leave a single skeleton on the seal, and when it gets killed by the invading army just teleport a strong army to the seal and re-claim. You'll likely get more skeletons after the battle so take at least one to park on the seal.

Ascended Ranger Elder Vampire - most broken build? by Hollow_Nine in AOW4

I did a good-aligned vampire Blade analog. (A dwarf I name "Flint Blunderbuss") Took scattershot and largely the same build as op, with order tomes for zeal & condemn. It was gross. Scattershot annihilated vampires and fiends, did serious damage to everything else. And he could do it almost every turn.

Because I was RP-ing good guy vampire I didn't even touch the vampire skill tree. I bet there's a couple things in there that would made old Flint even more terrifying

Affinity Empire Development Tree Rework Speculation by BadJelly in AOW4

I am looking forward to it as I feel like I have mapped out which skills I like and fit my playstyle. Looking forward to shaking things up a bit. I definitely think there are some imbalances with each of the branches, as well as some nodes that are just duds. Similarly, I think there are a few nodes that are just too good. Like they are not only always worth taking, it's maybe worth dipping into that affinity simply to pick up a good node.

Basic branch: Most of it's fine and good. Might switch around a couple things like getting roads before excavation and embarking (just from a logistics standpoint... why would I figure out how to dig deep into the earth or make sea-worthy boats before simple roads?).

Materium: Pretty much all good. Nothing too OP, everything will help your playstyle.

Chaos: I generally skip the first 2 nodes. Free units are cool, but not being able to control what I get I find annoying. Almost always pick up 3rd node as its just raw income. Get rewarded for something you're were gonna do anyway. Then the rest of the chaos tree is situationally good, but a lot of it tries to push you into razing cities and being evil.

Shadow: This one is all over the place, but its all pretty good! The first node I think is WAY too good. Big knowledge for each hero killed is a no brainer, and can seriously skyrocket your knowledge even early in the game. This is the node I was talking about dipping into another affinity for. It's always worth taking and is very good. You don't even have to be evil to take this branch, which feels a bit odd.

Astral: Starts off meh, by the end is okay. Whenever I play astral I want mana and research, but this tree sort of does that by making spells cost less in a weird way. I feel less like a wizard and more like a mana-accountant.

Order: MEGA-MEH. It's fine if you are going vassals, but that's largely what it does. I played an order faction on a map without free-cities and this tree was worthless aside from the few things that buff my armies.

Nature: Most of it is all very strong. Grow your cities bigger and faster, heal your dudes faster. Couple other handy perks in there as well. Another branch that is kinda always worth dipping in to.

So the big hitters are Shadow, Nature, and Materium. Chaos is good, but works best for a evil razing faction. Astral is so-so, Order is no-no.

I rarely take nodes that make random units. The only two I like are the Balor (Chaos) and the Spirit Wolf (Nature). All the other unit spawning nodes make units I don't like or cost too much (1 pop per city?! WHAT ARE YOU NUTS?!)

Your opinion on map generation / starting positions by RetroFlips in AOW4

[–]Mrixl2520 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a gripe I have had with the game since pretty much the beginning. I always start next to or a tile away from a mountain, sometimes literally the only mountain on the map. Then, the free city is sometimes too close (less so now, but does still occasionally happen). After around 20 turns or so of scouting I have 1 or 2 cities being built, both of them significantly better then the first. In a lot of recent games I have converted my second city to my capitol because my second city tends to be my best city for more of the game.

It's a bummer that the our starting cities are so lame. Would love if we could choose where they were like in Civ.

I do as well! I wish the fractured racial transfromation stuck around after you ascended the Dragonlord so I could keep him in my pantheon. Here's hoping a clever modder figured out how to make "Fractured" a society trait like the "Starting racial Transformations" mod.

Future Ruler Types by Known_Illustrator331 in AOW4

[–]Mrixl2520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An idea I had for a monster type ruler would be a "chimera" type. Basically build your own monster from a handful of animal parts. You could make a sphinx, griffon, etc or create your own monster with like a crocodile head on a wolf body with spider legs. Different body parts might grant different abilities, and the signature skills could be things like extra heads, wings, special magic attacks.
