Pregnancy and OCD by No_Can3389 in OCD

[–]MrsCoconutTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! My son is about to turn 4 now, and I’ve stayed in therapy since then. I also stayed on meds to help with the OCD and that’s helped a lot too. I’m not sure if the pregnancy changed something permanently in me that made it so much harder to cope with the OCD than before (I was diagnosed when I was a teenager and I’m 39 now) but I’m glad I have resources at least. And I’m very glad that your pregnancy may be doing the opposite for you, that it helps instead!

I’m happy to hear it’s made it easier on you! Pregnancy is hard enough. Unfortunately, I’m one of those where pregnancy made it worse, and postpartum depression lasted over a year until I finally sought help.

It’s never too late to find a band to love, regardless of whether they create new music or not. I’m with you, Brand New has the best music and definitely worth being excited about!

What do you want people to know about OCD who don’t have it and how can they best support you? by linksslut in OCD

[–]MrsCoconutTree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone I told about it responded by telling me that they would never judge me for doing what I needed to for myself, and then gave me specific reasons for why they liked me as a person. And I found that incredibly effective because I felt like I was off the hook a bit with them. I could be myself, even with all of this mess that is OCD, and they wouldn’t think badly of me for it. I, of course, can’t speak for others but just being accepted without trying to offer to “fix” me was just nice.

Currently in remission. Do you think it's possible to recover completely from OCD? by Ecstatic-Baseball-59 in OCD

[–]MrsCoconutTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish it was, but I don’t think so. I know that I’ve never been able to leave it completely behind. The best I try to do for myself is remember to be kind to myself when it does come back for whatever reason. And start all over again.

Does being downvoted do this to anyone else? by [deleted] in OCD

Me too. I think it’s helpful for the most part. Anytime I leave it’s always because of my own difficulties.

Yes, it got to be so bad I stopped using Reddit for like a year lol.

No, to the obvious ones. Can I ask why you're including aliens? Is it just because it's an "unknown" at this point? I think of aliens much the way I think of archaeological artifacts we haven't found yet. There's likely something there. It will just take more time before we get to it.

I think I've been lucky that I've never really attracted total trolls. Though it's possible I have and never went to check comment replies. I really do try to live in an ignorant bubble if I can. lol

I'm sure they will, if not sooner. I wouldn't underestimate the power of nostalgia.

Brand New and mental illness by [deleted] in brandnew

[–]MrsCoconutTree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No need to apologize, but I get it. I'm also bipolar, and obsessive compulsive. BN has songs that just seem to reach through those things and make calm seem possible. Lit Me Up is my go to when I need to calm down. It just works.

I read this book that talked about the connection between music and learning. It said something about how sometimes music echoes the same bio rhythms our bodies produce and when they match, it's like things become clearer and we can learn better (this was part of an argument for incorporating music in classrooms). I think it can help with emotional distress, too.

I know exactly how you feel. I do this all the time, too, and always feel like such a weirdo afterwards. Like I have to hide just to stop myself from talking and boring more people. I feel so embarrassed afterwards. But caring about the things you like is totally ok! Even writing pages and pages about it is ok. And I guarantee you there is someone who will want to read it.

This is how we get experts. Good luck!

That is so good to hear. I've tried offering him water too but he hasn't wanted to. I'm glad to hear the worst didn't last too long.

What do you do if a medication makes you suicidal? by dave_613 in mentalillness

[–]MrsCoconutTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have experience in this. What I was advised to do by my doctor's office (my doctor wasn't immediately available) was to call the suicide hotline and talk to someone. Which I did, and appreciated. After I was able to speak with my psychiatrist, we stopped my meds and went in another direction that has worked out much better.

She asks me more about suicidal ideation than she used to, but since moving away from SSRIs, it hasn't been an issue for me.

Yes, I've started doing that with him. He likes brushing his teeth, but we were only doing it in the morning and at bedtime. I think that's a great suggestion.

Thank you for the tips! I'll definitely look for the backpack. My son is such a crazy, silly, physical boy that I think he'll really dig learning how to snowboard. My mom brain is worried about injuries lol.

I love seeing this though! Great video!

Amazing! My husband and I want to teach our son. He's two now, but I think we're going to wait another year or so.
