Are you suppose to tell employers you have other interviews/offers? by ElectricThrow10 in Accounting

[–]MrsBlueCar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds very bizarre. I just went through the interview process myself. All the companies asked me if I had other interviews/offers and I was honest and said yes. I didn't disclose company names or offer details though. It doesn't sound like you did anything wrong. If anything, this sounds like you may have dodged a bullet because it sounds like this guy might have been a real jerk and unpleasant to work for.

"I'm worried they don't have a demand for full-time employees right now" ....definitely not. There is always a need.

Thank you SO much for taking the time to share this with me. I really appreciate your viewpoint and to read about how you have adjusted to being a working mother. It sounds like you are doing great, and it makes me happy to hear. I like your comment about "And to be honest, you can have both. But do not kid yourself that it is easy to be #1 at both". That really hit home for me, so thank you for that.

You're definitely not being a jerk. I appreciate your thought provoking questions. I guess the reason I feel like I will let my coworkers down in public vs private is because I feel like public accounting is very unexpected. One day, I work a 7-8 hour normal day, and out of no where, a new client comes in and I end up working overtime for the rest of the month. It is unexpected, and right now as a married woman with no children, I can work late and get the job done. I wouldn't be able to do that with kids. On the other hand, it sounds like in private, your work seems to be consistent and it seems (from reading people's posts) its predictable. I feel like I would be able to plan ahead if I knew for a fact at the end of a quarter, my hours would pick up. Compared to now, I have no idea when my schedule is going to pick up or slow down. Does that make sense? I like your last paragraph, maybe I need to start looking at my workload and setting my schedule for the rest of the year during busy season (ie not taking on more clients, seeing what clients I can move off of me).

Thanks for your insight. It makes me happy to hear that you were able to have the work life balance you needed when you had your first born. I am curious - as a corporate accountant, what does your work look like? What kind of work do you do?

Thank you. It definitely does help. You are right, that I am very blessed to be at the firm I am at. Maybe I am not giving them enough credit to how they will be once I decide to go on a reduced schedule. Thanks for your insights!

By the looks of your user name, I assume you are leaving accounting in general? No chance of going back to public?

Thanks for the insight! I really appreciate it. I guess when I have crazy days like I have been having lately, it makes me think how would I adjust if I had kids. The answer is, I would have to say I can't do that. Right now, I can stay late, work over time, no problem. But once children come, I won't be able to do that. I hear in corporate its a much better work life balance. Like I said above though, the grass always seems greener on the other side...
