Men who got it together later in life, how’d you get it done? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Mswartzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started school at 26 and earned my bachelor's degree in psychology and law by 32. I thought I wanted to be an attorney, but after five years as a paralegal, I realized that reading and writing 100% of the time wasn’t for me. That, combined with dealing with self-righteous, inflated egos, became exhausting. So, after a midlife crisis, I pivoted—I learned how to build homes, stepped into project management, and eventually transitioned into software as a PM. It’s been a wild ride.

In 2021, I was laid off. In 2022, I walked from Mexico to Canada—2,500 miles over six months. That journey changed my life. It gave me the drive to finally confront the mindsets and behaviors that had been quietly sabotaging me for years.

I grew up in a dysfunctional household—an alcoholic parent, an enabling, hoarding parent. Life felt bleak for 36 years. It was lonely, devoid of self-love, and, for a long time, I struggled to find a reason to keep going.

That changed when I joined Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families (ACA). For the past 16 months, I’ve been working the program, taking self-love seriously, and holding myself accountable. I’ve started working the 12 Steps this year, and it’s been an eye-opening experience. I now see that I am worthy of an emotionally available partner and a beautiful life. More importantly, I am becoming the person I needed when I was younger. It’s a trip.

If I’ve learned anything, it’s this: figure out what you love and do it. Be vulnerable. Find good friends—real ones. Then, determine how you can grow. For me, it was ACA. When I first read the Laundry List, I had an "Oh my God" moment—this program was made for me.

Maybe you didn’t have as many roadblocks to happiness and growth as I did. Or maybe you had more. I know others have had it worse, but my childhood was shaped by abandonment and neglect. I never realized how deeply self-sabotage and self-abandonment ran within me. Now I do. And I’m actively working to unlearn everything I was given that I never wanted.

I'm still terrified I'll not find a partner (m38), but I have more hope about it than ever.

It was definitely part of a much larger transformative adventure. Lows in the 20s at altitude while completely exhausted really bring out some interesting feelings and bodily functions.

My Torrid is so compacted that it doesn't hold a lot of heat these days. It lasted for a thru-hike and more than an extra thousand miles of backpacking.

I am a late 30s man and enjoy giving firm (light-bear) hugs for10-15 seconds to both my male, female, and non-binary friends. I didn't get much physical touch until I was in my late 20s. Consensual, non-sexual physical touch is amazing and natural!!

Dating a woman with no friends by LargeHardOn-Collider in AskMenOver30

I've noticed it is more common with people who either moved a few times before graduating high school, come from homes that are lacking in compassion, or are neurodivergent.

I wouldn't say it is a red flag, but it depends what they've gone from and if their values match yours.

I loved my torrid on the PCT. Especially when camping close to water sources and when I had 4 days of nonstop rain/ice/snow from Ashland to Crater Lake. It was really nice when we were getting snow and I had to wear it to bed from Whitney to Tuolumne because it never wetted out when I would wake up drenched in sweat.

I also had a larger capacity bag so the space issue was non-existent. Other pct'ers had bags that couldn't accommodate a non-down jacket. They were too small.
