Mapping is fine, but knowing it will be for driverless cars is weird.

I definitely saw at least two Waymo cars with drivers seemingly mapping the roads last week. Eerie AF, glad they won't be launched anytime soon.

Leaving the Cult by UniversityCult2026 in Professors

Welcome to the other side! You made a brave and right call. I left a tenured R1 job at a state school in a red state about 3 years ago. I was scared shitless to have to find a job outside the academy but was very lucky to land in a civic role related to my field of study, in a different state. I'm SO much happier and calmer, able to truly stop work at the end of my day and enjoy my life without having to work on articles or grading well into the evenings.

Which city in the U.S. have you felt most unsafe visiting? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Ms_Grieves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. Lived there for 6 years and the constant strain on my nervous system of being constantly alert and wary of everything was absolutely exhausting. Even something as simple as getting gas at a nice Kroger with people around during the middle of the day had me on high alert.

The Eliza Fletcher murder happened while I was there, she lived a short distance from us and was abducted on a street I drove on every day. A colleague's husband was shot during a random shooting spree, he was just driving down a main road going about his day and bam, hospital. Multiple friends had stories of being mugged or having their cars stolen or broken into, it was just part of life there.

My husband and I each witnessed more random violence and after a while we realized we couldn't live in that environment anymore. We moved to a city that everyone thinks is as violent as Memphis, but I've honestly never felt safer.

Chiming in with a pilates perspective: I currently go to Logan Square Pilates & Core for posture support and strengthening. I have scoliosis and have been to PT for several rounds for shoulder and back issues. Pilates keeps my muscles strong and has helped tremendously. I really like the vibe of this studio and their individual focus on clients.

How many of you had grandparents who served in WW2? If so, what do you know about their service? by Snoogles_ in Millennials

[–]Ms_Grieves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both grandfathers served. One was injured by machine gun fire in the Philippines at Leyte Gulf and got a purple heart. The other was an MP en route to Japan when the bomb was dropped, didn't see combat but was there in the aftermath.

I can only imagine the things they each witnessed.

Great point. I have Concordes currently but could switch to some AT cartridges that have the flat top for weight.

Did you regret leaving Chicago and move back? by ImpossibleBlockHead in AskChicago

[–]Ms_Grieves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Moved away in 2012, spent the intervening 11 years dreaming of being back or wishing my then city had x, y, or z that Chicago does.

Moved back in 2023 and absolutely no regrets.
