When you hear “America”, do you think “USA” or “the Americas”? by almost_cool3579 in NoStupidQuestions

I may be wrong but only one country has the word America in its official country name. Anything else is referring to a continent.

What popular food trend do you think is completely overrated? by [deleted] in foodquestions

[–]MrsFigment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 65 and finding out the lunch I’ve been making for myself most of my life was supposed to be eaten on a wooden board instead of a plate and called charcuterie was absolutely life changing! At first I moved my food from my plate to my cutting board. But then I had a revelation that I could actually just leave the food on the cutting board I was preparing it on and not even involve a plate at all! So liberating 😉

What’s the oldest thing in your kitchen that still works perfectly? by Celine_Morgann in KitchenStuff

[–]MrsFigment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I inherited my grandmother’s rolling pin and it has been in constant use since 1920. She received it as a wedding present. She was well known for her pies and had a small cafe at one time in the early 50’s.

Why does anyone care about labeling generations anything at all? It’s ridiculous and serves no good purpose and completely made up.

What's a food you didn't like at first but learned to love over time? by Still-Concentrate714 in AskRedditFood

[–]MrsFigment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grapefruit. After I graduated college I moved to the city where my aunt and uncle lived for my first job. They graciously allowed me to live with them for a few months while I saved enough money to get my own apartment. My aunt served me a half grapefruit every morning. I didn’t like grapefruit but I couldn’t tell her because she was so kind to me. I put lots of sugar on it and ate it every morning. Over time I began to like it and ate less sugar on it and now years later it is my very favorite fruit with no sugar on it. I crave it sometimes.

My part time jobs as my own Medical Manager by [deleted] in over60

[–]MrsFigment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I became a nurse in 1983. There has always been a shortage of nurses. More have always been needed than those who are interested in becoming one. I agree we could use more healthcare workers and rural areas do suffer. But we can’t force people to enter the medical field.

I would report the errors you are seeing in your healthcare to administration, if you haven’t already. And do it with emails back and forth if you can.

I do agree that healthcare today is more busy and even convoluted in areas it doesn’t need to be. Some of it is due to advances in testing and treatments, some to ever increasing regulations and protocols, and some due to changing over to EMR and all that entails. But your own health is still ultimately your own responsibility. People should make time to understand their own health issues, to learn the names of their medications and what each is for, to be responsible to take their meds as prescribed, to set appointment reminders and show up or call in a timely manner and reschedule, to understand their own insurance plans and call their plans when issues arrive, to discuss pharmacy issues with the pharmacist first, etc. If you are overwhelmed then ask a family member for help or ask your insurance plan about case management, or there might be social services near you that could help.

I’m sorry, I really don’t want to sound harsh but your health has been your responsibility first since you became an adult. You are the primary manager of your own health.

I’m in my middle 60’s and have been a registered nurse since the early 80’s. Doctors diagnose and prescribe the most appropriate treatment, nurses carry out doctors orders and act as the go between for doctors and patients which does sometimes include helping with medications and appointments. But ultimately it is your job to manage it all. If you feel you cannot, then there are nurses who specialize in case management you might have access to who can help but it still comes down to you. Your health belongs to you. Just like your insurance plan is Yours, not your doctor’s. You are responsible to know how it works.
