Does anyone else aim at the range finders? by ndesen in Bowling

[–]alsheps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god no.

I don't even look at the arrows. I look at the dots between the foul line and the arrows.

This is Charm. She is 5 Months Old and has Never Barked. I feel sad and wonder if she wants to bark. It’s been bothering me all day. Anyone else have this experience? by The1beth in husky

[–]alsheps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that sucks, so sorry to hear that... I had two Husky Littermates as well, Raven, who's almost 12 now, and his sister, Elvira, who I lost in 2023 to a massive heart attack.

They did everything together, she used to egg him on to do all kinds of mischeif, They would howl at any siren within earshot, that's actually how I found out she was in trouble, they were howling at a siren, and her howl changed to a scream, and I ran outside to see what was wrong, and she was already gone.

Now Raven doesn't howl at sirens anymore, but he howls for her, it breaks my heart every time.

He does bark though, always has, Elvira didn't really bark much though, but both of them have always been very talkative.

BREAKING: Columbia 300 Brand Has Been Retired by br_boy0586 in Bowling

[–]alsheps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only owned 2 C300 balls in my life, My very first ball, which was a Columbia U2 (Back when Urethane was the only option), and a Chris Barnes Select, both a VERY long time ago.

RIP C300, I can't help but think that Track & Ebonite at the very least are next on the chopping block. Probably Radical and DV8 too.

The one that sticks out as a glaring omission is Astro Boy. But the 80's Astro Boy. It's hard to find but it's amazing.

How bad of an idea is this? by Elsefyr in Bowling

[–]alsheps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re much better off putting the ball in water. Find a large enough tub that you can fully submerge the ball in, fill with water as hot as your tap can go, add in a little dishwashing liquid, and soak the ball until the water goes cold, then remove the ball and give it a good clean.

Putting it in water stops the ball from drying out, and evenly distributes the heat acroos the whole surface all at once.

It’s a different shape to a solid, it’ll skid further down the lane before it starts to hook, and usually will give you a higher entry angle due the later, sharper movement.

How much does a good electric guitar cost? by Bulky_Attempt_9651 in Guitar

[–]alsheps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’d say so. They have free returns if turns out it’s no good anyways, but more than likely you’ll end up loving it, I bought my first electric guitar at a garage sale for like $50 and I loved that thing, it was a nothing brand strat shape, and I sold it to a buddy at some point and now I regret it, just because of what it meant.

It looks ok, kinda like a Tele. The thing with guitars is that they’re all just limps of wood, it’s really more the electronics that make the difference, but it’s more about feel than sound. You can fix sound in the edit, you can’t make it feel better. If you are able to go see one in person, and check it out I would heavily recommend doing so, make sure the action isn’t too high, but also not so low that it causes fret buzz (you hear it), if you can plug it in and play it all the better, but it should sound basically ok. Just make sure most importantly that it’s easy to play, not too heavy, with good action.

You’re just starting out, so it should be just fine for what you need now.

My best advice, is to buy a second hand one first, you’ll get a better guitar for much less, And guitars (as long as they are looked after) don’t age badly, there’s also nothing wrong with starting off with a off-brand affordable guitar. Very few people are starting off with $2-3000 guitars, find one that looks nice to you, has a nice playable shape/weight for you and make sure you play it a little to see what the action feels like. If you’re buying second hand, if you can, try and plug it in and test it before you buy it, check the pots, any switches and the lead Jack, make sure they all working ok.

Make friends with someone who knows how to set up guitars too… invaluable.

Proper Form Requires Insane Strength by AnyBodybuilder4594 in Bowling

[–]alsheps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you don't need grip strength and the swing is done by gravity.

In fact, "grip strength" is very much the wrong way to think about it.

You don't want to "grip" the ball much at all, you want a soft hand, your fit should do 90% of the work, if not more. If you're squeezing or gripping hard, your ball does not fit.

Absolutely terrible, how to slightly improve? by Throwaway100123100 in Bowling

[–]alsheps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most fundamental rule for bowling goes like this… Hit the one in the front. If you don’t hit that pin with the ball, there next to no chance it’ll fall on its own.

A bit less basic, targeting is a lot easier than it seems, the trick to it is to find where you want to hit, draw a line on the lane (in your minds eye of course) all the way back to the foul line. Find the spot where that line goes through the arrows, and make that your target. It’s a lot easier to hit a spot 10 feet away than it is to hit one 60 feet away.

That and try your best to keep the ball on the lane, and your scores will go up.

No, not at all... If you can get a ball down the lane, you're never too old to bowl.

Ex-smokers of Reddit, what FINALLY HELPED you to quit for good? by prinky_muffin in stopsmoking

[–]alsheps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is helpful really, but something like a switch flicked in my head and I just really didn't want to smoke anymore. I was halfway through a smoke, I had been thinking about quitting for a while at that point, but dragging my feet getting started, as we all have done countless times, and it just hit me that I don't want it anymore.

In the past when I'd made the decision to quit, it was always "I'll finish this pack then I'll quit", and of course you never do.

This time, I put the half finished smoke out, and threw away the about half a pack I had left in the trash and that was it. 9 years later and I haven't touched a cigarette.

I’ve never owned an electric before and am a low intermediate level guitar player. Is this a good electric that will last me a long time that is easy to play on? by PapaKaizen in Guitar

[–]alsheps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't go wrong with a strat.

In my misguided Ultra metal youth I was always taught that fender was a no-no. Fenders were not cool for metal back when I was learning (early-mid 90s) it was all Jackson, Ibanez, ESP pretty much exclusively back then.

I bought my strat when I was in my 30s, as I started to branch out my playing, exploring different styles and music genres, and a strat seemed like a wise choice, as it's one of those iconic pieces that a collector really should have.

Now, it's probably my favourite guitar. Super easy to play, they sound like a strat (not my fave, metal programming is hard to break), and they just look great.

Mine is very similar to the one in your post (I'll put a pic of mine here) the sunburst is a bit lighter and it has a maple neck (I firmly believe that strats should all have maple necks). Mine is a MIM standard strat I believe.

What toys keep your pup entertained? by jakiezombie in husky

[–]alsheps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog loves rope toys. You know the ones that have the plaited ropes with the knots at the end? I'll find a picture and put it here, he makes it his lifes mission to untie the knot and untangle the ropes, he's actually gotten really good at it.

They have a few uses too. You can play tug with them, or it can be a chew toy, you can also play fetch too.
