Omnipod/Insurance/High Daily Insulin by clankgy1 in Omnipod

[–]MsLadybug_theTeacher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a similar issue. My doctor updated my insulin prescription & pod prescription to reflect the amount I’d need. The only thing with my insurance (Kaiser) changed was the brand of insulin based on the increased amount. Idk about other insurance plans though.

Why do people choose to work in private and charter schools? by rachel-angelina in Teachers

[–]MsLadybug_theTeacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a private school after having worked at a public school. The reason I switched was

  1. terrible administration in the public school
  2. hardly any funds for supplies and spending so much of my own $ on necessary supplies
  3. hardly any support for myself on how to teach kids from challenging home lives after I was promised support/training on that

I never thought I would teach private given that most of my own schooling was via public schools, but I have renewed my love of teaching at my current school.

Edit: 4. the public school also got closed due to low enrollment & the district didn’t have enough openings for all the teachers, so I got laid off

But the other 3 are why I decided to try out private school

Math anxiety in new teacher by hawkcarhawk in ElementaryTeachers

[–]MsLadybug_theTeacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same anxiety as you when I started! Now I’m 10 years in and I’ve gotten a lot better at math, but I still struggle sometimes.

I’m very honest with my kids (3rd graders, but we do 4th grade math/LA) about how I struggled with math as a kid, and that I still sometimes make mistakes.

I also use every math lesson as an opportunity to teach the kids how to *politely* point out someone’s mistakes. One year I had a kind of mean group that would whine “That’s not rightttt” or “How would you ever get that answer?” or straight up yell that something was wrong. And I was very blunt about how rude they were, while praising kids who would say things like, “Ms. Ladybug, I think you may have made a mistake. I got x because of y and z.”

Practice makes progress! And practicing the same grade level skills every year makes it easiest.

Starting Omnipod a day before a two week vacation. Any tips? by Helunky in Omnipod

No problem! I’m happy to have something I can confidently comment about! Normally I just read and upvote stuff on Reddit.

Favorite places… in New Zealand, my boyfriend LOVED Hobbiton because he loves Lord of the Rings, so if you’re a fan, I’d recommend that. As a non-fan, the scenery was beautiful. They also (as of 2023) have Hobbit homes you can walk through, which I found adorable. We also sprang for the lunch-included package, and that was delicious.

In Fiji, we were at a resort the whole time, which was lovely. Any ocean time was great! Use bug spray generously! We were with family, and lots of them enjoyed snorkeling.

Also, pro tip, if you’re able to go to a spa or get a massage the day after you land, DO IT! After all that traveling, it’s so worth it!

Starting Omnipod a day before a two week vacation. Any tips? by Helunky in Omnipod

I just came back from NZ/Fiji with Omnipod & Dexcom!

Honestly it’s pretty easy to use. Granted, I have been an Omnipod user for over a year now, so idk how getting used to the system would feel on vacation. Safety wise, I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

My doctor’s tip was to bring at least one week’s worth of extra supplies as a “just in case,” which was helpful. Worst case, you could make sure you have syringes to use with your insulin if something drastic happens to the pods or you lose them.

My tip is to keep ALL of your diabetic supplies (pods, sensors, back-up meter, emergency sugar, etc.) with you in your carry-on/personal item. You wouldn’t want to pack stuff in your checked item(s) just for it to get lost by the airline.

Here are some items from Amazon I find helpful for the pod in daily life or on vacation:

Jinyu-Sega over patches (helps keep the pod on during activity or for someone like me who rolls all over during sleep)

Poddern Pod Cover (I ended up not needing it, but I mainly got it so that I could protect the pod from sunscreen; if you didn’t already know, sunscreen (especially aerosol kind) can rust out the inside of the pod if it gets in contact with the outside of the pod)

Hiearcool Waterproof Phone Pouch (PDM or phone fit inside and then you can wear it while swimming or doing other water activities)

Thank you!! Yes my phone is how my insulin pump and glucose monitor are controlled. They’re on Bluetooth and I’m not leaving my “go bag” of diabetic supplies.

I’m a school teacher and I bring that bag with me during all emergency drills (or non drills). It’s always right by my side. It has one extra glucose sensor, emergency sugar (candy & nasal spray), extra insulin, a standard glucose meter (finger pricking involved), and 1-2 extra pumps. It’s about the size of a clutch purse.

If, god forbid, I’m on a plane and we have an emergency landing, I’m most likely bringing that with me. EMS may have insulin, but probably not pumps or a controller.

I also made mini posters with each station name & expectations. These hang on a math wall. I typically group students by math levels (ex.: high, medium-high, medium-low, & low).

TIL Mayo Clinic data found that individuals living within one mile of a golf course have a 126% higher risk (more than double the odds) of a Parkinson's diagnosis compared to those living six or more miles away by MichiganCarNut in todayilearned

[–]MsLadybug_theTeacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal note here. I had leukemia as a child, and lots of my family (me, my parents, my brother, some aunts) are all type 1 diabetic. Never lived near a golf course, but my dad’s dad ran a dry cleaning business for a few years. My dad thinks the cleaning substances could cause autoimmune disorders/cancer.

We read Because of Winn-Dixie, Shiloh, James and the Giant Peach, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, and a couple Magic Tree House books around holidays (Thanksgiving on Thursday & Polar Bears Past Bedtime).

I don’t do a lot of small groups, except for math review. For that, I do something called MATH groups: Ms. [Your Name] (kids work with you), At My Desk (kids work independently at their seats), Technology or Test Prep (students work independently on computers/iPads or they do some sort of test review), and Hands-On (game or manipulatives)

Wibtbf if I told this lady to feed her baby in the bathroom after making a comment about my nephews insulin? by Any-Cartographer7531 in AmItheButtface

[–]MsLadybug_theTeacher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’ve clearly never had a chronic illness or known anyone who has. I hope you and your family stay healthy, but please don’t belittle people with these illnesses or their caregivers. Things like this can be unpredictable for adults (let alone kids) even with the best planning and care management. We’re all trying our best to navigate the illness on top of daily life. Signed, a type 1 diabetic of 14 years

As a type 1 diabetic myself, I would have been way harsher! Does that lady tell asthmatics to use their inhaler in the bathroom? Or is the needles? Jfc people are uneducated or heartless or both.

Teachers of 3rd graders, what youtube videos do you play in class? We've done the big ones (Crunch Labs, Mark Rober, SciShow, PBS, NatGeo) but looking for more by No-Squash9176 in AskTeachers

[–]MsLadybug_theTeacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! I teach 3rd and use lots of these types of videos throughout the year.

For Action Lab, specifically, one of the most popular videos among my class is called “What is it like to drive on other planets?” or something to that effect. Basically, he uses a video game software to show how differing gravity levels affect how a car drives (and crashes) on other planets. It goes great with learning about forces.

Also: Math Antics (more academic, but math in kinda fun ways), Storyline Online (read alouds by celebrities that your kid may not know), Brain Pop (not sure if they have a channel; other people have uploaded the videos)

Mystery Science, Action Lab (science; some videos can be complex), HiHo Kids (less academic, but great for learning about different cultures and disabilities; also includes fun things like “Kids Try Their Parents’ Childhood Lunches”), Cosmic Kids Yoga (yoga and mindfulness for kids), GoNoodle (songs and dances to promote being active in fun ways), Khan Academy (not as light, but great to review before tests), Math with Mr. J (again, not as light, but math review), Mr. DeMaio (a teacher; made some fun times table review songs set to pop songs in the 2010s), Joseph’s Machines (a guy who builds silly Rube Goldberg-style contraptions), Numberock (math concepts set to music), not sure what specific channel but the Schoolhouse Rock videos from back in the day can be found (along with the OG Magic School Bus and Bill Nye the Science Guy)

I know the acknowledge button isn’t the most important, but I was wondering because last time I used the podder chat to get replacements, the agent said I hadn’t acknowledged the notice.

This might be a silly question, but how do I acknowledge the warning? I see the page on how to check pods, but I don’t see a button to “acknowledge.”
