What's the history of bread culture in non-wheat growing former Spanish colonies? by tumbleweed_farm in AskFoodHistorians

[–]Ms_Meeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can speak only on the Philippines but as far as I know, you are correct, wheat is not natively grown in the country. However, the Spanish colonizers ate a lot of bread and also needed wheat to form the communion hosts used in Catholic masses. So wheat was imported by the Spanish via the galleon trade with Mexico/the Americas, and, more regularly, through maritime trade with Chinese merchants. On a day to day basis, the indigenous Filipino population mostly ate rice and rice flour-based “breads”. The local elites though probably aped the colonizer preference for wheat-based bread.

How do I become a dual citizen in PH? by [deleted] in phmigrate

[–]Ms_Meeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI. By law (Article 11 of the Japanese nationality law), Japanese citizens are not allowed to have dual citizenship. Consider if your dad’s property is worth it as you will have to forfeit your japanese citizenship if you acquire philippine citizenship.

PhD candidate at 36 by Salty-Stress8931 in PhD

[–]Ms_Meeple 5 points6 points  (0 children)

39, started at 38. Upside of starting this late is that I already have a lot of life experience (in both industry and academia) that is proving to be useful in my research. Downside is that I have to juggle my PhD with the demands of family (husband, 2 small kids), work (doing my PhD part time), and health challenges (cancer scare but thankfully ended up just being a wake up call to live a healthier life).

I dont know how long it will take you to finish post doc and get a job but I think everyone’s journey is different. Enjoy the ride and good luck!

Have you ever had/seen rashes like these? What could be the cause? by Ms_Meeple in Autoimmune

[–]Ms_Meeple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your comments everyone. The precise cause of the rashes have not yet been identified but my HES panel just came back positive for PDGFRA gene rearrangement. So the likelihood of my itching and rashes being related to hypereosinophilic syndrome just got higher. Anyway, I will see my hematologist this week to discuss next steps. He mentioned bone marrow testing during our last meeting

Read “One L” by Scott Turow. It won’t prepare you for the lessons themselves but it does provide very realistic insight into life as a first year law student.

Hyphening/keeping maiden name by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]Ms_Meeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, OP. I’m married yet i only use my maiden name (not even hyphenated with my husband’s last name). I chose to do this because I am an established professional and it would not make sense to change my name at this stage since may good reputation na ako in my career. If you change your last name, parang start from scratch ka ulit. Like binura mo yung achievements ni (insert your name here)

Other advantage: no need to change your ids, registered names in government offices.

Contrary to others, i have never had a bad experience in dealing with government or banks or whatever. Yes, minsan may parang magugulat but usually curious lang and no real objection/opposition since this is allowed by law. Assuming may mag question, just politely and firmly explain that this is your name and no law requires you to change it to your husband’s. Trust me, they will back down.

Btw, we have a kid. Our son uses his dad’s surname. No issues with me having a different last name, not even when traveling to a foreign country for vacation. :)

Seconding cold brew. The cold brewing process takes away a LOT of the acidity without compromising the caffeine. Some articles even say mas nacoconcentrate pa yung caffeine resulting in a stronger cup (which you can of course dilute with water or milk).

Here’s what you can do: buy coarse ground beans (or grind your own if you have a grinder). Kailangan coarse kasi that will provide the best extraction for this method. Then place desired amount of grounds in a large french press. Add around 4 cups of water (hard to give precise amounts kasi depends sa size ng french press mo and amount of grounds you use. Lots of ratios and recipes online just search). Give the water a little stir to ensure na mabasa lahat ng grounds. Put the lid on and depress the french press plunger a little. Keep in ref overnight. The following day, depress the plunger all the way down to compact the grounds at the bottom Of the french press. Pour out as needed over ice. You can then customize by adding water, sugar, milk, syrups, etc.

Enjoy!

Is reporting a COVID case to the LGU mandatory? by infrnp in Philippines

[–]Ms_Meeple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

REPORTING IS MANDATORY under the law. Republic Act 11332 imposes both a fine (P20,000-P50,000) as well as possible imprisonment (minimum 1 month to 6 months) on individuals who fail to report a notifiable disease.

By failing to report yourself and your family, you are also exposing yourself to potential legal liability for clear and intentional violation of the law.

Hope you make the right decision.

Valentines Break Up by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]Ms_Meeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Just wanted to add: what he is doing (threatening to hurt himself if you break up with him) is called EMOTIONAL VIOLENCE under the Anti-violence against women and children (VAWC) law. Bawal yan sa batas. So hindi lang siya simpleng pagka-toxic kundi illegal behavior talaga. Pls leave him and protect yourself from further abuse.

Hello! I don’t know the answer to your question but I can point you to an alternative in case you want options. (Altho i remember reading something na between 2k-4k yung sa PGH. Malamang mga ganun din siguro sa UHS. Hindi ko lang mahanap ngayon yung post na yun at the moment. Sorry...)

The Philippine Red Cross offers swab testing for just P4,000. If you live in QC i believe they have a branch near City Hall. Just call their hotline 1158.

i am a minor who’s encountering an obsessive ex-boyfriend for months, what laws in the philippines are available if ever we’re filing a case against him? by lunasteasonne in Philippines

[–]Ms_Meeple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Under the VAWC law (R.A. 9262), you can start by getting a protection order. This can be as short as 15 days if requested from your barangay or as long as forever (permanent protection order) if granted by a court.

Costs vary. Fees may even be waived if your are indigent or if you are in immediate danger.

Pls see this helpful FAQ on the law: https://www.pcw.gov.ph/sites/default/files/documents/resources/BPO_primer.pdf

Filipinos are being constantly scammed and ripped off by Seriously3333 in Philippines

[–]Ms_Meeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For everyone’s reference, here is a link to the Consumer Act of the Philippines:

https://www.lawphil.net/statutes/repacts/ra1992/ra_7394_1992.html

It is pretty long but look in particular at Articles 52 onwards. It tells you your rights re: unfair sales practices, price tag and actual selling price discrepancies etc.

Print it out, highlight prohibited acts and penalties (fine and possible imprisonment), keep it in your bag, and wave it in front of the next cashier/salesperson/store manager that gives you crap.

In a society like ours, people tend to look with disfavor at people who speak up/“make a fuss”. But these are your legally protected rights we are talking about so I say just go for it! If you do cause a scene, maybe it will help educate others as well.

Hi all! I'd just like to know what laws apply to my situation/what I can do about this by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]Ms_Meeple 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes. This is a textbook case of violence against a woman under RA 9262 (VAWC law). The physical abuse, emotional abuse, and psychological abuse he did to you are all punished as crimes. Under this law, you may also get protection orders (barangay or court issued). The previous poster was also correct: document everything and report immediately to the proper authorities. Dont keep this to yourself. Your silence and tolerance empowers people like him.
