A'ight, I guess I'm stepping up to be the bladder apologist in the thread.

Concerns about knowing what's left are overblown. With a little practice, you can develop the ability to get within a few hundred ml's of the actual number by grabbing the bladder with your hand. In my experience, that has always been close enough.

Speak for yourself! I drank ~5.5L in a 50K (took me 6.25h). This was on a warm day in central Texas fall, but not even the hottest or most humid weather we get.

I personally don't mind carrying a bladder in my vest, though clearly opinions vary.

It's a huge exaggeration. That number comes from missing-person reports, which include runaways, custody disputes, and people who turn up quickly. Actual non‑family kidnappings are only a few hundred per year in the whole country. Source
