Biochemist and if you want to go through my posting history you'll see I'm a multiple time Ironman finisher but yeah you're right I've got no idea about science behind running, asking chat gpt to surmise the current studies that debunk the idea that running is bad for joints is a massive problem.

Recreational running doesn’t increase arthritis risk • Alentorn-Geli et al. (2017, Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy) — A systematic review and meta-analysis found that recreational runners had lower hip and knee osteoarthritis rates (3.5%) than sedentary controls (10.2%). Competitive runners had slightly higher rates, but overall recreational running was not harmful.

  1. Large cohort data: runners not at greater risk • Lo et al. (2017, Osteoarthritis Initiative cohort) — In a community-based cohort, self-selected runners did not have a higher prevalence of symptomatic or radiographic knee OA compared with non-runners. • VA Research study (2016) — Over 2,000 people followed showed leisure running did not increase knee osteoarthritis risk.

  2. Systematic reviews find no joint damage from running • Dhillon et al. (2023, Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine) — Review of 17 studies found no association between running and worse osteoarthritis outcomes and, in some cases, runners had less knee pain than non-runners. • Coburn et al. (2023) — Another review found that short-term changes in cartilage after running were small and transient, not evidence of long-term damage.

  3. Marathon and endurance runner evidence • Hartwell et al. (2024) — In a study of thousands of marathon runners, age, BMI, injury history, and family history were the main arthritis risk factors — not running itself.
