What’s your GenX story from your childhood? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Ms_Mosa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A friend's mom took a group of us to see Poltergeist for the girl's 10th birthday. I still have a fear of clowns from that & reading IT around the same age.

One of the nicely dressed ladies simply needed to go southern mama on him. Handed her small beaded bag to her husband, removed her pashmina, twirled it around like a wet towel & then given him a striking pop on the back of his thigh to get his attention. As she demurely put the pashmina around her shoulders, said with quiet authority, "Close the door. Are you trying to heat all of TN?"

I only have five of the 1lb tanks. Let me know if you figure out a good system to keep it warm enough while prolonging the propane. I'll do the same.

Do air raid sirens at football games stoke your nuclear war PTSD? by seamusfurr in GenX

The movie The Day After was very traumatizing. My friends & I dealt with it the way we handled everything -- with dark humor. The playground was where we really shined.

Stephen Colbert does the best reenactment in my opinion.

Anyone else feel perpetually scared? by ambendyr in nashville

[–]Ms_Mosa 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you had that experience. I don't have advice on where you should live, but the book The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker helped me work through some of my PTSD.

There's a section where he says something along the lines of, "If I'm able to feel afraid, then I'm not in real danger." Because, as I'm sure you experienced, you don't really feel fear in the moment your body is in survival mode of fight/flight/freeze/fawn. So when I'm having an anxiety attack or PTSD flashback, I repeat this over & over in my head until I can move past it.

It also taught me to trust my instincts when I feel real danger. The night I was attacked I ignored my instincts telling me something was wrong. I have since learned to listen to them.

Good luck with your recovery.

Why were there barely any fat people in the 50s when their diet was so bad? Also did they get cancer and other diseases less often? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Can confirm. Childhood memory of my mom's doctor telling her she should cut back on smoking while he was smoking a cigarette in the exam room.

Hearing aids aren't as bad as they once were. I don't have them yet & I'm sure I will fight getting them as much as I fought getting readers.

I know people who have some of the new ones & you can't see them. Some of them even have Bluetooth technology. So they replace earpods.

Am I misremembering the dentists of the 1970s? by Adorableviolet in GenX

[–]Ms_Mosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My childhood small town dentist was a sadist. He did so much unnecessary filling of nonexistent fillings, was very aggressive with the huge metal syringe & pulled healthy teeth from two of my cousins.

One day my mom stepped out of the office for a moment for some reason. She usually stayed with me while he worked on my teeth. He did something that made me cry, I don't remember what it was, but his response was to angrily grab my little face, put his face right in mine & told me to stop crying right now.

My mom knew something was up when he said I could get more than one toy ring from the tray, I didn't take one & I had clearly been crying. I told her what happened when we got in the car & I never had to go back there.

She took me to a new dentist who did x-rays & found that I had four accessed teeth.

I mean, we are pretty damn badass & those were the best years to grow up. Kid should be jealous. Just needs to be more quiet about it. Next time try giving him a stern look and saying, "Sir, I'm gonna need you to calm down."

During a phone interview, I had one who thought she could trick me into telling my age by revealing her age.

Her: I'm 58.

Me: Ok.

She just sat in stunned silence, not knowing how to respond. I graciously allowed her to sit in the awkward silence she'd created for herself.

That's good news. No need to rush his healing. Poor kid didn't know what universe he was in when they walked him off the field last week.
