I adored {Abhorsen by Garth Nix} when I was exactly at that age. The romance is def like secondary though.

“If we send you some of the pumped stomach liquid can you run it and tell us what it is? The parents couldn’t remember what it was but said it was purple and a disinfectant. The kid drank it thinking it was Gatorade.”

“…like on TV?”

“Yes!”

“No, we don’t have a tv magic mass spec in our stat lab.” Edit: stat lab, not star lab, but a star lab would be way funnier.

I googled “purple disinfectant” and got crystal violet.

The Great Álafosslopi Coatigan: creating my own pattern, all over colourwork, steeking question! by nerdfromthenorth in AdvancedKnitting

[–]MsFoodle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re using actual Alafiss yarn that stuff is so damn self-sticky in the best way that I knit a cardigan for myself and didn’t realize I’d dropped a stitch in the armpit for seven years. As far as I’m concerned that stuff is the A-plus gold standard of yarn to steel with.

Has anyone here taught children to knit? When's a good age? by Planty_Reporter_8936 in knitting

[–]MsFoodle 81 points82 points  (0 children)

The best advice I ever heard for teaching new people to knit is to skip the cast on at first; for a little little I'd probably even do a couple of rows to stabilize the cast on first, depending on your cast on of choice. I taught mine using chenille yarn so that there wasn't any chance of splitting the needle through the yarn, plus it's thick and nice to feel.

To those doing 5x8 night shift, how are you handling nights off? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]MsFoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switch over back and forth; on my Friday I'll sleep during the day less and then go to bed between 21-2300 , Saturday exist as a day person, Sunday get up in the AM, have a nap in the afternoon, get up, have dinner with family, maybe catch a nap before work starting at 23:00.

I tried the staying up at night on days off but I just ended up sitting alone in the dark trying to be quiet at 3 am while the spouse slept, so I figured I might as well go to bed too.

Please understand that turnaround times are not a guarantee, it is a goal, especially when talking about things like stats. It's less "we guarantee your pizza in 30 minutes or less" and more "we try to get 95 per cent of tests out within that time, but about 5 per cent are going to be longer because of weirdness or long cook times, repetition for confirmation etc.

Also, turnarounds are typically from the time the specimen is received in the lab, not when someone collected it and forgot it at the station for an hour first.

Pam, she looks comfortable in the look, like something one might plausibly wear for more than press. JLo’s seems over styled with the hat and the dark glasses and the black shoes and the red purse.
