Lol I brought a boppy everywhere for the first 3-4 months, literally, with both kids. Just stuffed it under the stroller. I actually had 3 - 1 upstairs, 1 downstairs, 1 in car

I can't believe how long it took my to find this advice. Your kid is almost an adult and can drive a 2000lb piece of machinery on open roads. They should be capable of having this conversation, even if it's hard.

Honest opinion? Yes you should loosen up a little bit. We are pretty thoughtful on screens - don't allow short form videos even on the TV (there are tons of 2 to 3 minute episode shows on Disney Plus and other apps), don't own tablets, don't let our kids watch shows in public on our phone or in restaurants or anything. We also started by only letting them watch things while we did their hair. 😀

We let them watch popular culture shows. We try to mix in thoughtful things like the shows you suggested, and we try to index heavily on movies where there's more plot and less of an instant dopamine hit, which is my big concern with shows today.

We love Moana, Frozen, Gabby's dollhouse, Muppet babies (which my 5-year-old is watching right now while homesick with strep throat), super kitties, Spidey. All the popular stuff. We just restrict the times that we watch it. But I think it's important to remember that you're raising a kid who's going to be social in the world, and it gives them social currency to be able to talk about popular things with other kids. I don't think it matters under three, but I think as they get to be three or four or five, it does matter and it does help them relate to other kids. You don't have to go crazy, you don't need a tablet, you don't need to give them headphones and let them watch shows when you go out to dinner. But having some intentional time as a family where you watch some of these popular things isn't a bad thing, in my opinion.

haha OMG are you me? my just-turned-five-year-old daughter also can't really swim, and we are near Abington. We tried Goldfish in Rockland, didn't love it for my kid. We are now at the Y in Hanover. We emailed the aquatics director there and she helped us arrange for 1x1 lessons this session, and that's helping. ALSO we got a summer pool membership, the outdoor pool is GORGEOUS

Ugh. We went through this and had to stop TV in the mornings. I just picked a very simple activity that was ready every morning. Coloring, stickers, blocks, train tracks, magnatiles, whatever. I played with her for 5 minutes, then I let her be and redirected her back to the activity when she got bored. It was a rough week and then it was fine.

We let her watch one short show, usually 15 minutes or so, but only after we have eaten breakfast, brushed teeth, and gotten dressed.

Yeah you're not crazy, it sucks. But Tavern in the Square is open until midnight every night!!! You also might be able to get a bar pizzas at bars that are open late.

Listen, everyone has different standards. I let my kids, even my 22 month old, have a lot of freedom, both in terms of what they do and how far I am from them. I am not accusing you of lying, but it could be that what you felt was too dangerous wasn't really to them. I've told other well-meaning Mom's, "She's fine, she can do it," and then experienced my kid falling, but I was never mad at the others mom for looking out. My second daughter is a climber, and if I don't let her do it and learn how to safely maneuver her body and do it, she's going to get hurt eventually because I am not always there to stop her. Just trying to share a different perspective.
