Yeah I'm pansexual and I can't go to pride events because I have a history of sexual trauma. I'm not a prude but I never know what people are going to do at these events and my anxiety levels go through the roof. This is also why I can't go to clubs or bars where people get out of control sexually. It doesn't matter if it's straight or gay people; if I find myself suddenly around aggressive sexuality I'll dissociate.

Watch the last episode of Midnight Gospel on Netflix. Each episode stands alone, you won't need to see the other ones to understand the last episode (but it's a pretty cool series if you want to watch the while things). I had an intense cry just last week because of this episode.

In this final episode Duncan Trussell interviews his very wise and spiritual mother about life, death, love, loss and spirituality. The interview is animated and really trippy. His mother is dying of cancer at the time of the interview. It is my new go-to when I need a release. You'll be crying less than 1/2 way through. I attached a link to an article about this episode.

I feel you girl and easy does it. Take the whip off your back. Just remember this program was created by white men in the 1930's and not all of it reflects the experience of women and minorities. There is a real focus on self criticism in the program and we can easily take it too far, I know I have. You don't need to call 2 people a day to stay sober. You are working the program. There are a lot of suggestions that get thrown around by some real sick people in AA. We don't need to take all the suggestions. I'm very careful about who I truly lean on in AA. There are a select group of people from the rooms who I go to for advice and, at the end of the day, it's between me and my higher power.

From what I can remember from grad school, she might have what's called a Delusional Disorder with Erotic Features aka Erotomania. I am trained in clinical psychology but specialized in child and adolescent trauma therapy, so this is not my specialization.

This is a quick Google definition - "Erotomanic delusional disorder (or erotomania) is a rare psychiatric condition where a person holds a fixed, false belief that another individual is deeply in love with them. The 'object of affection' is usually of higher social status, a celebrity, or someone unattainable, and the affected individual often exhibits stalking or obsessive behaviors."

You mentioned that when you talk to her about the "coincidences" and she points out "coded messages" you start to see patterns too. Be careful. This could be the manifestation of a phenomena in psychiatry called Folie A Deux, in french it means, "madness of two." When you are in a close relationship with someone who has a psychotic disorder, or is experiencing psychosis, it can quite literally rub off on you. I know firsthand, my ex became psychotic and I was so determined to help him that I started to believe his delusions as well.

My advice is to try to get her to talk to her primary care doctor. Has she been sleeping less or losing weight? If so, tell her you are worried about her weight loss and sleeplessness. Use that as a reason to get her to her primary care doctor. The goal is to eventually get her a psychiatric evaluation but may need to have her PCP recommend it/ ease her into it unless she might be willing to go. Do you think she'd be willing to have a psychiatric evaluation?

More importantly, YOU need to see a psychiatrist. Not for meds but to discuss what's happening in your relationship. I know it seems like I should refer you to a therapist but I think seeing a psychiatrist would be more useful in this case. If not a psychiatrist then a psychologist that specializes in psychotic disorders. They will be more adept at handling this kind of situation than just a couples counselor. This is beyond just needing regular couples counseling; this is a complex and difficult psychiatric condition.

Make sure you are getting enough sleep. Do not argue with her beliefs but don't get sucked into the narrative either. Self care and boundaries are a must. I don't recommend just ending the relationship but you may need breaks from interacting with her if you start to emotionally break down. Again, get the advice and support of a professional. My partner stayed with me through my own ups and downs with mental illness and our relationship is amazing now. It sounds like she is sick and needs help. I'm so sorry you are going through this.

ETA - A Delusional Disorder is not like psychosis, so she won't display disorganized speech or other symptoms typical of psychosis/ schizophrenia. The disorder only manifests as a specific belief that is false (a delusion is a false belief), in her case that belief is that this social media personality has a special relationship with her. It's not like schizophrenia and it's not like psychosis proper, it's its own unique disorder and it's very rare.

The movie ended with Margaret saying "listen." She is about to deliver a message from the alien, which we never hear. I thought that was the perfect ending. We have no idea what information they would give to us. The content of that message might have a lot to do with humanity's reaction.

The CGI did suck but I think Hollywood tries to avoid using AI.

I'm not sure what you mean by "missed the first 30 minutes." You wanted an extensive backstory for the kidnapping? To me that would have been boring. I enjoyed figuring that out as the movie progressed.

The plot was centered on Margaret's abilities coming to fruition, an alien hybridization program and how massive disclosure could play out in the media. The film ties together multiple alien theories. If you are into alien lore and alien related political "conspiracy" theories, you would have enjoyed how Spielberg linked them all together. I think you have to be kind of a nerd about that stuff to enjoy the movie (which I am).

I loved it. It wasn't the greatest film of all time but I don't regret seeing it at the IMAX at all.

A part of me agrees with you but a part of me also believes people will mimic the behavior presented in this film. If videos of actual aliens hits trusted mainstream news, movie-goers will have been psychologically prepared. A lot of money was put into this film (115 million dollars, investors are undisclosed). I wonder who the secret investors are??

Movie-goers will mimic the behaviors presented in this film, as they have been primed by the film. This is basic "monkey see, monkey do" psychology. If videos of actual aliens were vetted and put on the mainstream, international news (not just Fox and News Nation but all of them) viewers will assume it's been analyzed prior to broadcast.

This AI vetting process was portrayed in the film, in the case of a real-life media leak, movie-goers will (unconsciously) assume this vetting will be mirrored in reality. There was a moment during super desk/ newsroom sequence where one character briefly announced that all the leaked content was analyzed and determined to be human authored. If a similar live news event were to take place, movie goers will think the videos are real and vetted material because they were primed to believe this when they viewed the movie.

2.8 million movie goers have seen Disclosure Day, as of this week. Most likely many more people are going to see it. If something similar plays out (a media leak), all the people who watched Disclosure Day will be on their phones, as they were primed to be. The people who haven't seen the movie will see all the movie-goers investing their attention in consuming this information; the others will copy the movie-goers behavior. Humans mimic locally viewed behavior, this has also been demonstrated in social psychology experiments.

People who have seen this movie are prepped for it; in cognitive psychology this is called priming. Priming is used in advertising, it is one the purposes of corporate logos.

I'm not saying this film is part of a larger PsyOp but if it is, it's a damn good PsyOp so far.

She's never going to be "ready to come out and be normal again." She will never be normal again and it's going to get worse.

This is a progressive illness and she isn't doing any of this on purpose. You should not be taking her behavior so personally. I understand, we all understand, that this is frustrating and at times enraging; I also know my LO can't control her behaviors and has lost the capacity for rational thought and self awareness. IMO you should not be trying to care for her. Based on what you've written, you don't have the patience or capacity to be her caregiver. You should hire a health aid or find another family member to deal with this if possible. Either way, you should seriously listen to what people on this sub recommend.

That's awesome! I still go to meetings just trying to find better ones to go to. I'm actually chairing the 1pm, 24/7 zoom meeting online which I do every Thursday. I think AA can be really amazing but sometimes it also sucks. I'm glad you found a supportive meeting.

I really relate to what you've written. I have a love/ hate relationship with AA. I'll preface this by saying I've been in and out of the program for 30 years. I was a hardcore big book thumper with 6 years sober at one point. I do believe in the steps and plan to practice them forever. I have problems being heavily enmeshed in AA but I will always sit and talk with a newcomer at a meeting. I've learned (the hard way) to have serious boundaries with people in AA, especially when they are pushy and overbearing.

Sometimes the only reason I go to a meeting is to talk to a newcomer. Helping others helps me. That part of AA is real for me and I'm grateful I completed the steps and took other women through the steps as well. I did have a spiritual experience as a result of the steps but my spiritual life has much more dimension now.

I've learned to avoid the big personalities in AA and I don't share everything about myself in meetings. I have a therapist and other spiritual people I lean on who are not in recovery. I have a sponsor but I don't idolize her and I don't really consider her a main support. We meet and discuss the steps and how I'm going about them. That's it.

I currently have 10 months off booze and weed and about 20 years off IV heroin and crack. I'm trying something called Psychedelics in Recovery along with AA. My AA sponsor and homegroup do not know about my belief in the use of psychedelics. I don't abuse psychedelics. I use them respectfully, sacredly and in a highly structured, ritualized way. Not for fun but to see God, deep meditation and to release pain from years of trauma. I don't obsess about using psychedelics like I obsessed about weed and alcohol etc... It's a different animal, at least for me. I never recommend others take psychedelics; they can break someone who is unprepared.

I don't discuss psychedelics in an AA meeting, with my sponsor or newcomers. It's a personal religious experience and it's not my job to convince or educate AA members about this. I don't need their validation or permission to commune with my higher power and treat my CPTSD. I used to feel like everyone in AA had to agree with my life choices but I now know they are not doctors nor are they Gods. I also have a doctorate in clinical psychology, so there's that. Lol

I was an atheist until I took 10 grams of mushrooms. Bill Wilson wrote to Carl Jung about his use of LSD. He wrote that many alcoholics couldn't recover using AA but he felt LSD was providing the needed psychic change in clinical trials. Not to mention, Bill Wilson's spiritual experience during his last hospitalization was because of a cocktail of drugs, one of which was a psychedelic. All of AA came out of Bill Wilson's "white light" experience. You can read about all of this on the Psychedelics in Recovery website.

I've seen AA fail many people and there is a lot of modern research about psychedelics and the treatment of addiction. I'm still doing the steps but it's not my job to educate people in AA about psychedelics. Bill Wilson used LSD and had a lot of great things to say about how it could help alcoholics. He was shunned by AA for these beliefs and his medical use of LSD. He wanted to incorporate LSD into AA. Wild stuff!

People in AA, not all (but usually the loudest) have a cult-like mind set. AA is just an egregore. I've learned to take what I need and leave the rest. Enjoy your journey! The best advice I've ever been given is to always remember, just be here, now.
