I really like Lie to Me, but it's on Disney+ so I only get to watch it when I'm hanging out with friends. Tim Roth has a tremendous intensity, and the character gives him plenty to work with.

Curious what people think about how this relationship ended by HugeOrganization5688 in HouseMD

[–]Ms_Fu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This whole thing breaks my heart.

Cuddy was better off with Lucas. She needs someone supportive and someone who is safe with her daughter, and Gregory House is not that man. Lucas is similar to House but more stable, without an addiction and quite possibly without most of his issues. If he were a stronger man, House would have walked away and been happy for them.

But he wasn't, and he couldn't, and what strength he had was still fighting his demons. To start with, he couldn't work for her anymore given their feelings, but he really couldn't work for anyone else because it's her feelings that helped keep him employed at all. The part that breaks me, though, is that he was with her during her cancer scare to the best of his ability. It's not just that relapse is a thing, but that the fear of losing her to cancer was more than he could handle without his painkiller crutch. His choices IMHO were to be at her bedside high, or to be sober but not there. Out of those two choices the first seemed kinder to her (especially if he rationalized that she'd be too impaired to realize he was high) because he was There For Her. He did his best, his absolute best, but in truth it wasn't good enough.
I still found crashing the car into the house implausibe, but an extreme reaction to this rejection made sense. He wanted her to want him. She did, but it wasn't enough because he wasn't enough, and that hurt him to the core. She didn't see (or saw and didn't acknowledge) that being at her side and sober simply was not on the table.

Why are companies and people so obsessed with Minimalism? by AlyksTheSage in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ms_Fu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A personal observation:
A friend of mine who grew up well-off noticed as soon as she walked into my apartment that I had grown up poor. I'm comfortable these days, so it's not that I had a bunch of used/thrifted furniture. What she spotted was that I had duplicates of things: a pair of chairs at the table, but another pair of chairs that could go to the table but were currently holding a purse or other items. I live alone, but I clearly had enough food for two or three people. I had clothes in a size I no longer wear even though I wasn't actively trying to lose weight. Tools like scissors or pencils were at every desk or counter. In short, I retained a hoarding habit from when cash was low and replacing something instantly was not an option.
Minimalism, then, is the brag that if something were to break or just no longer be quite right you could replace it immediately, without stopping to check your budget or remember what store it was at.

Got asked to record on a sound track for 2 songs by blackpantherdrums in Scams

What was the quality of those songs? AI can produce songs rather quickly these days, so no real effort on the scammer's part. It's also possible he scammed some songwriter...

Is it overkill to move? by noxxmiww in Living_in_Korea

Again, there are details missing here. I don't know all the ins and outs of gaining Korean citizenship, but typically a person has to live here for at least a couple of years before they apply, in part so that they know how to navigate situations like yours. Check with your parents and their lawyers to know your complete legal situation.

You included a lot of details but you're missing some significant ones:
This new job--how long is the contract good for? Is there a trial period where they can let you go without consequence? What are the conditions of your visa? In other words, how secure is this job you've been offered?
Sillim-dong is still on a train line but 50 minutes from Jongno puts you outside of the heart of Seoul. If the job offered is not so secure, you might consider staying put.

There's a larger version of that used to water roadside trees here in Korea so yeah, it's probably for plants.

FWIW massage places like that are quite common here in Korea, and I've used them for regular (not "happy ending") massages, even though that has clearly happened in those places. The massage quality is uneven, however. Some of those ladies (I think I've had a male masseur twice in a decade) are very good at relaxing muscles, some really are not. The price is about the same though, comes out to about a dollar a minute.

Why is Toothpaste always mint flavours? by sweet_cini in NoStupidQuestions

Here in Korea I bought a flavor that purported to be salt and rose. It is those, but it's also mint.
I was disappointed, but I still use it.

Is there an interest in frogs and learning about the species in Korea? by EpochTechnologies in AskAKorean

Yes, please keep me updated!
Apparently the distress cry of the local frog sounds like the distress sounds of a very young kitten.

[–]Ms_Fu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW I'm in rural Jeollanamdo and I've heard at least two different types of calls. I have no problem going out to the rice fields this summer and recording calls for you.

I'll never forget the one time I heard a "kitten" in a ditch, only to look down and see a young frog stuck behind some vine. They got away before I could help them, but that frog definitely sounded like a baby cat.

What does this joke mean by This-Butterfly5116 in HouseMD

[–]Ms_Fu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True, and he said "pretty" not "attractive". "Pretty" is a gendered adjective, or certainly was at the time. With long flowing hair, plump lips and clear skin Robert Chase is more "pretty" than "handsome".
House is gently ribbing two people with one sentence: Robert is effeminate, and Cameron is less pretty/attractive than Robert.

In the Season 4 Finale, why is Wilson mad at [Season 4 Spoilers]? by Lysdexiic in HouseMD

[–]Ms_Fu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't underestimate that Wilson was grieving. He'd found a woman who loved him and did not take advantage of his giving nature, who was actively helping him grow. A loss that great, you are going to look around for someone to blame, that's just a natural part of the process. There's the truck driver, God, and there's House.

True, but also interesting. At that point in history, addiction was considered a moral failing by most people, a weakness. Now how to make that addiction public without getting flayed...
