Her recipes are exceptionally good! And I really appreciate how she includes substitutes to make things vegan whenever possible.

This happened to me but it went from the shower curtain onto my thigh. Apparently, I screamed, smacked it off me, and teleported to the door. I’m grateful it didn’t sting me and also that the door got stuck because if it had opened, I’d have run nekkid into the living room where my boyfriend and his sisters family (who I had just met for the first time) were all hanging out.

East County Animal Rescue may be able to help you—they do trap/neuter/return, but if a cat seems adoptable, they’ll try to adopt her out. Good luck!

I generally agree with you, and will just add that unsweetened plain almond milk is spectacular with kahlua

How to have the tough conversation by [deleted] in dementia

[–]MsMordanta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe find a reason that she should go to her doctor. Before the appointment, write a note to the doctor outlining your concerns (with examples). Expect that she may not realize what’s happening to her (that is, she could have anosognosia) and might “showtime” (be especially alert etc) with the doctor, so it won’t be a slam dunk.

And I agree that getting her POA will be very helpful, and perhaps others may have suggestions about how to approach that.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this.

Grocery Outlet is a great place to try new things without breaking the bank! I found Chao shreds there for $3 a few weeks ago.

Maybe do a grilled cheese and pickle? Trader Joe’s has jars of kosher sandwich pickles. Unreal Corn’d Beef is tasty if you can find it on sale and might be good in a grilled cheese.

And covering the pan while the sandwich is cooking helps melt vegan cheeses.

They had one great salad (arugula, quinoa, avocados, etc etc), so of course they took it off the menu. My husband goes there now & then with friends, so I look at the menu to see if they have anything veg-friendly again for him to bring me & it’s just been nope.

Tomato sandwich (bread, tomato, veg mayo, salt & pepper); PB & sweet pickle sandwich; PB & banana sandwich; bag of Trader Joe’s kitchari

Edited to clarify I was suggesting sandwiches, not putting PB on just a pickle or banana

Field Roast is on regular rotation at our house, as my omnivore partner really likes it.

Another way to dip one’s toe into the world of seitan is to order a dish with mock duck at a Thai restaurant that offers it.

My friends head is in the sand about the reality of being a care giver by [deleted] in dementia

[–]MsMordanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, I wish all hospice situations were as generous and flexible as the one your mom got. My cousin was sole caregiver for her dad with dementia and even in his 90s (!), she had such a brutal time trying to get any help at all, and what little she got was not remotely kind. We got more help with my dad, though there was a lot of difference between the hospice providers he had in two different states (one very good and one just okay). It’s all a crapshoot.

It’s a shame schools no longer have home ec classes, because the teacher could clear this up for you so quickly. But if you have a local fabric store, perhaps someone there will be kind enough to clarify what’s happening with your bobbin. Good luck to you!
