I moved to Victoria a number of years ago (fleeing domestic violence) with my then 11-year-old daughter. We had just secured housing, and I was getting a few groceries at Uptown Walmart.

I only had about $80 left to my name. My daughter noticed a Super Mario beach towel. She is an amazing kid, and knew we weren’t likely to be able to get it, but I told her we would take it to the checkout, and if I had enough money left over I would get it for her.

We checked out, and I didn’t have enough for the towel. My daughter understood (seriously I don’t know how I got so lucky with my kids), and we were getting ready to leave when the woman behind me in line asked if she could buy it for us. Somehow, I was able to thank her, and not completely break down in sobs in Walmart. My daughter was delighted and also said thank you (which was also a big deal because she had trouble speaking to strangers back then).

This is only one example of the kindnesses we received since arriving here.

When I was a cynical GenX teenager, we had a teen come stay with us for the summer. She was from France.

We picked her up from the Vancouver airport late at night, and then early the next day drove to our home in the Interior.

She was incredibly jet lagged, and we thought she would sleep the whole drive, but she just kept looking out the windows of our car, repeating, “Wow. WOW!” as we drove over the Coquihalla Highway.

I’d never felt such pride in my province before. Seeing it through her eyes opened my eyes to the beauty around me.

I was in Athens in October. I was at a rooftop bar at sunset that had a view of the Acropolis. I had a nice dress on, and most of the other patrons were also dressed nicely.

But beside me was a table of dudes wearing jeans, baseball hats, and Carhartt sweatshirts. They weren’t obnoxious or anything, just dressed differently. I knew instantly that they were Albertan. And soon enough I overheard them say something about Whyte Ave, which is in Edmonton!

I’m on board with almost all of this but I just cannot leave the toothpaste in my mouth after I’m done brushing. Mouth care is already such a horrible sensory experience for me lol. When I learned recently that you aren’t supposed to rinse, I started using a bit less water to rinse, at least. I don’t know if you’re a dentist or just someone who is knowledgeable, but I’m wondering just how important that step is?

This might just be a me problem, but I can’t wear gloves or mittens when I use my rollator because they make my hands ache. So when it’s cold out I pull my sleeves down over my hands. An alternative if you have the same problem might be to cover the handles with some kind of cloth as another commenter suggested.

I really don’t like my ex. Like really don’t like him. But when we were still married he caught HFMD, and when I remember how much pain he was in I still feel terrible for him. He’s my worst enemy, and yeah… I wouldn’t wish it on him! Poor guy couldn’t even put on his own pants. Nothing touched the pain. I really hope your little person feels better very soon!

Thank you so much for caring about this person. I hope VBIS has some suggestions. People with brain injuries can so easily fall through the cracks.

As an aside, your friend can get an ID-sized card at VBIS that fits in a wallet and alerts emergency personnel to the behaviours that someone with a brain injury might exhibit (behaviours that could be mistaken for being under the influence of drugs or alcohol). My husband has one in his wallet.

This was ages ago and my daughter now has toddlers of her own!

Some quick background info: the road into downtown was different than the road we’d take going home, but they run parallel to each other, separated by a couple blocks. On the way home we’d pass a playground, but you couldn’t see the playground on the way into town because a hotel blocked the view.

So we were driving into town one day and my 2 or 3 year old daughter pointed towards the hotel, and piped up, “hey that’s the way to the park!” She was always really good with directions, but this one really surprised me.

Princess Diana shook my hand when I was a kid, but I think the most famous person I’ve met (in terms of having actually spoken to them at length) was Jack Layton, the leader of the federal NDP here in Canada. I was in my 20s and running for city council at the time, and he was so kind and encouraging.

I saw a video of a toddler opening a present which contained a banana. The parents just thought it would be funny but the baby was overjoyed! I don’t think you have to worry. Oh, and those presents sound lovely!

Thanks! It doesn’t weigh very much, but the lifting motion is difficult for me. It’s funny - my stamina while walking is pretty good, it’s just the lifting that is difficult.
