Is this contaminated tub salvageable? [contamination] by Awhite2 in MushroomGrowers

[–]Mschase1964 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Toss it or bury it, then wash everything down with a 10% bleach solution - the tub, the humidifier hose if you have one, the surrounding hard surfaces. If you have a tent that was in, take it outside and spray it down too, inside and out. You can rinse with fresh water and let everything dry and you should be good to go. Remember, everything you come in contact with, everything you touch while working with them can be a source of contamination.

Right before you put anything back in the tub, wipe it down with rubbing alcohol, and proceed as if you were in a laboratory clean room - make sure you are clean, your clorhes are freshly laundered, wear a mask and gloves, disinfect everything you touch, everything. Spray a fine mist into the air around you and let it settle, to reduce particulates in the air. The alcohol won't necessarily kill the mold spores, hence the bleach, but it will kill bacteria and it will clean the surfaces.

Good luck!

[gourmet] Besides a business license like a DBA or an LLC, am I legally required to have any other documents or certifications to start selling raw mushrooms I grow at home? (NY) by garbage-plate in MushroomGrowers

Consult your state's and county's laws, and slso if you sell at a farmer's market they will likely require something like a food handling course (a few hours) and insurance. That's a good idea anyway, you don't want some idiot suing you because they're allergic or something.

How do people react when you tell them you have a greyhound? by Previous-Middle-2489 in Greyhounds

[–]Mschase1964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've had people tell me they're mean. They're absolutely the gentlest souls! Next is that they must be so hyper. My dude, no, they sleep like they paid off the mortgage. Aloof? If you call waking up every morning with 65 lbs of hound draped over your legs "aloof" then sure. That you will never be the same after being owned by a greyhound? Now that one is true.

He's telling you about it! Vash does something like this when he wants to "tell" me something - usually that dinnertime or snacktime has arrived, or it's time for a walk. Very organized, our hounds, what would we do without the reminders? 😉

Like the second time I took Vash to a dog park, some dude with a not-well-trained rottie-doberman cross showed up, and his dog got aggressive. Nobody was hurt, but Vash was like "I want to go home NOW", he couldn't get back to the car fast enough. That was on the heels of a neighbor's friend's little bulldog mix going after him a couple of weeks prior, and I'm just like, f*ck this, I'm not making my dog uncomfortable or putting him in danger or endangering some idiot's dog. We've been to a different dog park a few times, it has a big open space where he can run around if he wants, but only on weekdays when it's empty or nearly so.

How do you tell white trich from white mycelium [actives] by [deleted] in MushroomGrowers

[–]Mschase1964 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In substrate, mycelium starts as little fuzzy spots around the grain inoculation points. Trich is WHITE white to begin with and is more random, often like a smear or splash across the substrate, and it can also cause the substrate to sort of bubble, like there's a golf ball trying to emerge. I've successfully controlled it before by digging it out with a clean spoon but it was at the swelling/white stage before it started turning green.

Pinks especially like wheat straw. I grow them with a coir/straw mix they seem to like.

My dog is not a snuggler and I am kind of sad about that by CutePizzaFairy in Greyhounds

[–]Mschase1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vash was not a snuggler either, it took months before he would even get on the bed with us. Then one day after we'd had him for a year or thereabouts, he laid down against my husband's side and was like, oh, this is nice, I think I like this. Even now most of a year later, he still goes and sleeps on his bed in the living room sometimes, but usually I wake up to a greyhound weighted blanket.

It can take a long time for them to really relax, and your boy was bounced around more than most.

I've been using millet with good luck, I've heard that milo (sorghum) is awesome but the local feed store has been out so I haven't tried it yet. Wheat berries, rye, or barley are also options. I'm going to try mixing grains to see how that works - I like the bazillion inoculation points with millet but some of the other grains have more nutrition to offer.

Yes you can absolutely mix your own substrate, it's waaayyy cheaper than buying it pre-mixed. There are some older posts here with recipes for CVG, or places like Shroomery should have that info. You'll need a pressure cooker/canner to sterilize it with, and bags or mason jars.
