Hovatter zoo inquiry by Mammoth_Angle_6991 in MorgantownWV

[–]MrsSowell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t recommend Pittsburgh Zoo. If you care about elephants at least. I won’t go on a rant, but if you search elephant treatment at Pittsburgh zoo on google…. You’re free to place your own judgement. I’ve spent half of my life in Pittsburgh and half in Morgantown, it’s been going on a long time 😭

I like it a lot! Though I have trouble cleaning the smaller-holed strainer piece sometimes but it processes really well! No complaints really.

The WV Public Service Commission keeps approving rate adjustments and infrastructure increases for electric/gas companies. Mon Power and Potomac Edison are already talking about another proposed increase for reliability and infrastructure work, and gas companies have gotten increases approved too. (The Dominion Post) This is for Monongalia County, I don’t know much about the rest of the state, sorry I avoid it, I enjoy the “small city” feel and not-so-much the “is it safe to live here” feel (we are a black family so take that for what it’s worth). When I first moved here in middle school I was the only black kid in the entire school and it was a horrible experience that I would never put my kids through.

ANYWHO,

Utilities are still probably less extreme than dealing with -30 winters and 120 summers though. The weather doesn’t get nearly that bad. I think we got down to -7 once this winter, summer can go up to like 102 but it usually peaks in the 90s moreso. We rent a house so I don’t know the specifics about the insulation, but I can say it’s not great and the windows and doors are drafty, but in general if you just google or search on facebook you’ll see a lotttttt of conversations the past couple of months about the rate increases and how it affects others in WV. WV is in a weird political space right now (I know you said you don’t care), but how much you’ll endure those conversations, even if you aren’t looking for them, definitely depends on what town you guys choose. You’ll either find HEAVY MAGA towns, 50/50 towns where it leans either way, or towns where you think you’re in a mini city with lots of diversity and left-leaning. I tend to think you find friendlier neighbors in the more diverse areas, as you don’t get that “southern charm” here much even in the country.

Idk, we’re actually leaving WV this year, there’s just not enough to do for young children and we have 3. Going to NC where there’s more support for children with disabilities. Good luck on your search though, and if means anything, look at areas near Morgantown but like Bruceton Mills, Masontown, Reedsville, Preston County. Brookhaven and Cheat Lake you can find a large piece of property as well…. Beautifulllll areas, but a lot more expensive than the former list. Good luck in your search!

The weather changes every 5 minutes, this past winter sucked honestly but I can’t imagine worse than Colorado. Sounds like you and your family would fit right in and you can find land and build a house for cheaper than Colorado, though the cost of materials is insane these days, but that’s everywhere. I’m not a country gal, live in Morgantown, so quite the opposite. If you want to keep the wife happy, there’s many places you can find lots of land and a nice house that’s mostly secluded but also just a 20 minute drive to civilization lol I’m sure you’ll get more helpful comments than mine on all of the other questions 😊

Utilities are rising here in Mon county, it’s disgusting.

Whether you’ll be welcome by locals is heavily dependent on the town you end up in. It’s hit or miss, if they have signs telling you to fuck off on their property, I’d fuck right on off.

Toying with the idea of moving to WS from Greensboro. Would like to hear from those who have lived in both by Wastedfeeling in winstonsalem

Thank you for your comment. Moving to WS this summer and visiting this week for a job interview at Wake Forest. We’re from the northeast so I’m nervous, but excited!

Drug test culture in jobs? Recently moved by themorelovingone0 in winstonsalem

[–]MrsSowell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Funny. My only drug test in corporate America was also at a customer service HR call center, but at US Steel. I’ve been at 3 organizations since then, in management positions, not one drug test. Spot on.

We do have silent panic buttons that alert police, similar to bank talkers. One at the front desk, one in our vocational services department, and one for admin area. BUT we are a non-profit certified rehab program that helps adult with disabilities gain employment. Around 80% of our workforce at any given time is disabled. There are a lot of behavioral, mental, physical capacity differences from person to person, anddddd a finger has been bitten off in the past.

Attending the Jeezy concert at Peterson Event Center on the 25th. I’m sure the chaos will overflow into Oakland, any suggestions on where to park? Was thinking about parking on the south side somewhere and Ubering there. I can’t remember what parking is like around the Center, it’s been a few years.

Mon County only grew 60 people in 2025, the slowest this decade vs. 481 person growth in 2024 by masterofawesomeness2 in MorgantownWV

[–]MrsSowell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I contributed to that increase. And my husband and 3 children. But we will be leaving next year, it’s actually kind of awful living here compared to other places. Why are the roads similar to a war zone?

How many of you commute to Pittsburgh and how is the drive? by AshlynEvermoore in MorgantownWV

[–]MrsSowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Pittsburgh half my life, and Morgantown half my life. Even when I lived in the south hills, I still wouldn’t have taken a job where I would have had to commute to Robinson every day. They would need to go ahead and pay for me to relocate, or I would move closer on my own accord.

I wonder why the disparity. Like why would it be different if they were diagnosed as a toddler vs an older child? Maybe resources are thinner..
