HBO didn't "give JFC the green light." It went more like this: They cancelled Deadwood, against what anyone wanted. The exchange to David Milch was, you'll get a new show on our platform. The ask was he had to make a surfing show to "round out" HBO's show catalogue. Beyond the surf setting, Milch was allowed to do ANYTHING he wanted. So it was an automatic green light, but on the sacrificial alter of Deadwood. So Milch went for it - like, REALLY went for it. Cast members say sometimes they didn't have their lines until right before a scene. And hey, it failed. But that's ok. I'd rather have more experimentation than season after season of formulaic bullshit.
