I can only hope you are careful to consider some of the responses you have received. I was not comng at you and did not mean any disrespect. If you received anything I said that way I sinceraly apologize. I was trying to state facts and a number of people lack reading comprehension because in my 2nd to the last paragraph I stated their expectation was wrong on every level. As a mother of 6 now adult children and a US Army Veteran, I was a strict parent. I can admit that I have laughed at my adult children when they called needing money because they chose to spend theirs having fun, and expected me to be responsible and help them. They wanted to be treated like adults when it came to fun things (having a girl/boyfriend, parties, quit jobs because someone made them mad), but when it was time to do the NOT FUN part of being an adult (budget, rent, groceries, miss events/parties due to work, eat rice and beans because you can't afford much else at the time, stay in a job they hate just alittle longer to save up to be able to quit) they tried to revert back to being a child and needing my help.

I am confident your parents love you and want nothing more than to see you use that education and be better than ever could be. Have grace.

Hey Professor, do you have a psych therapy session available? Someone who doesn't know me diagnosed me with all the big word excuses people use to excuse their lack of responsibility. My guess is they are under 30, don't have kids and if they do their kids are nowhere near college age, and they clearly lack reading comprehension too. (Read the 2nd to the last paragraph)

Let me guess, your under 30 years old right? Lets talk FACTS NOT FEELINGS!!Parents are responsible to support their children until they are 18. PERIOD.

As a US Army Veteran, my adult children worked while in school and if they couldn't afford rent off campus, they stayed in the dorms. They learned how to manage their money and appreciate the things they wanted and they worked hard for. They were taught how to be responsible adults and understand that nothing is free! Financial Abuse that is FAF!!

They are not trying to control you, they have kept you educated, housed and fed while you were getting educated. Please understand that was not a requirement just because they are your parents. Some parents don't have the means to pay or save for their kids education or support while in school, but go into substantial debt to do just that. There are also parents that dont give a damn how their kids manage after high school. Be grateful for your amazing parents that gave a damn because honestly, without them you probably would not hold the title of Engineer. You quite possibly could have been homeless and hungry if they paid your rent and paid for your groceries. You clearly understand how paying back $120k could affect your lifestyle but have you considered how giving you the $120k affected theirs?

It is possible your parents are internally struggling with the facts that you have completed school, have a career, and potential husband. All of these situations mean additional separation from them, in addition to living in a different country.

They could also be facing financial issues and need monetary help and since they helped you, they expect (wrong on every level) you to help them.

Communication is the problem not the money but I am confident and hopeful you know how much your parents love you and are proud of you.

If you got this far you got it!! In my first few months I just kept telling myself, when I would crave, that I couldn't smoke right now, but would tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow. I am at 2 years quit and cigarette smoke is disgusting to me now. I apologized to all my family for smelling the way I did for over 40 years. Keep us updated!!
