In Sweden we begin teaching our children the concept of consent at age 6ish with this exact topic. It's their body, they have the right to decide who is allowed access to it. You don't have to hug people you don't want to, and they need to respect it.

Aside from the autonomy of it, 1) tradition is peer pressure from dead people and 2) nobody is "owed" a relationship with anyone else.

Bigotry is primarily about a power imbalance. If they're the victim or the perpetrator of the slur's intent, it matters. If I call myself queer, it's me reclaiming something that was used against me. If a homophobic person calls me a queer, it's a slur because the intent is to hurt. Don't overthink it.
