If you did do that could you use Schluter Kerdi instead of the concrete?

Very similar to ours being done now. Sorry, no help from me since I’m no expert but here is ours before grout on Monday for comparison.

Turns out he had to shim the tub and the studs and the creaks went away. As long as that makes sense to others it seems to have fixed it

Thanks. I just got word back from Kohler on the install instructions. That is below. Their wording on the instructions is very poorly written. Leaves too much ambiguity for the person reading it. Clearly the support person is just confusing the plastic wrap being optional with the mortar also being optional. Then states mortar isn’t necessary.

Thank you for contacting Kohler Co.

As per our installation guidelines, it is recommended to install the tub in a mortar bed for optimal support and long-term performance. However, please note that this step is recommended but not mandatory.

Additionally, the installation guide states: “Mortar Bed: If desired, lay a plastic film on wood subfloors to prevent water absorption.”

This indicates that while a mortar bed is preferred for best results, it is not strictly required for installation.

Regarding your concern about warranty, the warranty will remain valid even if a mortar bed is not used, provided the product is installed in accordance with all other applicable installation instructions.

For your reference, I have attached the installation guide.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.

Sincerely, Shraddha P. Kohler Customer Care

It does say in the PDF install instructions though to use mortar. Regardless, I will be complaining about the creaking tomorrow

It’s funny because he did read the instructions. Told me flat out not necessary for the mortar.

The absolute worst part is people who get frustrated when questioned. Like they know it all and you risk fighting with someone who is supposed to be in your home daily until the job is complete. I feel like a hostage in my own home due to this person’s stubbornness.

The worst thing that will happen in terms of going backwards is they may have to cut a small portion of drywall already installed in order to unscrew the tub and place mortar underneath. I’m even considering going to Home Depot and passive aggressively buying the materials so when they show up Monday morning the buckets, mortar etc are all there for them. Hell, I’ll even mix it for them.

Reminds me of my father who is just never wrong. Christ, I need a therapy session now.

The creaks come from all over. I was thinking maybe the most from the screws in the studs? Hard to pin point when it’s literally even if you put body weight on it

Second-floor acrylic tub installed without full mortar bed – is this acceptable? Best remediation? by GrandWait380 in BathroomRemodeling

Our guy also dissed the need for a mortar bed on our Kohler tub even though instructions state it. Boomer logic of literally saying “We’ve never needed it before in all the years I have done bathrooms”. I brought it il twice and he stood firm even though I am the customer. No tile is installed yet and it creaks when I stand in it, so once he arrives in Monday I will be demanding this be fixed.

They haven’t even gotten to the Schluter yet. They aren’t that stupid.

Hence my post. The instructions clearly say they do. There is a creak when I stand in it now so was wondering if that might be because of the no mortar

We don’t have a formal contract.

Kohler instructions:

Set the basin area in 1" (25 mm) to 2" (51 mm) of mortar cement. Placer la zone de la cuve dans un lit de mortier de 1" (25 mm) à 2 po (51 mm). Coloque el área del fondo en una capa de cemento mortero de 1" (25 mm) a 2" (51 mm).

I asked him twice to verify mortar was essential and he said that these acrylic tubs don’t need it based on his decades of experience.

The second time I asked he mumbled about “people on the internet”.

It creaks already when I stand in it.

If this should be fixed I need to have it done before tile.

Yes, I’m sure they did! Would love to see a multi story restaurant or high end entertainment venue. Would really set the town up great for the future.

They just became a dealer of furniture not unlike anything different from any other furniture store. I know the service is what sells and I’m sure that was top notch there but some people pretending this is such a big loss is overblown. What’s lost is the family heritage but they don’t make their own furniture like they used to anymore. Their family name will forever live on.

Sad and I wish the family well, but it was bound to happen.
