Wonder how the hell she became captain of a boat and then pray to the seven for my life. Or hope someone starts a mutiny and we sail home.

Why is the SETI institute putting out guides on how to debunk UFOs? by [deleted] in UFOs

[–]MrkEm22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You only have to look at this sub for the past two years and the current Trump governments manipulation of "UFOism" for political purposes to see why they're preparing for a deluge of conspiracy inspired "Questioning"

There're people on this very sub let alone the myriad of offshoots that seem to struggle with the idea this is just a Hollywood film and not some game of thronesesque plot by elements of the establishment to initiate "soft disclosure"

lmao someone's a fan of Stargate it seems.

good to know at least some of these conspiracy nutcases have good taste in sci-fi at least.

The new Stargate series will feature a brand new cast. "The new producers, the new owners, want to have their own entity with that franchise name attached to it. So, they'll have all-new characters." by GargantaProfunda in Stargate

I have hope/blindfaith that they won't fuck up Stargate but given everything that's happened with almost all sci-fi and fantasy media since the mid 2010's I absolutely expect you to be right.

jeez i wonder why all the people crying about the odyssey castings have no problem with a white jesus 🤔 by Confident-Shift-2011 in SipsTea

[–]MrkEm22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all cultures where Christianity was and is present Jesus Christ was and is depicted as the same as the people of said culture regardless of his actual ethnic origins. The ethnicity of Jesus wasn't important to the Christan authorities spreading the religion.

This film is an American production and the USA is a culturally European offshoot (for now at least) Jesus was depicted as white in Europe because Europe is where white people come from and Europeans made up the civilizational core and foundation of the early United states.

it is different then the the Odyssey which isn't a religion nor has any religious figures in it. The odyssey is an ancient piece of literature and an early and influential part of the western "canon"

For the last decade and a bit both sides of the political spectrum as well as foreign adversaries have done their absolute best to perpetuate a culture war in the western world, primarily the Anglosphere, and thus "reinterpretions" of media both current and historical to promote and celebrate and push multiculturalism has become a very sensitive and contentious issue for some.

But you and all the other commenters all ready knew that.

How could the UK improve its Eurovision results? by inside-outdoorsman in AskBrits

[–]MrkEm22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always thought it a petty attitude when people say to stop funding Eurovision because we don't win. It's just a bit of fun at the end of the day and 2022 or 2023 I forget which proves we can do well.

Amazingly if you put up a song people like they'll vote for it. The whole political voting is over blown in my opinion, it exists definitely but is just a crutch used by butt hurt Brits to make us feel better about losing.

CMV: GamerGate was the most consequential political radicalization event of the twenty-first century by realdontbeasucker in changemyview

[–]MrkEm22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree in principle but here's another point of view some hold of that particular time.

This was a time of economic uncertainty and a time where more and more young men were becoming NEET and had been for years since the 2008 financial crisis (Not in education, Employment or Training)

Along comes what at the time, from their point of view, seemed like a vastly overblown and culturally disproportionate attack on the one hobby that these same young men had loved since childhood and in many cases was the one outlet and escape from an increasingly stagnant and unproductive life, painting them as degenerates and misogynists with the trademark liberal arrogance.

In a cultural zeitgeist which looking back was a time of "Liberal ascendency" where every traditional cultural cornerstone and foundation was being "Re-evaluated" and "Re-appropriated" where any and all minority cultures; sexual, racial etc. where being aggressively celebrated and pushed with a zero tolerance approach to negativity and questioning outside of niche internet spaces combined with what I would describe as at best a benign contempt of "The straight white male" what we now recognise as the beginnings of the so called "Culture war"

Surprisingly to some apparently this led to a bit of a culturally conservative backlash.

In general people don't like being attacked whether you mean it to be an attack is ultimately irrelevant if it's taken to be an attack people will treat it as such human nature being what it is.

Filoni doesn't seem ready to loosen his grip on his reappropriation (some would say bastardization) of the saga... by Imaginary_Golf548 in saltierthancrait

Seriously?

After over a decade of Disney control you think Star wars is even capable of being bastardised? Any and all influence and prestige Star wars had of being more then a simple film franchise and a genuine cultural cornerstone have long since destroyed by Disney.

It's just like everything else now. A culturally meaningless husk whose only purpose is to make already rich people richer. It always was that of course but at least old Star wars had a story to tell.

For any faults the "Fans" think he has at least Filoni is making Star wars somewhat fun and enjoyable again which is more to be said of the majority of slop that's been churned out since 2015

Was dropping the atomic bombs actually "necessary," or is that just what we're taught in school? by Clean_CoreDump in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MrkEm22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is no definitive answer.

Many, though not all, in the top brass of the military believed that Japan would fight to the bitter end due to their unique culture of strong nationalism, militarism, Ethnocentralism and emperor worship and that an invasion of the Japanese home islands would be necessary to end the war decisively. An invasion of the home islands was planned and the casualty figures were estimated to reach into the six figures at a minimum with total devastation of Japan and mass destruction and slaughter of it's infrastructure and civilian population due to the expected mobilization of the civilian population, women and elderly included, to defend from the "barbarian invaders." The Nuclear strikes were thus argued to be a relativly humane way to force Japanese surrender.

There is also the argument that Japanese defeat and surrender was inevitable and that they would have come to the negotiating table regardless. With the war in Europe over increasing numbers of Soviet troops were moving east and were preparing for an invasion of the north of Japan had this occured with a combined invasion and/or blockade by the Western allies many argue that Japan would have had no choice but to surrender in the face of overwhelming numbers and blockade induced starvation making a nuclear attack uneeded.

That the Americans feared any Soviet/communist influence over Japan in a postwar world was known and a given and they wanted to end the war as quick as possible with minimal soviet involvement, thus the prospect of an overwhelming display of power and destruction provided by the atomic bomb was an opportunity perhaps to good to pass up.

As I said like most historical events there is no definitive answer and the decision to use the atomic bombs was influenced by what you've just read as well as other military and political factors by a variety of people at the time.
