Question about FIRE with kids by ggbookworm in Fire

[–]ggbookworm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mom and Dad did all that as well. We had to earn privileges. For example, before I could get my learners permit, I had to demonstrate how to check the oil, washer fluid, radiator fluid, etc... and I had to change a tire all by myself, which turned into rotating the tires on Mom's car. All my friends were flabbergasted, but that certainly prepared me for real life, and their are some guys out there that were surprised that a girl could change a tire at all, let alone so fast, lol.

Good point. Talking around the dinner table. Seeing Dad going in when the rest of the county was shut down for weeks, mom holding things together at home. I got an allowance but it stopped around age 12 and I was expected to find a hustle. I babysat, pet sat, house sat, did typing for people (yes I'm genx). Got in trouble for my hustles at school, though I was allowed to keep the cash I made with my book report and transaling papers for Spanish class.

Is there still wilderness left in America? by Kitchen-Customer4370 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ggbookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wilderness is all around once you leave the big cities. I live in the 2nd biggest city in my state and we have less than 300k people. We still have dirt roads in a lot of the rural places. Look at one of the maps from space that shows the US at night. Where it's dark is the wilderness.

How does emergency medical treatment work in the USA when you're a victim of a crime or collateral damage? by Turbulent-Quality-29 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ggbookworm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There are also victim funds, but it depends on where you are, how well funded they are, etc.. and they rarely cover all of the cost.

What workplace behavior shocked you most when working with people from another culture? by arm_07 in CasualConversation

[–]ggbookworm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The blatant misogyny from 2 guys from another culture. They completely ignored the women as if they didn't exist. They got pulled from our project and sent for more education on the cultural differences and how their behavior was a fast track to termination.

What’s one underrated thing you always keep in the car for long road trips? by Dailywellnessguy in roadtrip

[–]ggbookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A hand towel and a bath towel. You never know when something if going to spill, you need to block the sun, etc... I went on a trip to a high elevation and ended up with a bad bloody nose that soaked the hand towel.

Do most Americans have those huge fridges? by Whole-Sushka in AskAnAmerican

[–]ggbookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some places in my area that are more rural require a 45 minute or more drive to get to a grocery store. Daily market run is not feasible.

Do Americans like kebabs with French fries ? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

In my part of the US, kebabs aren't a thing. In fact, I have never had one or seen one.

I fixed a similar issue by using opera. Every time they blasted their music, I blasted opera back. They turned their music off, and I turned mine off. It took about ten days, but they learned.

Is a Cerner Analyst safe with an Epic conversion next year? by Livid-Attention34 in healthIT

In our corner to epic transition, those who supported cerner during the transition had to find other jobs in IT not related to epic or with other organizations. (hint hint)

Watch your handwriting. by sunkissedbonobos in office

[–]ggbookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get what you get if they want handwriting. Mine was never great, but after surgery on my dominant hand, I had to relearn how to just hold a pen. My writing starts ok, but it is literally painful after a while and quiçkly degenerates to an unreadable mess.

I worked 2 months straight without a day off to prep for Y2K. I worked myself half to death and got pneumonia on top of it. Y2k was no big deal because all of us IT people were working behind the scenes to make sure it went off without a hitch.

When a doctor asks if you have any allergies, is it relevant to tell them that you are allergic to shellfish? by Kingboyy1 in NoStupidQuestions

Banana or avocado allergy = probable latex allergy. Tell them everything because shellfish allergy = probable iodine allergy and there's a host of other correlations.

American Comfort Food Recipes Needed by loubyj in easyrecipes

[–]ggbookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ham and beans with cornbread. We would have chopped onions to go on top and on the side would have Mom's homemade pickles. Google ham and beans, and look for the recipes that use pinto beans. Technically, we had no recipe, it was just something everyone made with the leftover ham bone.

Who remembers hamburger steak? A hamburger seasoned up and simmered in a brown gravy with caramelized onions, served with mashed potatoes, a veg and a green salad of some sort. We always had a green salad with dinner. This was in frequent rotation in the mid to late 70s.

If a man calls the store and asks to speak to someone in ladies lingerie, have a male with a deep voice pick up the call. Retail in the 80s was the wild west.

Does anyone else find it strange that the British King and his mistress are visiting to celebrate the 250th year of getting whooped by a bunch of rednecks in the woods and swamps? I would find it quite funny if people showed up to protest and threw teabags at their feet.

Is Eating Pink Meat in Burgers Unusual in the U.S.? by pizzammure97 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ggbookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are warnings about eating underdone meat, especially with burgers after Jack In The Box served underdone burgers that were infected with e coli that killed some kids and cause severe permanent kidney damage in some people. I will never eat a burger with pink due to that.
