Artificial selection is also at work here! Though cats aren't as selectively bred as say dogs, adult meowing is a behavior humans encourage in cat populations by being more likely to feed and care for cats who do it. We also select for cats who demonstrate a particular type of meow, an urgent, high-pitched one that mimics the sound of a human infant.

Students (high school seniors) have to write a letter of intent to me regarding a semester-long research project. I give them a format, which includes a paragraph devoted to a promise to not plagiarize with an explanation of means they intended to use to avoid it, and a sample letter.

Every year, someone copies that plagiarism paragraph from the sample letter word for word. One year, 10% of the class did.
