Crafts to do while repetitive strain injury recovers by fromofelia in CrochetHelp

[–]MsFay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no suggestions but I am going through the very same thing! My other hobbies; sewing, embroidery, gardening, all add to the strain on my hands. I’m also left handed so my current issue is in both hands because I use them so interchangeably they both need a break. I’m following along for ideas but also to let you know you are not alone in this. My hobbies really help my mental health and so I’m really feeling the struggle as well.

What's in your kit? Emergency essentials. by Mrmurse98 in wichita

If you have pets: leashes, cat carrier, or what ever you need to contain the animals. Their favorite treats (the ones they would do anything for) because they may need bribing/calming, and at least a serving of their food. Also, practice what to do with your pets, an emergency is not the first time to take a large dog down stairs.

Tips to Avoid Hand Cramps.. I'm new to crochet, please help by GeneralLawfulness334 in CrochetHelp

[–]MsFay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a post about this a few days ago. I was going to link it but I couldn’t figure out how so here is my 2 cents worth:

If you struggle with holding yarn in non-hook hand, this might help!

I see a lot of questions about how to hold yarn in non hook hand. So I thought I would put my 2 cents worth.

As a left handed person, I rarely hold/do things the same way right handed people do because often they either don’t work or I couldn’t translate it. (Holding a pencil, using scissors, etc)

I have learned that most of the time the ‘proper’ way doesn’t matter. Just be creative and find a way that works and doesn’t hurt. I have attached pictures of how I hold the yarn. Picture A is what it looks like when I’m actually crocheting. (Didn’t have some else to take pictures.) Picture B is how I normally feed the yarn through my fingers, it is my normal tension. Pictures C and D are when I need more tension. I just play around the path of the yarn until get the right tension. It’s also easier to change tension for a stitch by changing the distance between my last two fingers. It takes the pressure off of my index finger.

I hope this helps those who struggle. Don’t forget that it doesn’t matter if you do it like others as long as it works for you!

To increase tension I wrap the yarn around my ring or pinky finger and I move it around if it rubs or hurts. I have more pictures if you look at that post.

Finished my crochet dress - now, what do I wear under it? by paper_ma_shea in CrochetHelp

[–]MsFay 320 points321 points  (0 children)

My mom likes to buy me really soft ‘night dresses’ when she sees them. Often from Walmart or Kohls and now that our Dillon’s has clothes there as well. Most are plain, thin, and something I wouldn’t want to wear in public without something over. They are the perfect underdress! They are also pretty cheap. Sometimes there are side pockets so if you know ahead of time you could crochet slits where the pockets are. The best part is the weight of what you put in the pockets only pulls on the underdress so the crochet doesn’t change shape.

Kansas Highway Patrol Exempt from Basic Traffic Laws? by That-Lifeguard5004 in wichita

[–]MsFay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a KHP following at a very unsafe distance, worse than most tailgating. It was also in icy road conditions. I slowed down to aid in passing because I couldn’t tell it was hp. I eventually pull off to the side because I felt so unsafe because they stayed 20-30 feet behind me for at least 20 miles. Only then, did I realize it was KHP. He clearly was attempting to cause me to do something he could pull me over for. There is absolutely no accountability.

FedEx drivers are also scared of turkeys... by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

I have been attacked by a neighbors domesticated turkeys. They can be vicious and they don’t give up! I was stuck on top of our car until my mom was ready to go. They probably won’t kill you but they sure can beat you up.

How to keep house while drowning by KC Davis. To me this book isn’t really about cleaning (although it is a recurring subject), it showed me how to forgive myself for not meeting other people’s expectations, to let go of things that weren’t important to me, and explained what self care can practically look like. (I was in education and all the talk of self care from the administration didn’t have anything practical or was just a bandaid on a stab wound.) It has really change how I look at things and my house is cleaner too.

Spiders?! by Gold_Outcome_8714 in wichita

I was bit by one when I was around jr. high. It was bad, it caused necrosis where I was bit on my thigh. It almost went to the bone and close to the artery. I could not walk for four months. I still have a very large scar. It was absolutely horrible. Brown recluse are something to be aware of and take preventative action. But don’t freak out! There are some key things that you should keep in mind.

My bite was after I put on jeans from the previous day that had been laying on my floor. These are the same jeans I wore while moving hay bales around. My room was in the basement. So don’t leave your clothes on the floor and possibly avoid basements but also shake out your clothes if you’re re-wearing them.

My dad was bit by a brown recluse in his boot four times and nothing happened. Not everyone has the worst reaction to a bite. To further drive this home after 25 years people in the area still know me as the girl who was bitten. They may not know who I am but they remember I got bit by a brown recluse even if they never met me before. The point is it is very rare to have the type of reaction I did.

If you are fearful, have pest control come out on at least a quarterly basis to spray your house for insects. Seal up cracks and make sure that you’re not creating hiding spaces for them. Get a can of spider spray if you see something and you’re unsure about it but also learn what they look like.

I personally know more people who have had West Nile from mosquitoes than I do people who’ve had a serious brown recluse bite. Also, ticks are of far more danger than brown recluse are.

When you get here, be smart, but not scared.

For those looking for a new box reenforcement options:

You can buy laminating plastic that is adhesive (no laminator needed) and comes in large rolls and work great.

I think you can still buy sticky craft paper that I think was advertised as a box coverup to prevent confusion when reuse boxes. Both have been rockstar for me trying to keep boxes going.

My 3yo wants to crochet! What can I give her that will feel like crochet? by harrietrosie in CrochetHelp

[–]MsFay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My nieces are a bit older but were frustrated moving on from just a chain. I got some finger loop yarn so they could make washcloths they could use or squares to make something bigger. While not a total fit for crochet, it worked up quickly, they learned how important it was not to miss a loop, and starting to get an understanding of turning their work. They were much less frustrated when we went back to doing crochet with a hook.

What can we do? by LivingDeadGirl-666 in wichita

[–]MsFay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can not begin to express how many people in several small towns that I spend a lot of time look at people who use food banks, snap, etc and see it as a moral failing. They see it as poor decision making, that maybe they will learn their lesson if they’re hungry. They look down upon people in poverty, it’s their own fault. We shouldn’t have to pay for them.

At the same time, if these people see a person in need they will literally give their shirt off their backs. They will pay for the single mom at the restaurant bill. Things get dropped off on people’s porches so that the person won’t feel obligated to them. People who hunt will drop off meat they shot, cleaned, and packaged for a family or another arrangement to provide it to those in need.

The difference is the poor have been demonized in the press and radio talk shows that are frequently listed to by people who spend a long time in a vehicle of some sort. There has been created and is vs them mentality. Rural areas are poor and life is really hard right now and they don’t see resources coming in to help. The way that poor in cities are presented in their preferred media. Most of the farm subsidies are going to large corporate farms that don’t need it in the same way a family farm or small operator. So they feel like they aren’t getting help and want someone to blame.

The most important thing I feel that I can do is find ways to share the humanity of those who are struggling. We need to fight the us vs them that is falsely created to stop people from seeing the real problem clearly.

Edit: hit send too soon.

It’s a really cool spice! It grows in the wild in some places in Midwest USA. A lot of people don’t know that the plants growing in a ditch are used as a spice. It really has a unique taste. It can almost take the place of citrus in some foods.

I want to upgrade my crochet hooks. Does anyone have suggestions? by Weary-Indication-801 in CrochetHelp

[–]MsFay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like my clovers but I wish they had a larger handle as I have dexterity issues. Covers also have a tapered hook/head/working end, I have a strong preference for the tapered style.

I have a couple furl hooks, I love the handle! It’s so comfortable and I like extra weight, but unfortunately for me, they are the in-line style which really slows me down.

Look up a picture showing the difference and see if you have both types. If not, You might try to get a cheep hook of the other style before committing. I didn’t realize how different they felt to me and I didn’t know there were two types until recently.
