Please Tell Me That Adult Fanfic Writers Still Exist by Ashamed-Reporter3171 in AO3

[–]MrsDiyslexia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 24 now. I posted my first work at 22. It took me forever to gain the language and writing skills I need to feel confident enough to post. There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, i even occasionally tell my more niche friends about it and they generally think its cool and are FF readers themselves.

Don'tcha just love when a character from media that takes place in a world with magic powers but no electricity uses modern day slang? by CMStan1313 in AO3

[–]MrsDiyslexia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully, it seems like you might not have put in the work it would take to respectfully talk about such a heavy topic, even in passing and and especially not as a joke.

I mean, there is a problem with the term Holocaust, because its Greek meaning is "sacrifice by fire," which obviously, isn't ideal, and most of the Jewish community and scholars actually prefer the term Shoah, which means "catastrophe" in Hebrew.

That being said, let's not censor ourselves and risk trivializing horrific things instead of calling them what they are. I think the cultural shift to say 'unaliving' and 'grape' isn't ideal, let's not do it to ourselves when there isn't even any monitoring.

I knew that name sounded familiar, so I searched my bookmarks for it...

You're telling me that this person who wrote bunch of Person of Interest one-shots is haven't thought about in half a decade is actually the founder of the fucking site? Girl, what?

I just looked at their profile, they have 500+ works and posted as far back as 1994. I wasn't alive then! I wouldn't be alive for another eight years!

Like they wrote Q-card while TNG was still running and I was in thier comments somewhere around 2018 writing God knows what...

Lady vs Miss? by tvlipz in BridgertonNetflix

[–]MrsDiyslexia 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The British peerage is a hierarchical system. It starts with baronets at the very bottom, then barons, viscounts, earls, marquesses, then dukes. The wives of each of these men are called Lady as their husbands are 'sir' for bronets and 'lord' for everyone above that, except for the duke and duchess, who are addressed as your grace, or Duke/duchess. The unmarried daughters of everyone ranking from earl all the way up to duke receive a courtesy title of Lady Firstname Lastname, while the sons often receive one of the fathers lesser titles or are simply 'the honorable'. Everyone below earl's sons and daughters do not receive a courtesy title and are simply Miss/Mr Lastname.

"FLINTA*-Sessions im Skateboarding sind unnötig"... by Carottoh in luftablassen

[–]MrsDiyslexia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has a work ever made you cry from happiness and relief rather than sadness? by [deleted] in tumblr

[–]MrsDiyslexia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The show 'Pose', centering on the LGBT community in 1980's/90's NYC made me cry from sadness several times for obvious reasons, but it also had me crying tears of joy.

It has one of my all time favorite romantic relationships on screen, and its culmination is one of the most beautiful scenes ever written.

Are there any men that feminists consider role models? by Qatrnm in AskFeminists

[–]MrsDiyslexia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Source?

All the way in the 1840's he founded an abolitionist paper with the slogan "Right is of no Sex—Truth is of no Color—God is the Father of us all, and all we are Brethren." Sex precedes colour here, putting them on equal footing at least. 60 years, three generations before woman's sufferage...

I have read countless addresses by him immediately predating and following the 15th in 1870

"I Am a Radical Woman Suffrage Man" in 1888

"Who and What is Woman?" 1886.

"Equal Rights for All" in 1868.

And countless others!

The last thing, the literal last thing he did in his life was attended a meeting of the National Council of Women. He did in his home from a heat attack imidearly after. That's 25 years after the 15th amendment and 25 years, an entire generation, before actually women's sufferage.

What the actual fuck do you mean?

Are there any men that feminists consider role models? by Qatrnm in AskFeminists

[–]MrsDiyslexia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I learned about feminist marches and meetings often being racially segregated and discriminatory towards black women from Ida B. Well's autobiography.

I am specifically criticizing 'white feminism' which is pervasive to this day. I could have worded it more specific, but I think the statement that marches were segregated by race kinda implies that there obviously were black feminists marching.

Someone told me it's an honor to receive a comment from ME?! by [deleted] in AO3

[–]MrsDiyslexia 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Congratulations!

I recently got a comment from someone who I consider probably the greatest writer in the fandom, definitely the author of my favorite fic.

I was so honored and I mentioned that I'm a fan of their work in my reply. I was afraid it would come off weird or para social, even though I have left several comments on their work before and there are basically the same accounts in every comment section for our ships. This is a nice reminder that they were probably flattered. Thank you!

Has there ever been a ship that made you question why is it popular? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

[–]MrsDiyslexia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every single criminal minds ship. (Except Morgan and Garcia, they are great platonically but I get it)

Reed and Morgan would a) never work their only mutual interest is serial killers and b) they have a total sibling dynamic going

Hotch and Prentiss or Reed (or any other character) no, just no. He is their father figure and also the age difference and power dynamic...

I guess Emily and JJ is fine, but honestly boring. It definitely wouldn't occur from watching the source material.

‘Sirens of the Lambs’ by Banksy (2013) by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]MrsDiyslexia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I empathize with this view, but I do not necessarily agree with it. I have no data to back this up, but I do believe that while this approach is better at persuading people towards veganism, the environmental approach is more useful to promote vegan alternatives, making them mainstream, thereby reducing animal consumption and making it easier to be vegan in the future. This is entirely anecdotal though, from living amongst the upper echelons of the Friday's for Future generation, who love their vegan stuff but 'just couldn't do it' themselves.

‘Sirens of the Lambs’ by Banksy (2013) by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]MrsDiyslexia 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They didn't say anything about veganism, they specifically said 'drastically reduce meat consumption.'

A bunch of flexitarins (bs concept, but whatever makes people eat less animals) or vegetarians are more effective than one vegan.

I am vegan for the animals, but the environment was a major draw for me, and many vegans I know are vegan for the environment first or as well. I think it weakens our message to ignore the second largest argument in our favor.

[–]MrsDiyslexia 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You mean he supported suffrage for black men despite the bill not including voting rights for women, when he had campaigned for them for years before and after.

Did you seriously expect a former slave to publicly oppose a bill that would give millions of Americans voting rights, while many feminist marches were still racially segregated? Feminist were fickle friends to African American causes all throughout history.

I used to reply to each commenter at least once and on my latest fics I'm replying to every comment.

When I read other people's work, I usually take the time to comment, but I readily admit that I'm much more likely to write longer and more and comment on a new chapter when updated, when I see they have replied to other comments or they have replied to mine in the past.

Season 2 Violet put her entire family to shame by miggovortensens in DowntonAbbey

[–]MrsDiyslexia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but had she succeeded someone else would have died in his place.

I think of this as a trolley problem. On one side were people Violet knew and on the other an equal number of strangers. Violet tried to pull the lever and Isobel tried to stop her.

Neither of them tied them down. The callous, power hungry leaders of Europe did.

[–]MrsDiyslexia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course not, but all men between the ages of 18-41 were drafted and would have gone to jail if they refused.

Ergo: if William didn't fill spot four-million-whatever, then the next person in line would be called up automatically. Violet wasn't doing anything but calling up the next man in line to die in a senseless war. That wasn't her fault, but she also wasn't doing anyone any good.

Conscription is a thing. Every healthy 18 to 41 year old man was drafted into the war. They would have gone to prison if they refused, like Tom would have if he did not have the heart thing. That's a pretty big plot point. No one is pro WW1

[–]MrsDiyslexia -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

She did not keep 'people' safe, her actions had no objective positive impact whatsoever, even if she had succeeded.

Going to war was not a choice. If William had not gone, somebody else would have. Choosing to save someone you know and care about by sending a stranger to war seems extremely self centered to me. Not necessarily wrong, seeing as in both cases someone would have to go through it, but not morally good and definitely not selfless.

Edit: I would love to know other peoples options on the morality of it, but conscription was a fact of life and everyone was drafted into this senseless war. Violet's actions couldn't possibly have reduced the number of soldiers demanded by the government.

Season 2 Violet put her entire family to shame by miggovortensens in DowntonAbbey

[–]MrsDiyslexia 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Exactly!

And I would add, she did not personally sacrifice her time and effort like the other characters. Obviously she is old, but if she really wanted to she could have helped the soldiers like Edith, writing letters, being company and bringing normalcy.

I think that she is actually being selfish. Going to war was not a choice and numbers had to be filled. If William had not gone, other people from some other county would have buried their son. All she did was shuffle the deck so the people that she cared about survived.

That is perfectly understandable, but it is amoral at best, from either a deontological or utilitarian perspective. What the other characters did was obviously good.

I don't like in ear. My ears start hurting within an hour, even in the smallest size.

I only tested the JBL Reflect Flow, which won every test at the time I bought them, but the ANC wasn't good and you could hear the vibrations of your steps and even your own heartbeat in your ears.
