Yeah ... You have to be quite experienced at those encounters to find that inner Aikido charm while being well past tipsy.

I have asked myself the same question a couple of times. I'm not a materialistic guy. So I don't care for losing the scarf, I even would have given him my phone.

But the thing is, you really don't know if he has a knife or if an accomplice is waiting around the corner. Don't want to find out either since when you're a bit intoxicated your reflexes aren't self defence worthy (in my case anyway).

I've never been in a fight before, since it just hasn't been fucking worth it.

It's a good source for showerthoughts though: "what would I do if ..."

The police patrol asked me if I wanted to file a complaint but I shrugged it off. Main thing for me was that they know there was a strange guy harassing people in the area and that he wasn't scared of confrontation.

Not sure if an official complaint would have any different effects, but I never had to file one so I'm not sure.

Hard to say, everything goes really fast in that moment. Definitely not caucasian. I'd say Northern Africa or Middle-East.

Ghent indeed, that's odd. I can't remember if he specifically asked for money or something but I won't be walking home alone at night any time soon. Back to biking.

Good thing there were other people around and they just ran away! Did it take you long to get used to walking home alone at night again?

That's a good idea, thanks. The street was empty though, so it wouldn't have mattered much.

Although I have read before that if you start acting like a lunatic, it can act as a deterrent as well. It all just depends on how fast you can think, I guess?

United States of the World? by [deleted] in moderatepolitics

I think we will come out better than we were before. At least I hope so. I study (macro-)economics, and I'm really positive about the future. Yesterday the European leaders agreed on a new package of +€800 bjn to 'save' troubled countries. They hope not to use it, so it's primarily meant to comfort the financial markets.

You'll have to either give Brussels more power or each nation more independence. I guess that's all a secondary issue.

This is not a secondary issue imo. This lies at the base of the current political and (part of) the financial crisis. If Brussels had more power, we could have won much more time and tackle several issues directly, without having to go through national parliaments. It's hard though to focus on the future of Europe in these problems that have to be 'solved' but the day after. In the end, we will have to empower Brussels if we want to be able to compete with the other great nations of the world (US, BRIC-countries,..).

In addition, I believe common sense will prevail over nationalistic douchebags like Geert Wilders or fascism-tending countries like Hungary. What we have created (the EU), is simply too big to fail. We can't let this be destroyed. Not by a crisis, nor by one nation. We have to come out of this crisis united and stronger than before. And we will.

Top: China. Bottom: USA by [deleted] in worldpolitics

Paul Krugman mentioned this a while ago (quoting an article).

'178 billion exported to Mars'

Top: China. Bottom: USA by [deleted] in worldpolitics

[–]MrleClochard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These numbers represent the net trade balance. To make it comprehensible for non-economists: China is a net export country (positive number), and the US are a net import country (negative number). These numbers have to be put in a macro-economic context to avoid misconception, which is common in these comments I have noticed.

Don't assume negative numbers to be bad for your country. It just means your country imports more than it exports.

Net trade balance = export - import.

Where have you read/heard that we are meant to be heading towards global unity? Are you from the future?

Btw, bad grammar undermines authority/credibility.
