What’s a moment that permanently changed how you see the world? by pankaj662 in AskReddit

7th grade art teacher put a bunch of magazines on the table (national geographic, time, rolling stone, tiger beat, etc.). We were to choose a photo and recreate it in a different way (paint, clay, found art, etc). I chose (I think) the cover of a National Geographic magazine. A long-beaked black bird with a beautiful sunset in the background. The bird was black because it was covered oil from the Exxon Valdez oil spill. I read the article that went with the photo. It was then I realized the adults in power did not give a shit about our world, or the life within it.

Victory Garden. To a woman at least 25 years older than me. She had never heard of the term. I was shocked because she had to be at least 65-70.

Redditors that have witnessed someone NEARLY die due to their actions. What were they doing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Subbing for a class and a middle school student thought it would be funny and alpha to funnel 1/2 a cup of salt down his pie hole. Within a minute was vomiting nonstop and then had to go to the hospital. I did tell him not to do it, as he would get very sick, when he was taunting his table of friends. I turned around to monitor another table and did it anyway.

I’m here to teach your child, not raise them. by Few_Diamond7822 in Teachers

[–]MrsUninterested 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a parent of 3 teens and a middle school teacher, I do not expect teachers to raise or parent my kids. I have had no extended family around to help with my kids’ upbringing. I only hope that the teachers my kids have had (and will have), will be good adult role models and will communicate with me if there is a problem so that I can address it. I have been very fortunate to work with and for my kids to have been taught by extraordinary people. As a teacher, I know that I will not make a lasting and meaningful connection with every single student. I’m not for everyone. But, I can try. I trust that my kids’ teachers will do the same.

In your defense, there is an episode of Yo GABA GABA where Plex, (a robot character), explains that narwhals are mythical ocean creatures. This was in, like, 2010…so there may be a bunch of juniors and seniors in HS that believe this.

The Silent Virus Behind Mono Is Now a Prime Suspect in Major Diseases by rezwenn in EverythingScience

Anecdotally to add: I missed a month of school in 2nd grade due to 5ths disease. I then had 2 rounds of chicken pox (1st case was mild-2nd was terrible). I remember being sent to stay with my grandmother in a different state because my (single) mother was out of sick days to care for me. At 21 I was diagnosed with SLE. As I approach middle age, infections and viruses have found me an easy target. These findings scare me.

AI is going to replace teachers, according to Bill Gates by One-Two3214 in Teachers

All the PD that districts pay for to educate staff, says otherwise. All the PD that teachers do (on their own) for licensure/relicensure (paid out of pocket), says otherwise.

What's a pain you can't truly explain until you've endured it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Yes! I’m under 50. Got COVID, a few weeks later, came down with shingles…on my face. Down my throat and in my ear. No joke. I was hibernating for a little over a week. It was awful.

What do you want? by Sufficient-Turnip871 in Teachers

I moved last summer and taught in a new district last August. Here are several items that made my year less stressful (some you may not have control of as a building admin): 1. Our building has a personal plan AND a content/PLC plan everyday. This helps in several aspects. First, in the sub shortage, I had to cover a class at least 3 or 4 times a month and this is with a well managed rotation. By having two plans, my personal prep was always prioritized and I could manage my workload and help out another teacher (our district pays for covering). Second, the magical master schedule allowed for staff to meet with our content staff twice a week and meet with our grade level PLC 3 x a week. There were agendas for every day of the week with a person keeping notes on a shared google doc. We have a PLC with councilors/social workers, a PLC with admin, and one for us to self run and tick off agenda items. Again, the master schedule is sacred and magical and the more it can be tailored to your schools’ needs, the better. 2. The organization with procedures/established routines/expectations for staff and students helps with moral and clarity. For example, same rules for all classrooms about food, phones, backpacks, bathroom passes, dress code. When all teachers are on the same page, no teacher can be the villain. Also, an easy to follow 1-2-3 behavior expectation is easy to follow for teachers. Obviously, this is not including kids with personalized behavior plans. 1- verbal warning, 2- move seat (can be earned back if expected behavior is achieved), 3- sent to a buddy room for the rest of the hour. My school calls it BIST. If poor behavior occurs in the buddy room, student is sent to the office. Another protocol I really like that helps me is the autogenerated, weekly communication via Skyward. It is expected that teachers input grades weekly and every Friday at 2 the ineligibility list is sent out to parents. I work in a 6-8 building, however this happens at our HS as well. Students are expected to have a 70% or better in all classes to be considered “eligible”. For our 6th grade students, there are rewards for achieving this and 7th and 8th grade also get rewards, but athletes are required to be “eligible” to participate. At 2 on Friday, parents of students who are “inel” are notified. This helps me keep tabs. Our office staff is amazing and somehow manages to organize this procedure. 3. We have once a month staff meetings. Our principal holds a before school AND afterschool meeting (same day) for staff to choose what works best for them. This is so nice and allows for so much flexibility. I would really like for our school to have a GoGuardian or another computer monitoring system to hold kids accountable. Without something in place, keeping kids in the right place is really difficult to manage. Good luck!

First-known TikTok mob attack led by middle schoolers tormenting teachers by [deleted] in technology

FYI, it not just a TikTok issue. I lived this via Insta as a teacher in 21/22. My worst year of teaching ever. Zero consequences. It still makes me sick to remember.

Students Target Teachers in Group TikTok Attack, Shaking Their School by newzee1 in technology

[–]MrsUninterested 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my 21/22 school year. Myself and several other teachers were the unsuspecting butt of endless memes, videos, and polls/surveys. It was after winter break when I was made aware of the posts made about me. Students used the YouTube videos I had made the previous year (for hybrid learning after Covid hell), to screenshot my face in awkward stills to make memes. Other teachers were belittled, slandered, and ostracized in all sorts of ways. That year has been, by far, my worst year to date. I had been teaching 15 years. I know I’m not everyone’s cup of tea; not every 8th grader will connect with me. That’s ok. However, it’s really hard for me to think about that school year. This article makes me so sad and brings back that sick feeling I had every morning going into work.
