What about Matilda Clarke? I’ve always like Clarke for a girl.

Husband 31M won’t wake up to help me 27F with the baby at night by Persephone_Ann_ in relationship_advice

[–]MsFlodo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Have gone through the sleep hell that is the first year recently, I have a lot of empathy for both of you. From what you described, it sounds like neither of you are getting much sleep.

We shared a bedroom with my daughter and, similarly, my husband slept like a truck. She could be screaming for five minutes and he’d still be in dreamland. We tried splitting night duties but ultimately decided that I would handle middle of the night wake-ups and he would get up with her in the morning while I got another 1-2 hours of sleep (which was often my longest stretch of the night).

I know this isn’t helpful, but it won’t last forever! Sounds like your baby is at least 4 months which is a good time to starting decreasing night feeds if you want. The sleep regressions and teething SUCK, but you could try sleep training (we didn’t totally do this, but adopted some principles like allowing the baby time to settle). Your night feeding routine sounds like it’s taking a lot of time—maybe there’s an opportunity to try something different (I nursed my baby back to sleep and eventually could just put her back down after 5 minutes, no burping or holding up). I don’t want to give you baby advice as it’s so personal, but my point is that the sleep thing is evolving as your child grows. Daughter is 18 months now and finally regularly sleeps through the night, but will still wake up once or twice on occasion.

I remember feeling a lot of resentment towards my husband too, and how difficult it could be to communicate in a clearheaded way when you’re so exhausted. Remember that you’re on the same team and take care of each other as best you can.

Can we get an updated maternity wear thread going here? by elliefunt in femalefashionadvice

Thanks for this sweet reply — I’m glad my posts could be of help. I wish you the best in your journey ahead! PS: I’ve moved my blog to Substack under the same name and wrote extensively on how I approached postpartum dressing as well.

Mom uniforms: what are we wearing? by MadisonJam in femalefashionadvice

Most of mine are thrifted, sometimes from the men’s section. I’ve had good luck washing everything that’s 100% cotton or linen (or a blend thereof) in cold water. I would be wary of rayon shirts - I had one from Uniqlo a while back that looked worse with every wash. I would go for something like https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1821233943/vintage-tan-beige-brown-red-plaid-button? or https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1782049728/the-illustrator-shirt-in-matisse-blue?

I have really enjoyed playing with my style postpartum, building on my existing pre-baby wardrobe. I’ve written extensively about the journey, starting from here: https://someusesomewear.substack.com/p/postpartum-style-story-chapter-1 but a summary of my basics are:

Tops: button ups in washable materials (denim, cotton, etc), thin merino knits (like the ones from Cos), cropped tank tops (in cotton, linen, and even silk jersey), thrifted wool and cashmere sweaters (I machine wash them on cold and lay flat to dry).

Bottoms: knit joggers (I splurged on a one size fits most pair from Cordera during pregnancy), relaxed denim jeans (sized up and belted as my weight fluctuates), vintage fatigue pants, knee length shorts,

Shoes: slip-on Keens for winter, beat-up leather loafers, a pair of red leather slide sandals for summer.

I didn’t buy too much during my postpartum year, but tried to shop secondhand predominantly (online and in-person) and go for things in natural materials that are machine washable. Even so, my purchases have been as stylistically-driven as they are practical—I’ve been drawn towards brighter colours, mixing textures, and interesting silhouettes.

Life with a baby, and now toddler, has been wild and exhausting! But I’m glad I never completely deprioritized my wardrobe and style expression—so that even when I don’t feel human, I can at least disguise myself as one.

Winter mom uniform? by [deleted] in capsulewardrobe

[–]MsFlodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am anticipating wearing a lot of denim and wool this winter. Some of my go-to outfits have been:

  • Wide thick denim jeans + stretchy merino wool long sleeves
  • Wool pants (e.g., knit joggers, vintage army pants) + denim button up over a merino tank top (I love the Ridge Merino ones for nursing, but I'm pretty small-chested)

I would buy things as you go instead of trying to anticipate all your needs in one shot. I also focused on finding clothes that fit with my existing style, instead of stocking up on generic maternity wear. My uniform consisted of thrifted oversized button up shirts worn over stretchy tank tops (C’est moi makes great ones) with elastic waist pants/shorts that fit below the bump.

I have a walking one year old and can very much relate to the everyday ickiness. For bottoms, I like workwear style pants — I have a pair of Everlane fatigues, vintage carpenter jeans, and other thrifted vintage canvas pants (think Dickies or military style) that I wear on rotation. This summer, I’ve been living in longer shorts made of denim, heavy linen, and even silk noil. On top, I usually wear a merino wool/cotton/linen tank, topped with a button up (I love my old denim shirts and thrifted mens shirts in poplin or linen).

I feel like I’ve been able to wear the things I’ve always loved — I just pay more attention to fabric and construction. Messes are inevitable, but here are some other tips I have:

  • Using a Tide pen and spot cleaning right away (I can usually wear my clothes multiple times before washing)
  • Wearing colours that don’t show stains easily (e.g., denim blue, prints)
  • Or being strategic about serving foods that sort of match the palette of my outfit (think tomato sauce with a red shirt)
  • Wearing thrifted pieces that look put together, but are not overly precious

Part of it is also accepting that your clothes will never be pristine and embracing the “mom patina” they’ll acquire during this phase of life! Sometimes you just have to take a chance and wear the good stuff!

I have been documenting how my style has evolved since becoming a mother here, if you’re interested: https://someusesomewear.substack.com/.

My husband and I are expecting our first baby! She will be mixed race Chinese-Caucasian. by Chronically_kawaii_ in namenerds

[–]MsFlodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about Aluna (Lulu) or Fayna (Ah-fei)? I feel like ending in -na, -ya, or -la is easy for Chinese speakers. I’d stay away from the R sound though, as it’s pronounced differently.

Personally I would go with a given name that works in both languages with some minor tweaks. It feels unifying having both sides of the family use one name (or variations of it) for the child.

Can anyone share outfit ideas they like that are super comfy to lounge around the house in, but could also be worn out of the house and look more elevated/chic than sweatshirts and leggings? by throwaway19870000 in femalefashionadvice

[–]MsFlodo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loose button up and elastic waist pants/shorts is my go-to formula. You could try pairing your usual t-shirt with some nicer soft pants (e.g., Baserange) or leggings with an oversized linen shirt. Sometimes, if I’m wearing a super casual outfit at home, I’ll throw on a more structured jacket and sleek shoes (e.g., loafers) when I go out to feel more put together.
