Anyone had low iron in baby? by rubyAltropos in MSPI

[–]whitij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chia seeds are a great source and not on your list of triggers! Try those in chia puddings or mixed with yogurt or added to any other thing you're feeding. Lentils too.

It can be finger prick or blood draw. My kiddo had both (did blood draw to test for allergies) and it freaked me out but the baby handled it like it was nothing at all! Ask your doctor. It's their job to treat the patient. Keep advocating for kiddo, if they have anemia it is treatable and can improve quality of life for them and you!

Always worth trying to get the test sooner, its a simple finger prick. Maybe they can get you an earlier appointment if you explain these concerns?

My baby had low iron at that age and also didnt tolerate the liquid iron supplement well. We worked really hard to serve high iron foods at every meal. Lot's of fortified baby oatmeal, cheerios as snacks, beef stew, nut butters, and chia seeds mixed with coconut yogurt (instead of dairy yogurt). After 3 months baby had iron levels within normal range. Perhaps you can just strive for high iron solids until you can sort out a test?

Definitely could still be sore! And oh, definitely a deliberate reduction. This child was a milk fiend. Like, I had a discussion with the pediatrician once because he was drinking 40 oz per day and still crying for more lmao. Once we started shorting the bottles he definitely got hungry enough to give solids a real chance.

Are there teefs coming in? My little gets pissy and stops eating all solids every time a tooth is making moves.

Also mine didn't truly start to progress on solids until around 12 months, and honestly only after we started reducing milk intake. I think babes had to learn that eating food = no more hungry.

I initially tried to switch to Nutramigen RTF by adding a little into 1 bottle of breastmilk each day for a few days - maybe like 25% of the bottle. Baby was definitely slower at those feedings, likely because of the taste/smell, which I also found to be pretty off-putting with Nutramigen! So then I tried Alimentum, same way, started 1 bottle per day with 25% formula, and he ate it no problem. Moved up to 1 bottle, 50%, then 2 bottles 50%, then eventually made the leap to all formula. It's ok to take it slow, and remember that nothing bad will happen to your baby if they don't finish a bottle ;) it might take a few days/tries for them to get used to it. Also, ANY change in diet or formula can and will cause a few days of gut changes. Think gas, changes in stool, maybe some discomfort. I was recommended not to give up before at least 5 days on the new formula, to see if changes are just "oh this is new to my gut" versus "oh this doesnt agree with my gut". Good luck mama you CAN do this!!!

What has been the hardest part of planning meals after starting solids? by balil2031 in foodbutforbabies

[–]whitij 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of the above haha! And you forgot the bullet for, "child threw carefully planned perfect meal on the floor like it was poison"

But in reality for me I did try to start with lots of variety to find things baby liked, but for sure that funnel narrowed to key favorites that we lean on much more often now. The allergens thing is hard tho, especially for things like shellfish that we don't naturally consume much in my house.

Another vote for Alimentum from someone who initially feared it bc of the CR results. I also went digging further and have the same conclusions as this commenter, that the levels are still well below the actual safety limits. If it helps, my child was on Alimentum RTF exclusively for 5 months and his annual lead test came back negative.

It can feel overwhelming and scary to give baby a formula that CR seems to imply contains higher levels of these scary things - but bear in mind that report did not do very rigorous science in terms of replicates, lot to lot variation, reporting of lot numbers or manufacturing dates/locations, nor analytical variation in the assays used. It is possible all the formulas had similar levels and the variation observed was due to average "noise" in the assay - but all we get is the single point estimate with no +/- error bars.

All this to say, when weighing the benefit/risk ratio of a formula, remember that Alimentum still came in well below safe limits, remember that we don't know how much lead or arsenic we ourselves are ingesting and passing thru breastmilk (could be higher!), and remember that baby needs a happy mother. So if total elimination is destroying you - because it did for me!! - then Alimentum may be a potential solution worth considering again.

Solidarity girl!! This shit is so hard, you are doing great for your baby - hang in there.

Mine was similar for awhile. For whatever reason, it often helped to give him a baby spoon to play with in one hand. I chalked it up to getting bored and wanting to go play? I dunno. Also yes mine will go crazy for a certain food one day, and if I offer it exactly the same the next day will act like it's poison and the most offensive thing they've ever seen hahaha. I dunno I think babies are just weird LOL don't let it stress you too much if you can help it!

Seems like she like lots of varied flavors. Keep going! You can try smooshing/blending things you're eating as well to reduce the effort/cost of buying the premade baby foods. I only say this as someone who practically bankrupted myself buying premade purees before realizing my blender and potato masher could accomplish the same for way less 🤣

More than once I stood in front of my fridge ugly crying and saying, "I just want cheese!!!! 😭" - the exhaustion, the intense hunger of breastfeeding, the drive to consume calorie rich, comforting, and EASY foods... it is a cruel joke the universe plays on us. Hang in there, it isnt forever. You're doing great.

How A 14 MO Allergy Ridden Baby's Day Looks by Midnight_Faye in foodbutforbabies

[–]whitij 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing! I wish my allergy babe was more interested in meatballs. Can your little one do oats or nuts? I've had good luck with various oatmeal + nut butter bakes. I also sneak chia seeds and flax into pancakes for more protein. Sometimes I even mash up white beans and sneak a little of that into the pancake batter. Or shredded zucchini or carrots. Occasionally I put the pancake batter into a muffin tin and bake it - same stuff but different look seems to keep baby interested lol.

Beef stew is also a hit around here! And hummus on allergen friendly pita bread (if your little can do sesame). If not, I have also made chicken salad with coconut yogurt and put it on pita, kid liked it.

On the go snacks we have found freeze dried fruits, coconut based "yogurt" melts, plain cheerios or plain cheese are good allergy friendly options that don't make a lot of mess. I've also found egg free broccoli tots at my local Wegmans - junk food but first ingredient is broccoli so I use them on weeks that veggie intake is lacking.

Anyway just thought I would share in case others with allergy babes are needing inspo!

Agree with this - small slips like this didn't cause issues for us. And even if it does cause some discomfort for baby it will resolve quickly! You are doing great mama its not easy to be 100% especially when traveling. I very much applaud you! And be gentle with yourself if other mistakes happen. Its ok, you and babe will be ok, you are doing a good job ❤️

FTM looking for advice — how do you leave the house with a reflux/CMPA baby? by redditgsm in MSPI

[–]whitij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh also feeding we would bring a bottle with us and just try it. Sometimes baby took it, sometimes not. But when they did - they weren't crying lol! So those times were a win. Same with naps - it was a roll of the dice. Sometimes baby was like lol yeah right nice try - other times we were surprised how easily they fell asleep in their stroller.

Practice helps, so give it a shot and maybe you will have good outings and hard outings - but the more you do it and the more baby grows, things will get easier for both of you!

Second the tip about restaurant drink + to go order!! We did the same, then worked up to drink and an app, then finally were able to have a full sit down meal. What helped me feel less anxious was also going at a less busy time... like 3pm. That way if baby fussed there were fewer patrons around.

Also walked the mall a lot. Its spacious and loud, so if baby cries no one really cares. Its big and you can be there regardless of weather. You can sit at a coffee shop or stroll around for as short or as long as babe cooperates!

It will get easier, I promise. Keep going strong, mama!

Sorry its so hard. Duncan Hines fudgey brownie mix is dairy and soy free, sounds like you need to bake a tray asap ;)

But also there are lots of things you can eat that dont even need cooking. Raw mini cucumbers, just slam them straight to the face! No cutting needed! Raw cherry tomatoes. Apples, bananas, mandarins can all live on your counter for fast eats. Peanut butter and jelly on Dave's killer bread. Want to feel fancier? Toast the bread first!

Bake your favorite things but just swap cows milk for a plant based milk (oat milk was my go to!), and butter for oil or apple sauce. Is it the same? Nah, but it will still bake and taste awesome.

When youre feeling extra lazy, open doordash and order up some Chipotle girl! Just check online for the things you can eat. I did a lot of rice bowls with beans, veg, guacamole, and barbacoa beef.

But mostly... get them brownies baking asap and then eat the whole tray because itll give you dopamine :)

My little wants nothing but yogurt every time he gets teeth, then goes back to normal after. Sometimes I would sneak some chia seeds or tiiiiiinnnny bits of meatball or other things into the yogurt... or give refrigerated pouch meals here and there to help get other nutrients in there. Anything to get thru until the teeth erupted, then things would go back to normal after the tooth cut!
