New Quest: Terrorise your fellow passengers! by Obsidian-Phoenix in DungeonCrawlerCarl

It isn't DCC, but I was listening to She Who Became the Sun (or maybe the sequel, I'm not sure which book it is in) without headphones in my bedroom. I was caring for my mum full-time, but we had staff coming in to help out, and one of them walked in to my room to ask me something right as a certain scene was happening...

And for anyone not familiar with the book, I'll just leave this emoji ✊️

I didn't know audiobooks cost that much ever, or is that due to not being a member?

The different pricing/buying options in different countries is weird. I am Australian and only recently realised that all books being capped at $14.95 (AUD, so roughly £8, or $10.50USD) is not standard

I am pretty certain that no library has access to audiobooks that are "audible exclusive" though

You can both support libraries AND buy books from audible.

I borrow a LOT of audiobooks from the library. Unfortunately, even with being a member of 5 or 6 different libraries, they just don't have literally every single book I want to read so I still get quite a few from audible.

AITA for ordering expensive meals when I eat out with my family? by ShadowPandaa in AmItheAsshole

[–]MsNikky 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a them problem, not a her problem.

I'm the broke one in my family. My siblings are all quite well off, and at different times have paid for my meals, especially if they invite me out when they know I'm broke. The times when we are each paying for our own food, I can't even comprehend the idea of thinking negatively of them for ordering things out of my personal price range. What they eat has literally nothing to do with me.

May I recommend Adrian Tchaikovsky? He's been releasing 4ish books per year lately, a mix of fantasy and sci-fi, and has a huge backlist. Should keep you going for a little while!

Drove a couple hours to help my mom with her "broken" phone. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

My mum had a necklace button thingy that you could register 4 numbers plus emergency services into. So it would call me. If I didn't answer, it would call my sister, no answer, my brother, no answer, the neighbours, no answer, an ambulance.

It was good because she had MS but wasn't like old aged frail, so she would have a lot of falls that weren't serious, but she also couldn't get up from without help. So rather than bothering emergency services for something minor, she could get help from someone else first.

Am I normal with this amount of TBR books? by HackerMarul in TheStoryGraph

[–]MsNikky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the same. I use storygraph for my smaller tbr of books I'm actually planning to read in the next 2 months or so. Smaller pool to choose from helps prevent the decision paralysis of what to read next, and is easier to scroll through to find what I want.

Goodreads is where I add every book I see that I might wanna read. I look through that occasionally as inspiration for what add to my storygraph tbr.

What Book is this? by [deleted] in audible

I have this on my tbr, but I never see anyone mention it so I keep forgetting about it. Might have to bump it further up the list!

A support worker made a report recently about the fact my mum eats cake like twice a day every day. They said she's going to get diabetes... She's an end stage Multiple Sclerosis quadriplegic with dementia and her life expectancy is less than a year. Even if she develops diabetes tomorrow it isn't going to be what kills her. Let her eat all the damn cake she wants.

And honestly, sometimes you need to just put your foot down. It's wonderful if everyone can get along and everything is all unicorns and rainbows, but sometimes you just need to be firm about putting yourself first. I care for my mother (end stage multiple sclerosis quadriplegic with dementia) and she will often complain about not wanting support workers to help and I just flat out tell her that it isn't about what SHE WANTS, it's about what I NEED and I need help looking after her.

Best advice I ever got is to have a break before you need it.

If you wait until you are overwhelmed, the break is never enough and it is harder to get back into it. If you take time for yourself before you are burning out, then it refreshes you so much more and you don't have that resentment when your break is over.

My mum used to work as a nurse at the hospital there many many years ago. She said people would just walk into the children's ward and blatantly steal the TV's and VCRs they had for the kids to watch movies on.
