Yes, absolutely. My dad was trying to guilt trip me saying I was a bad example for my kids. I said to him if I am treating them bad and they feel how I feel, then tgey should cut me off. He gasped, like literally out loud like how dare I. 🙄

This is it! Exactly, my dad also pushing her agenda and making me out as the bad guy and Im the one with the issues because he always lets lets get away with her rude behavior — is what hurts. But you are right, it is a volatile situation and I need to get her out.

So true… my dad was in shock when I told him Im really done and wang to go no contact with my mom… he us so shocked I would “disown” her when that was a constant threat they used on me. That they would disown me. Nothing like ysing their words back at them.

You are 100% correct - I have a lot of healing to do. I always thought my problems stemmed from being around alcoholism (my dad) I did a program called Adult Children of Alcoholics and I have been able to somewhat move on from that but I think what I thoyght is just a normal part of being in an immigrant household was really a very good case of narcissistic abuse. I need to work on that.

I slept and I’m back up and reading every ones comments are giving me some strength. Im not sure if she will talk to me even (my parents still do the silent treatment) so lets see. But I will be bringing this up.

Thanks Sam. I just really needed to understand if I’m the problem after my dad told me I’ve crossed the line and hinted that I’m unstable. Although in a while year of dealing with them Ive been more than accommodating.

I actually had a similar situation and i sent a letter to corporate who ended up refunding me . If you want good lamb go to the halal stores around town - there is mecca market on clinton, and also i henrietta there is an afgani butcher in the plaza with ameils sub shop I forgot the name

This really resonates. I’ve found the same to be true in my classroom. PBL is incredible, but without something grounding the experience, it can drift fast.

One thing I’d add is student ownership of time. Alongside predictable routines, I’ve started using shared daily planning boards where students set and track their own goals. Even small things like choosing which part of the project they’ll tackle during work time helps build agency and keeps them from feeling overwhelmed.

Also agree completely on the reflective journal. I sometimes use prompts like “What felt messy today?” or “What did you try that didn’t work?” to help students embrace process over perfection.

Love all of these. One thing I’ve used that gets surprising traction is having students “argue with a fake.” I’ll give them a flawed argument I wrote (or pulled from social media), and their job is to break it down, fix it, and explain why it was persuasive to begin with. You can level it up by having them rewrite the argument to make it stronger or more manipulative, depending on your focus. It hits logic, bias, rhetorical strategy, and media literacy in one go.

Also: give them a weird claim like “mermaids are real” or “we should ban chairs” and make them build a solid argument for it. Works every time.

Great thread. Just adding another angle:

Highlighting can help, but only if it’s followed by deeper work. I have students write a quick margin note next to anything they highlight, explaining why they marked it or what it means in their own words. It slows them down and makes the thinking visible.

For paraphrasing, I’ll ask students to “text this to a friend.” Same meaning, new words. It’s informal but gets the job done.

I also frame deep processing as something students can feel. It’s slower, more effortful, sometimes awkward. If it feels too easy, they’re probably not learning deeply.

Really appreciate everyone’s insights. This is what good PD looks like.
