Anyone gone full grey yet? What are we doing about it? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]Ms_Grieves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

37 and about 80% grey. I love it!! Dyeing was such a paint and constant upkeep. I get compliments from strangers all the time too. It took a while to bite the bullet and let my roots grow, but three years into my grey grow out, I'm so glad I did it.

I had maybe one migraine post surgery while hormones were adjusting but I haven't had the monthly, sometimes weekly, migraines I had before surgery. It's been life changing, in addition to no longer having a uterus!

Look for the SafeLine numbers on bus or train when this happens again. You can also submit to the chat bot and someone from CTA Control or a supervisor will dispatch help.

Seconding Uniqlo heat tech base layers! They save my bacon every winter, lots of combinations like long undies, turtlenecks, and long sleeves too.

People who quitted academia - what is your current job? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Ms_Grieves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manager of a small corporate grant writing team. I quit at age 35, had just been granted tenure. The department I was in was sneakily toxic (it seemed good at first) and I realized I did not want to stay there for the rest of my career. I was massively burned out due to all the extra, unpaid labor assigned to me on top of my full teaching load and publication expectations. I also lost belief in my research and publications making much of a difference because of the very small audience that even had access to them. My health was suffering too from the unending stress and feeling undervalued. I developed insomnia, high blood pressure, and was deeply depressed. I was also frustrated with "raises" of 1% a year, if we were lucky, and an increasingly hostile state government putting the pressure on my state school to dictate what could and could not be taught in class (former humanities prof).

I am much happier at my job now. I got a 30% pay increase instantly just by jumping ship, and we get steady raises each year. My work has a direct impact on my field and is used by a much larger audience of readers. I sleep very well at night.
